Bryan Singer Further Explains The Time Travel Elements Of X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

Revealing how much of the movie takes place in the future, X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer explains how exactly having Kitty Pryde send Wolverine's mind back to the 1970s will work in the film. Needless to say, it sounds a little...confusing! We also have new details on the plot.

"The future's about 25, 30 percent of the movie. The past is most of it," X-Men: Days of Future Past director Bryan Singer told Empire Magazine when asked how exactly the past and future scenes are split up in the movie which serves as both a follow-up to X-Men: The Last Stand AND X-Men: First Class. The feature also mentions that the future scenes take place in 2023 and the reason for Wolverine being sent back is to stop the assassination of a "key figure" - at the hands of Mystique - in order to avoid annihilation at the hands of the Sentinels. As for how exactly Wolverine is sent back, Kitty Pryde will use her phasing powers to send his mind back into his 1970s body. "It's about figuring your rules and sticking to them," Singer explains. "The principle I looked at is this theory that until an object is observed, it hasn't really happened yet. The time-traveller whose consciousness travels through time I call The Observer, and until The Observer returns to where he travelled from, the result hasn't occurred yet. So he can muck about in the past and it isn't until he snaps back that the new future is set. As a result, we're able to have parallel action, and there's an underlying tension because there's always that threat Wolverine's conciousness could return and leave the world in an even darker place." It's also revealed that the school - in the past - has been closed for ten years by 1973, perhaps explaining why the team are no longer together. What do you guys think? Sound off below!

I have faith in this film, mainly due to the First Class cast + SDCC trailer/footage.

Sounds like a great concept. I like how Singer first creates his time-traveling rules. Sounds dumb but in IMO, time-travel only works when rules are consistent.

First class was great. Way different feel than the others. I hope they keep a similar tone and not go to comic-book like (like the earlier versions).

It was a pretty big d*ck move to release the teaser for the trailer on the same day as the Cap trailer. Lost some respect for them after that.

Singer said the trailer will be a character piece and will not feature any VFX shots since they're aren't done yet.

I'm looking forward to this movie and I hope it is really good, but in the end I go through this same exact thing whenever a new X-Men movie comes out I always am excited for it and I always think that maybe this will be the time they finally get it right but I always leave the theater disappointed...

FOX has been on a role since first class, hopefully this will open up the door for a whole new x-men timeline ie more films with different characters.

if it's in 2023 then why did they have SPOILER Prof. X and Magneto talking to Wolverine in like 2014 at the end of The Wolverine? And will they be explaining why Xavier is back in the first place? END SPOILER

Very interesting. The rules that they set up make it clear why the future team has to protect Logan's body and make sure he comes back, while allowing the story to be told in both timelines without creating confusion about cause and effect.

I suppose that means that by the end of the film Wolverine will come back to a different future, instead of just creating an alternate timeline and coming back to his own. And I'm hoping in this new future we get the return of Cyclops. Although I'm sure that he'll appear as a young student of Xavier's in the next sequel with the First Class cast, I'd really like to see Marsden come back as an older version of him.

good concept ... easy to follow for sure.

The Wolverine won't probably [frick] up his task.
But that doesn't mean that at the end of the day future can't be any darker. I'm assuming that the third of final act could give us little "twist" (something older Charles and Eric could never predict - like that they both been manipulated the whole time) and the whole world (both past and the future) could be entirely changed in the way no X-Men could ever imagine. Then we could see Apocalypse or Onslaught taking over the world.

Sounds deep and psychosocial...

Stories are always better when they have rules of the world that they stick to.

Liking it. Can't wait for the trailer tomorrow
