While Disney/Marvel will more than likely eventually envelop the
X-Men property into their universe and film slate (though recent report indicate that
Comcast are seeking to outbid
Disney on that front) whatever the case, that is for a day far down line.
Before that day comes, we still have the upcoming
X-Men: Dark Phoenix on the horizon and while general anticipation has been mixed - with some looking forward to Jessica Chastain's villainous turn and the chance to see the Phoenix saga done right but others less enthused by the choice of Simon Kinberg to direct and certain comments made that indicate it may well repeat the same mistakes that
X-Men: The Last Stand did.
One such person who is on the more positive end of the specturm is comic book legend and co-creator of innumerable X-Men characters: Chris Claremont.
In an interview with
ScreenCrush about an upcoming documentary about his storied and influential time at the comic book publisher conversation turned to film adaptations of his characters and works, it was noted that the upcoming
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the second time that story has been brought to the screen - to that Claremont referenced the multiple instances of Ian Fleming's
Casino Royale being adapted and then had this to say:
The second Dark Phoenix will have as powerful an impact on the comic-book film world as the second Casino Royale had on the James Bond film world. I figure you could do a whole lot worse than that.
He went on having this to say about the first time director Simon Kinberg
Simon Kinberg has his heart in the right place. He’s got the best ensemble cast of young faces I’ve seen in quite a while. My hope is it will give the Avengers a more than decent run for their money.”
That's certainly high praise indeed and levels X-Men: Dark Phoenix with some high expectations. What do you think? Can Dark Phoenix offer some competition for the MCU's "finale"? Is the Kinberg the one to deliver on the potential of the FOX X-Men? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.
