James Mangold Reveals That He Shot The Costume Scene In THE WOLVERINE For The Fans

While it didn't make the final cut of The Wolverine, director James Mangold has now revealed that the reason for creating a scene featuring the classic yellow and brown costume was due to the demand of fans. Hit the jump to read his comments on that and his plans for the sequel!

While it may only be a deleted scene on the Blu-ray, fans were still overjoyed to see a version of Wolverine's classic costume FINALLY make it into a live-action movie. While it was cut from The Wolverine due to X-Men: Days of Future Past, it still arguably leaves the door open for Logan to don the suit in a future movie, so it's good luck then that director James Mangold will be returning for the sequel! Talking to IGN, this is what he had to say about shooting the scene with the classic costume: "Honestly, first of all, I kept hearing and seeing from fans who were just begging to see this wardrobe, and I kept thinking as we were shooting, "How can I do this? How could I ever service this desire for people to see it?" And there was a point where I just asked the prop department to make me a gift box. So when I did that scene on the plane with Yukio, with RIla [Fukushima] and Hugh [Jackman], I had no costume. The studio hadn’t approved of making one or doing anything, but I thought, "Let’s just shoot a couple takes where he opens the box and reacts to it, and I can figure out what to put inside the box later." There was just a point later in the cutting room where I put it together, and I thought, "It’s kinda sweet."

While Magold doesn't reveal whether or not we'll see the suit in the sequel, he does say that he has some ideas how to make the movie different to what's come before. "I think the thing I’d love to make sure we do is that we find a way to not to turn it into a "Will the world survive?" movie -- I think that that worked for us here -- but also not to make the same picture again. I think the key thing for me, you heard me talking about how I construct scripts, is just figuring out the key relationships and just what it’s about, what theme the whole thing is going to be about. I’ve got a good angle on it, but I’m not ready to talk about it yet!" To hear even more from the director, be sure to click on the link below to read the interview in full.

He sounds like a nice enough guy. This leaves a great possibility to seeing it in a future sequel.

JAMES - You have to have Wolverine in the Suit vs Omega Red in the second film

Costume was there as fan-service; not really a big surprise.
Costume could otherwise work, but I'm still skeptical about the mask, Logan doesn't have a secret identity(at least in the movies) so why would he even wear a mask. He should have that mask as trophy on wall or something like that.

Would be nice to see him in the classic costume one day.

I'm okey if logan just wearing the classic suit without donning the mask, since he didn't have any secret to hide.

Wouldn't X Force be the sequel ... Kinda?

Dat costume is sweet!

Agreed with Odin, It kinda unnecessary for Logan to wear costume in movies, since he doesn't have secret identity.

Never thought the suit would work in live-action, but that does look pretty cool. Still, how would they explain it? Why would Wolverine suddenly start wearing a mask? He has no secret identity to speak of, so the mask makes no sense story-wise. It does look cool though.

Mask could work on screen he wears it to scare the crap out of his enemies lol. Sure maybe at first they would talk shit but after he shreds a few think they would be plenty scared to fight.

Singer would never have done this. I'm glad James did this for the fans of Wolverine and X-men. For that i have my complete trust in James to do a sequel to The Wolverine.

"Mask could work on screen he wears it to scare the crap out of his enemies lol. Sure maybe at first they would talk shit but after he shreds a few think they would be plenty scared to fight."

By that logic, it isn't the mask thats scaring people. Its him shredding them with his claws thats doing the scaring.

You just said they would still talk trash at first. If thats the case, then they clearly aren't afraid of the mask. lol

You think that bright colourful mask will scare his enemies? I'm sorry but....

I didn't say anything about realism in a comic book movie.

I just simply pointed out what you said yourself. Which is the fact that they would see the him and the mask, talk trash, then get scared AFTER he shredded some of them.

If you're talking about reputation, which it sounds like you are now, people are going to recognize him even without the costume once he makes a name for himself as being a brutal killer.

So again, the mask doesn't really serve much purpose.

Not that I wouldn't mind seeing it. Although it would be kind of weird, especially after Logan even made jokes and voiced his opinion about how ridiculous he thinks costumes are.

Yeah Fox raped our beloved characters but to bitch and moan about it after 13 years is the definition of beating a dead horse. Move on.

Meh!

Looks crap anyway, cutting room floor is the place for it. I think Logan looks more bad-arse in Civvy's then he would in spandex.

Don't really care about the suit to be honest. I do think, after all these years, that the costume would look just goofy now because everybody is used to seeing him without it. I'd say...save the costume for a reboot.

Just turned the yellow on the suit into tan and shortened the spiky things on the mask and you're done.

At least we have a director that listens to the fans. Even though the suit wasn't worn it was still a good scene.
