Chris Claremont Thinks X-MEN:DARK PHOENIX Will Give AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR "A Run For Its Money"

With the future of the FOX X-Men uncertain DARK PHOENIX may be the last mainline X-Men film from the studio that we see. Comics legend Chris Claremont seems to think it will be one for the history books.

While Disney/Marvel will more than likely eventually envelop the X-Men property into their universe and film slate (though recent report indicate that Comcast are seeking to outbid Disney on that front) whatever the case, that is for a day far down line.

Before that day comes, we still have the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix on the horizon and while general anticipation has been mixed - with some looking forward to Jessica Chastain's villainous turn and the chance to see the Phoenix saga done right but others less enthused by the choice of Simon Kinberg to direct  and certain comments made that indicate it may well repeat the same mistakes that X-Men: The Last Stand did.

One such person who is on the more positive end of the specturm is comic book legend and co-creator of innumerable X-Men characters: Chris Claremont.

In an interview with ScreenCrush about an upcoming documentary about his storied and influential time at the comic book publisher conversation turned to film adaptations of his characters and works, it was noted that the upcoming X-Men: Dark Phoenix is the second time that story has been brought to the screen - to that Claremont referenced the multiple instances of Ian Fleming's Casino Royale being adapted and then had this to say:

The second Dark Phoenix will have as powerful an impact on the comic-book film world as the second Casino Royale had on the James Bond film world. I figure you could do a whole lot worse than that.

He went on having this to say about the first time director Simon Kinberg

Simon Kinberg has his heart in the right place. He’s got the best ensemble cast of young faces I’ve seen in quite a while. My hope is it will give the Avengers a more than decent run for their money.”

That's certainly high praise indeed and levels X-Men: Dark Phoenix with some high expectations. What do you think? Can Dark Phoenix offer some competition for the MCU's "finale"? Is the Kinberg the one to deliver on the potential of the FOX X-Men? Leave your thoughts in the usual place.

Typo in the title. "A Run For It's Money" should be "A Run For Its Money".

A run for their money doesn’t insinuate quality, which in both cases, I’m betting will fall hilarious short of Avengers.

Nice of you to say Chris, but the evidence of past performance tells a different story. In Kinberg we trust....to frick it up and lie about it after.

To be fair, he just said "Avengers", so he could mean the first one.

That being said, I don't see that happening Claremont. The first Avengers on its own isn't some mindblowingly perfect film, but it was a pop culture phenomenon that issued in and solidified a new era of superhero films. None of the X-Men films, even the best ones, have been able to feel like that. Infinity War on the other hand is just a [frick]ing behemoth of a film that only the DCEU an potentially replicate (if they clean up their act), but Infinity War will be the first of its kind, just like the first Avengers.

Now of course, Dark Phoenix could be a better film than Infinity War, or just be as good of a film as Infinity War, but as an event, Dark Phoenix will mean nothing compared to it.

And really, what is Dark Phoenix apparently going to do that will set it apart from the current landscape? We've seen lots of films about this cast of mutants before. Superheroes in space has been done already (and quite well I think) by Thor and Guardians of the Galaxy. Attempts to ground heroes in philosophy and psychology has been done before with The Dark Knight trilogy and Civil War, and even Man of Steel and Batman v Superman (whether it was done well or not). An attempt at the Phoenix Saga has been done before (and pretty much failed). And so far, every other CBM this year (aside from maybe Ant-Man and the Wasp, but that has it's own unique heist/spy thriller/rom-com angle) looks to be something different and unique. Black Panther as we are hearing tackles themes and issues of race, colonisation and identity, while being inspired by The Godfather/Game of Thrones's drama and the espionage thriller elements of a Bond film. Infinity War is literally 10 years of patience and world-building coming to a head. New Mutants has its horror thing going on. Deadpool 2 will continue its superhero satire. Aquaman might be a little like BP but its underwater world and visual potential will set it aside (if done right), and it apparently tackles issues on the environment, climate change, and sea pollution. What can Dark Phoenix possible do to compete with all of that, not to talk of Infinity War?

Here's the thing, he could be modest or he just doesn't have a good gauge on these comic book films. Walt Simonson, a fantastic writer for Marvel and responsible for some of the best Thor stories came out of Apocalypse and said he enjoyed the movie, completely unprovoked. They're great comic writers, not movie critics. We don't have to take their opinion to hear if we don't want to, or you can if you want. Point is, it's just his opinion, I think he's completely wrong in this instance, but it's just his opinion, and he's obviously entitled to it.
