EXCLUSIVE: Mark Wahlberg Is Still The Frontrunner To Play 'Nathan Drake' In UNCHARTED

Mark Wahlberg was attached to star in the big screen adaptation of Uncharted back when David O. Russell was directing, but we've now learned that he's still very much the frontrunner to play Nathan Drake!

Uncharted has been in development for a number of years now, and the fact that the critically acclaimed video game series still hasn't received the big screen treatment is baffling to say the least. Sony have certainly tried, and a number of writers and directors have been attached at one point or another. The latest is Horrible Bosses helmer Seth Gordon, while franchise fan and Zero Dark Thirty scribe Mark Boal is writing the latest draft of the script. Who will star in the movie?

We've seen an email between Sony execs including Amy Pascal and Jonathin Kadin which reveal that back in June a meeting took place between Gordon and Mark Wahlberg (who was attached to the project a number of years ago) which apparently went very well. They talked in great detail about the version of the script which existed at that time, and the actor was agreeable to shooting Uncharted in early 2015. It's then mentioned that they need a commitment from Mark "soon", and while we can't confirm he's signed on - Chris Pratt was recently mentioned as being approached but declining - the studio are clearly high on the actor and it appears as if Wahlberg was keen to sign on. We're assuming he's playing the lead, but that's not mentioned.

The Pain & Gain star was even shown a "mock trailer" which is said to have blown him away. Again, a lot might have changed in the past six months, but Wahlberg was extremely close to joining the cast at one point and Pratt could have been approached before these talks took place (remember, his possible involvement was only mentioned casually in a report from one of the trades). We also have a couple of very minor details about the production, including the fact that both Australia and Mexico have been looked at for shooting locations. Gordon meanwhile is said to be keen to cut back on green screen, something which should make fans of the action franchise happy.

as one of my favorite gaming franchises i really hope it does well. i still would prefer a god of war movie but i dont think thats ever happening. just need to get drakes charm and charisma, dont make him a douche. and get sully and elena in the
movie. and just build around them.

sony could have a potential massive movie franchise if they get the movie right because uncharted is really like indiana jones the game. sony knows that so its probably why they are taking their time. no point in rushing it.

all sony has is spiderman and they are potentially going with marvel. they need to get a couple movie franchises going. and the games are a good way to go imo. if they get them right.

Never got into the games. Because I dont play playstation. BUT I would watch a movie with walberg in it. But I would just be seeing marky mark and not the character. Kinda not a good thing dont you think?

I'm always baffled by the comments. How on earth anyone could think he's perfect for Drake is beyond me.

Whalberg would just be playing mark marky like he does in every film. "I'm the treasure hunter. Not you, not you, and not you!" Lol. "Say hello to ya mother for me"

@ComicsBornAndBred I could totally get behind Jensen Ackles as Drake! Dude deserves a blockbuster role already after showing how talented he is on Supernatural for years. Was my go to choice for Batman but oh well... Ben Affleck is good too I guess?

Dear god no to Mark. I like the guy but I ain't interested in watching him pretend to be a history buff with that accent of his, and this is coming from a new englander. Brad Cooper or even Agent Ward from AOS would be my recommends

Bob De Niro as Sully is great but I'd also like Bruce Cambel

CherryBomb

I honestly don't see the appeal of him.
He's a likeable guy but in every role he seems to act it as though he's playing a parody of that character.

CherryBomb
CherryBomb - 12/20/2014, 5:22 AM
I've never seen him act and thought "wow this is an intelligent character"
GrilledPopcorn

@CherryBomb - I thought the same, 'til I saw him in The Departed. He deserved his Oscar nom there
giannis
giannis - 12/20/2014, 5:39 AM
I don't want him to get the role if the movie eventually happens. They should go with an unknown actor in my opinion.

Frank Grillo would be my choice, but I can see Mark in the role.

No thanks I hate Walhberg like @ComicsBornAndBred said Jensen Ackles desrves this to be his mainstream breakout role from proving himself on Supernatural for 10 years.

Yeah, Mark is wrong dude for the role.

He has a charisma of his own but it doesn't fit Drake. And his baby voice is laughable for 40 years old dude.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 12/20/2014, 6:27 AM
@Ruhail PREACH!!! Ackles deserves to become big time. He been puttin that work in on supernatural for a decade and deserves to hit the big screen

@TimL preach brother. Ackles deserve that big screen stardom

Mark Wahlberg is usually a pretty bad actor. He was great in The Departed though.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 12/20/2014, 6:34 AM
Blah. Mark Wahlberg = Will Not Watch

Ackles is a charismatic guy and a decent actor. He's been wasted on low-rent TV for way way too long.
