TV Guide Online says "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator Joss Whedon is being wooed by Warner Bros. to write and direct a "Wonder Woman" film. The site says a deal (and, presumably, an announcement) will be forthcoming.

Additional information about the project hasn’t been released, but TV Guide is kick-starting the casting rumors by throwing Sarah Michelle Gellar’s name into the mix. There’s absolutely no proof that Gellar will someday pilot the Invisible Jet, but her "Buffy" past certainly couldn’t hurt. For that matter, it wouldn’t hurt Alyson Hannigan, Charisma Carpenter, Eliza Dushku, Amber Benson, Michelle Trachtenberg, Emma Caulfield or any other female "Buffy," "Angel" or "Firefly" vets, either.

The Whedon "Wonder Woman" rumors first emerged last week in a report from Ain’t it Cool News. Ain’t it Cool News’ source also claims that Fox is pursuing Whedon to direct "X-Men 3," which, incidentally, was rumored a few months ago.

It’s only fitting that full-throttle rumor mongering be attached to the "Wonder Woman" movie. This film is one of those projects that flares up like a bad virus. For years, the likes of Sandra Bullock, Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey (yes, Mariah Carey) have expressed varying levels of interest in the role, but nothing has ever developed. Whedon’s involvement could be the catalyst the project needs to transcend the years of rumors. Let’s just hope he doesn’t reignite those unfortunate Mariah Carey rumblings.

In the event this film actually goes into production, we’ll be keeping tabs on additional developments on our "Wonder Woman" spotlight page.
