Bryan Singer Teases Return Of Scott And Jean In X-MEN: DOFP; Hints At Shared Fox Universe

X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer hints at the return of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Jean Grey (Phoenix) in the sequel and also shares his thoughts on the concept of creating a shared universe for 20th Century Fox's Marvel characters.

In an interview with IGN Movies, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer has talked more about his plans for the highly anticipated sequel to Matthew Vaughn's critically acclaimed X-Men: First Class. When the site put it to him that a lot of fans would like to see Scott and Jean return, he teased: "Who wouldn’t? Who wouldn’t? [Laughing] That’s all I can say. The good news is that we’re all on the same page!" Earlier in the interview, Singer once again emphasised his plans to fix a few of the less than popular decisions made in X-Men: The Last Stand, so it certainly sounds as if the door is wide open for the return of the two beloved characters.

"I think that if you really examine the X-Men universe it’s every bit as big as the Marvel universe," he said when talk turned to the concept of some sort of shared universe for 20th Century Fox's stable of Marvel superheroes. "There are lesser characters, but if you take certain characters there are a myriad of films you could make, and stories you could tell, with these characters as individuals." As for whether there has been any concrete talk of making this a reality, Singer added: "It’s just something we’re thinking about. Really my big focus was this movie. But we’re talking, [producer] Lauren Shuler Donner and I, and we’ll see."

I think this time around we are going to get the X-men film we have always wanted.

I'm begining to doubt we'll ever get to see the X-men on screen. We'll probably only see Fox-men. It actaully sad.

Did Singer ever explain why he shortchanged Scott Summers so much when he's quintessentially Mr. X-men?

I still say if not Marsden, Jensen Ackles would be an awesome replacement for Cyclops :]

I better get to see Storm because she is just as important as any of the X-men.

@JatevinM I've heard that before...

@superotherside I agree, Fox will probably own X-men for a good few years to come. However after the success of 'The Avengers' and it's solo spin offs by Marvel...it only takes someone in Fox to agree to share their 'comic movie universe' on screen. Then maybe we'll get a true adaption of The X-men.....even the tit of a producer, Lauren Shuler Donner, has shared her enthusiasm for it.

Sell the rights back to Marvel and reboot this franchise.

I don't need whiney Scott, Old Jean or A "Wolverine and friends" movie.

Them in the movie makes it watchable. It being the movie we deserve?

Doubtful

As I said before this should be a time travel movie where we discover the events of the HORRIFIC X through X3 are a result of Apocalypse changing the time stream to ensure his victory in the future and Cable or Bishop are sent back in time to "right the wrongs" of the previous films to the xmen universe we all know and love.

Marsden was very good he just didn't have the right script to portray the character. but that aside, this is excellent news. i honestly think Singer has seen the error of his ways and is working to correct them.

Man people are so harsh.

The original x men and x2 are like the avengers without build up films.

It's a freaking miracle Singer even managed to do half he did. Yeah cyclops was underrepresented at times, no team up film ever gets everyone right. Not even Avengers

Fox men? How about RDJ and his bitches, Hemswhor, captain Evans, the incredible changing actor hulk.

I'm looking forward to this and people slamming Singer for decisions made in 2000 and 2003 are being really harsh imo

Also, I'm getting a strong feeling that DOTFP is by name only and will have nothing to do with that amazing comic.

Sorry so negative this morning. I hate people (frick)ing with my xmen and I've only had one cup of coffee.

There is a possiblity that Fox saw if they treat these characters right, the money is huge. So if Fox is smart, they make the X-verse and every Marvel property tie together. Now, whether or not we get another Wolverine orgins type Deadpool interpertation is the question. But to do this, it is obvious you can't hire multiple directors with their own vision. You do that, you get closer to trainwreck than universe.

@the wonderer, i agree completely. X-men 2 and XMFC are both 2 of the best CBMs. those 2 films definitely changed shit but so did Nolans movies, Raimis movies, and Marvel Studio's movies.

Jared Padalecki would make a FAR better Scott Summers then Jensen Ackles... can't believe some one went there.

All 3 xmen movies were terribly missed cast commercial whores. Fan bias aside... the only thing xmen about those movies were the name.

They should scrap anyone envolved with the first 3 movies. the latest one had the right vibe and was closer, but still could have been closer to being "the x-men"

Honestly I felt like Chronicle was closer to what an xmen movie should be then foxes crapp!

FOX really just needs to let Marvel take over these movies.

We the fans can get the rights back to Marvel if we care at all.

Just wait 3 or 4 weeks till this movie goes into the discount theaters at $2-3 a ticket. This will Ruin Fox's profit margin and they will lose $$ and you will still get to see the movie in theaters.

Tell your friends and Family

@mutantequality, but how many CBM's have ever been an entirely accurate depiction of what happend in the comics its based on?

imo, all that mattersis keeping the essence of the characters the same. which is something the X-men movies have failed to do with some of their characters: Iceman, Cyclops, Kitty and Rogue were the biggest failures in my eyes.

By the same token could be a complete disaster.

Scott and Jean have to come back!!!!!!

With all personal opinions aside (Fox's involvement etc)......after the success of 'The Avengers'....i hope that the director, actors, writers etc involved in 'X-men DOFP', raise their game for this one!!!

Wasn't Chronicle another Fox crap movie? A movie directed by a guy Fox has hired to direct the Fox Fantastic Four reboot?

The idea that some kind of nerd boycott forcing Fox to give the X-Men back to Marvel is not going to happen so just stop.

It's not the CBM fans who make or break these films, its the general public who want some good entertainment for their money. Most of them will not have read DOFP when they see the movie and that will be in spite of Marvel flooding every Barnes and Noble with trade paperbacks leading up to the films release date.

DOFP could end up almost as big of an event as The Avengers was, except it will be because two different versions of the same franchise (played by different actors) will be interacting vs several different ones coming together in the case of The Avengers.

He hints at bringing them back, but not necessarily in this film. Not sure how they'd fit as I'd think they'd need to use the time travel to "reset" things and alter the timeline in order to bring them back, so most likely they'll show up in the next one.

Personally I'd love to see them have three movies spinning out of this:

1) Another First Class sequel set in the 80s which introduces young Cyclops, Storm and Jean Grey;
2) A spin-off movie featuring Cable and the New Mutants / X-Force which is set up by a clever after-the-credits scene at the end of DoFP which sees Cable landing in the new present day / alternate timeline created where Scott and Jean are still alive as adults; and
3) A big-budget, tentpole X-men film set firmly in the new present day timeline which has Wolverine, Storm, Cyclops, Jean, Beast, Rogue, Cable, etc., with all of them recast (except for Cable who is from the alternate future in DoFP).

That's my wish list.
