VIDEO GAMES: GRAND THEFT AUTO V - What Are The Critics Saying?

Arguably the most anticipated video game of 2013 goes on sale tomorrow, but what have the critics been saying about Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto V in the first wave of online reviews? Well, it should come as no surprise to learn that the word "masterpiece" is being used...a lot!

We've said enough. Part of Grand Theft Auto V's magic is discovery, and enjoying the thrilling, unpredictable ride the story takes you on. Whether you're in the thick of a bank heist or exploring the wilderness listening to Johnny Cash on the country station, it always feels tight, refined, and polished. The world is breathtaking, the script is funny, the music is superb (both the licensed tracks and the atmospheric original score), and, most of all, it's really, really fun. [10/10]

Only time will tell whether it's enough to win over the GTA naysayers, but Rockstar North has clearly listened to criticisms of past games and delivered what's as close to the perfect sandbox as technologically possible. The hallmarks of the GTA series are all present, from the way the story is structured, to the explosive set pieces, use of stereotypes and humorous observations. And while we would be hesitant to say that this is a more mature Grand Theft Auto, it's certainly a new high for a series that has grown in confidence with each new instalment. With a great cast, a huge list of missions and activities, some novel new gameplay additions and one of the most stunning environments we've ever explored, Grand Theft Auto 5 is a masterpiece and a hugely impressive technological achievement. Yes, some people will hate GTA V. Some, like me, will thoroughly enjoy it while acknowledging its complications, its shortcomings as a narrative adventure. Last of Us says more about humanity in five minutes than GTA V does in its 70-plus missions. Five stars for such a troubled proposition? That'll confuse and anger a few people, I know it. But no one constructs worlds like Rockstar and this one is worth many, many hours of exploration. It is fun, so much guilty, ridiculous fun. It is beautiful to look at, it is jammed with ideas, and when the free add-on, Grand Theft Auto Online, comes out in October, it will offer a compelling multiplayer experience, where participants combine and face off in gigantic turf wars. Grand Theft Auto V is not only a preposterously enjoyable video game, but also an intelligent and sharp-tongued satire of contemporary America. It represents a refinement of everything that GTA IV brought to the table five years ago. It’s technically more accomplished in every conceivable way, but it’s also tremendously ambitious in its own right. No other world in video games comes close to this in size or scope, and there is sharp intelligence behind its sense of humour and gift for mayhem. It tells a compelling, unpredictable, and provocative story without ever letting it get in the way of your own self-directed adventures through San Andreas. It is one of the very best video games ever made. [10/10]

Grand Theft Auto V is still an extraordinary technical achievement and a fabulous piece of entertainment. I’m not sure every aspect is an unqualified success, and its violent bitterness can be a little wearying, but this is a bold and scintillating full-stop to an explosive generation of video games. It dares the rest of the blockbuster industry to try and match its scope and, even with new consoles on the horizon, it may be some time before anything steps up. [*****]

Come to Los Santos expecting to be surprised, then, but above all expect to lose yourself in the world. Even at this point I've not covered the full range of things you can do - how you can buy stocks ahead of assassination missions, knowing how the hit will affect the share price; the full-service car customisation options, Michael's hugely expensive therapy sessions - and after hours of play, it still throws surprises at you. Paired with storyline missions you actually want to replay - not something that could be said of many of GTA IV's - and you're looking at something that could hold up the next console generation all by itself, even without the considerable potential of GTA Online, arriving as the fourth option on the character-select wheel in two weeks' time. Rockstar's Xbox 360 swansong is probably the console's greatest technical achievement, and as such it's unmissable. [10/10]

No sense in buying new Grand Theft Auto titles. They have barely changed since the third entry and Vice City, and both of which remain excellent plays.

Yea I blame GTA for the state of our youth.

It's those 9-14 year olds fault their mothers buy them such a violent game.

Wait a second....

I'm really excited about this. I hate that the PS4 is about to drop. Wish they'd have made this a launch title for it.

They did the same thing with GTA 4, releasing it at the launch of next gen. Dumb, I don't think it will ever hit next gen systems but GTA 6 will come out at the tail of the the generation too.

Ugh people talking crap here, GTA 4 was not released with the launch of the 360 or the PS3, it came out 3 years after the 360 was released and 2 years after the PS3 was released. Furthermore Rockstar rarely make duds and most of their releases are top games.

"barely changed since the third entry and Vice City"

LMFAO.

Everyone needs a scapegoat.

20 years ago it was music and movies made kids bad.

Now it's video games.

Parents also wanna pass the buck of responsibly for what they created.

Monsters.

@ CubanRaft

As an adult I make decisions on what I want to watch and play. I do not allow mature video games into the house nor do I let my children watch a show like Breaking Bad. Sorry that I am responsible adult and I do control what they see on t.v., video games, and music. I even monitor what they view on the internet.

When my children turn 18 they can decide at that point what they want to watch and play because they will be adults and hopefully mature enough to decide what is right for them.

@ Ineedrev

I agree parents are the ones to blame, they are lazy and let their children do anything they want or give them anything want to shut them up. That is the problem with the society we live in now days.

The funny thing is the notion was thrown at us with a little book called Charlie and Chocolate Factory. Even thought he children were naughty it pointed out the parents were the ones to blame.

That is so true as well, people wonder hmmmm when I was kid I drank sodas my parents cooked with lard and butter but I did not have a weight problem.......Well the reason is there was a lot of physical activity. Thank god my kids who love video games are also active so they do not have a weight problem like some of their friends do.

Not all of it, it is a contributing factor. Tell me if a 5, 6, 7, 8 year old kids is fine playing these games? And it would have not effect on them as they get older?

That is like saying a child who is exposed to porn at a very young is going to fine as well.

Young minds are like sponges and are easily manipulated, hence if you are racists more than likely your children will have views and opinions that are line with racists thoughts.

My family is Hispanic and we live in a very diverse area, but my uncle is a racists A Hole and all half of his children are racists A Holes now.

TheWolverine08 - 9/16/2013, 9:37 AM
@JoeMomma29 I've seen people who let they're children and teens play violent video games, and they turned out fine. The key is talking to your children, and letting them know right and wrong. I frankly find blaming video to be a lazy excuse people who don't raise their kids well use.

I agree that is why I used my Uncle as an example even though he is a racist not all of kids are one.

Some kids will be fine but some just cannot handle it or their minds are like clay that can be molded etc...

Did I say all kids will be effected? Trust me I agree with what everyone is saying you cannot blame video games or movies for everything and ultimately it is the parents duty to monitor all this with their kids.

@ JoeMomma

it annoys me a little when people saying people are made more violent and all the stuff that goes with it, but the human race is less violent than we have ever been there used to be public hangings people were burned alive, and that wasnt really that long ago....go a lttle further you have the crusades and then even further back the bible (which is nothing more than a book of stories) is quiet possibly the most violent book ever.

its not the games and movies or even parents effecting the youth of today its the wars are countries keep forcing on everyone...thats the real problem thats real and effects people.

rant over and i honestly cant wait for GTA V, its coming tomy door tomorrow, happy days
