BOX OFFICE: THE WOLVERINE Opens With $55 Million For A Worldwide Cume Of $141 Million

The Wolverine grossed roughly $30 million less than X-Men Origins: Wolverine in its first weekend; not the best of results, but a good one all the same. It has however already earned its budget back thanks to its performance overseas. We also have updates for you on Pacific Rim and R.I.P.D..

The Wolverine has met the expectations of rival studio estimates by grossing an estimated $55 million at the North American box office this weekend. However, while this may be considerably beneath his last solo outing, these numbers are about the same as X-Men: First Class back in 2011 (and that will be getting a follow-up with next year's X-Men: Days of Future Past). Also below are updates for the other major releases currently battling it out at the crowded summer box office, but unlike the modestly budgeted The Wolverine, most of these are in fact financial flops.

Internationally, The Wolverine earned roughly $86.1 million for a worldwide total of $141.1 million. That easily covers the film's $120 million production budget. It may have come in slightly below expected domestically, but this was actually the strongest opening of all-time for an X-Men movie. This puts the movie on track for a sequel, so stay tuned to CBM for further updates!

Josh Wilding Reviews: THE WOLVERINE; "An Edge Of Your Seat Adrenaline Ride"

Based on the celebrated comic book arc, this epic action-adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic character of the X-Men universe, to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world he faces his ultimate nemesis in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his physical and emotional limits, he confronts not only lethal samurai steel but also his inner struggle against his own immortality, emerging more powerful than we have ever seen him before.

Damn. That's low for The Wolverine. And Pacific Rim is well and truly busted. Only Asia can get us a sequel to that.

so much for these franchises I guess fox will continue with young Magneto and company after this reboot coming from Days of Futures past. Then they will also have X force, New Fantastic Four, Apocalypse used in a thanos like way same way with Mr. Sinister, and maybe more wolverine films although they should go magneto and cable way with movies from hear on out. Take it a new direction the villain should be their guy from here on out.

Can't blame people being put off because of how much Origins sucked. This film will still do good enough.

I love waking up to the smell of under performing X films. Blame Fox for completely mismanaging the X-Men franchise as a whole.

Im glad the movie is getting great critics, from fans and sites alike.

But this just proves that the world is starting to loose interest in Wolverine.

So its time to explore all options and characters, imo. Bring on X-Force, X4, Deadpool and more!

X-Men 2 and X-Men: First Class are still two of the best comic book films. Quit crying about Fox. Some changes are needed to make a film work. A comic is a comic. A film is a film. They're different and some changes are necessary.

Wolverine was not a good film IMO felt like just another Fox movie from 2001, it had potential but overall kinda boring movie with cheesy lines/moments, dodgy cgi, pointless characters, badly filmed fight scenes, and terrible climax. I had hope after the first 20mins then it just went downhill from there. We need a full on Sci-Fi reboot of the Xmen franchise.

I enjoyed the movie, but unfortunately it didn't blow me away and I just don't think there was enough there to get audiences really excited about it. We've seen Hugh Jackman running around in his beater or shirtless in four films already. It's gotten stale.

Not sure if a full-on reboot is needed at this stage or not, but it is clear that FOX needs to use DoFP to take the franchise in a different direction. New threats, focus on other characters besides Wolverine (even the general public is burned out on him at this point), more nods to the comics (like costumes, for example), etc.

The easiest thing for them to do is probably to have DoFP establish an alternate timeline (or rather make the X1-3 films and the two Wolverine films an alternate timeline). This allows them to continue making First Class sequels in the past (introducing young versions of Cyclops, Jean, Storm, etc., in the 80s), as well as do a "soft" relauch where they recast everyone and do a big 'Uncanny X-men' film that kind of hits the ground running (i.e, not a retread of the origin story).

They could keep Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, but if they recast everyone else they'd probably go younger so it might be kind of off if he's in his mid to late 40s and the rest of the cast in their 30s. Plus his deal is up after DoFP and they have to renegotiate with him. After The Wolverine posting such lackluster box office results I'm not sure it's in FOX's best interest to shell out the big bucks to lock him in as Wolverine for 3 or 4 more films personally. We'll see I suppose...

It's no surprise. Its like me and my friends are talking about going to see The Wolverine today but no one has the drive to actually get up and go see it. It's like there's nothing about the movie that just out right excites us. It's like ever since X3 I love for X-men movies just went down the toilet. We enjoyed the first class movie but like i said they just don't excite us. It's get to the point to where it just feels like Fox is just Milking the Franchise.
