X-MEN: Taron Egerton On Why He Turned Down Cyclops Role And Those Persistent MCU Wolverine Rumors

Kingsman star Taron Egerton has revealed why he decided against playing Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse, while once again addressing the rumours that continue to follow him about playing Wolverine...

Taron Egerton put himself on the map after starring in Kingsman: The Secret Service, meaning no one was surprised when he was mentioned as being in line for the role of Cyclops in X-Men: Apocalypse. The part ultimately went to Tye Sheridan, and while Egerton's name briefly came up in regards to Spider-Man (among fans, at least), he's yet to join the Marvel or DC Universes.

The Welsh actor remains a fan-favourite choice to play Wolverine, of course, but just how close did he come to suiting up as the X-Men's leader, Scott Summers?

"I don't mind saying it: That was a real thing, that was a real conversation," Egerton confirms in the video below. "I've never said this, actually. To be honest, the reason that conversation never went anywhere further is because I didn't want to play a character for a potential series of movies where you don't see my eyes."

"For me, I felt, instinctively, creatively, that - like, the eyes are the windows to the soul. I would find that challenging, and I just didn't find it an intriguing prospect," the actor continued. "It's not that they ever offered it to me, but there was a conversation - a real conversation - that never went any further."

It's a shame we didn't get to see the Rocketman star's take on Cyclops, but his reasoning is understandable. Clearly, it wasn't a challenge Egerton was interested in taking on, and he probably had a lucky escape seeing as X-Men: Apocalypse marked the beginning of the end for that franchise.

As for the chatter that continues to surround him about playing the MCU's Wolverine, Egerton added: "I made the mistake of saying that I had had a general meeting with Marvel around four years ago, which is true. But it got kind of spun and twisted into this thing."

"Look, I've always said...I don't know if I'm the right guy to play that part. I was with Hugh [Jackman] yesterday, briefly, who obviously played the role originally - it was such different vibes. I don't know if I would be the right person to follow him," he continued. "But I've always said I would be open to it, but at the moment, there's no truth, other than the fan-casting thing, which goes kind of crazy every time I mention it. But, you know, who knows."

While Egerton isn't convinced he would be the right choice to pick up the claws from Hugh Jackman, fans believe otherwise, and there has to be a plan for Wolverine in the MCU. As per usual, it appears we'll have to wait and see, but Marvel Studios would be wise to scoop up the talented actor sooner rather than later.

He'd be fine but I can't help but feel like he'd come across more like a younger version of Jackmans Wolverine. I'd prefer them to go in a completely different direction. Let's have someone who's not so conventionally attractive and a bit more dangerous both in terms of casting and on screen presence.

He'd be perfect for Wolverine or Cyclops. Great actor and when he bulked up recently, he'd look great in a costume

For people who says he's too pretty, you can have his ugly elton john look too

@mastakilla39 - Ironically he would have the opposite problem that people had with Jackman: He’s too short to play Cyclops.

@Tasmaniac - He's TOO short to play Cyclops(and not handsome enough imo) and TOO tall to play Wolverine(Too handsome for the character)....

Dye his hair blond and you have HAVOK.

@Tasmaniac - I felt the same way about all 5'2" of Tye Sheridan, but they let him do it and barely anyone batted an eye.

@Blastaar - I dont think cyclops has to be THAT attractive, but tall and charismatic would be a must. Someone like Adam Driver could kill in that role.

@Shivermetimbers - Adam Driver is a GREAT actor, but he has the face only a horse can love.

@Blastaar - All these people on here saying he’s too attractive have no idea what they’re talking about. My ex-sister in law is a hairdresser, and she once told us about a guy who came into her salon with long, scraggly hair and beard and asked for a shave and haircut. They were all a bit wary of him as he looked like a feral. But after about an hour, when he was cut and shaved, they were all completely stunned at what he looked like underneath all the hair as he was breathlessly good looking. Exactly the same applies here. People need to let this shit go.

@Tasmaniac - If you're talking about Wolverine, that's part of his character. He's not supposed to be the traditionally tall, handsome, and charming superhero, and that's a HUGE part of what makes him so unique. I don't know exactly who you are talking about so forgive me if I'm mistaken.

id still take scott eastwood as wolverine, though scott caan would of been a decent pick for height and stature if he was younger .

Do you not read news articles when they come out? Or is this delayed journalism on purpose, with rumors taking priority 🤔

@bobevanz - if the last 20 years have taught me anything, it's that people enjoy the dirt sheets and rumors way more than they do actual news. Got to sell the product that makes the most money.

It won't happen.
You need someone extremely gruff and hideous to play Wolvie properly.

@BritishMonkey - You do realise that Hugh Jackman was voted Sexiest Man Alive?
cyclopsprime
cyclopsprime - 7/27/2022, 9:45 AM
@Tasmaniac - not around the time he was cast as wolverine
BritishMonkey
BritishMonkey - 7/27/2022, 1:57 PM
@Tasmaniac - Yep.
I just don't like most fancasts for Wolvie lately. He's an angry, hairy troll man with a face that looks like it's been smashed in 10,000 times over and everyone seems to think "What about this pretty faced model for Wolverine?" It's silly lol
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 7/27/2022, 5:09 PM
@cyclopsprime - He was at the time he was playing him. And he’d already been the lead in a romantic comedy prior to his casting. So he was always considered attractive.
Tasmaniac
Tasmaniac - 7/27/2022, 5:12 PM
@BritishMonkey - Angry and hairy, yes. Ugly, no. Women in the comics have always found him attractive. Not in the classic sense, but with masculinity, charisma and animal magnetism. But he’s not been ugly.
BritishMonkey
BritishMonkey - 7/27/2022, 9:43 PM
@Tasmaniac - John Byrne didn't exactly draw him handsome lol

I think Wolverine is going to be cast again as a mostly unknown, like Jackman was at the time.

Tom Pelphrey for Wolverine.
Shivermetimbers
Shivermetimbers - 7/27/2022, 1:17 PM
@TheManWithoutFear - I hate this choice, but respect your opinion. He doesn't look the least bit tough or intimidating...and he is too tall. I liked him as Ward in Iron Fist though.

I guess not every actor can show emotion through body and a set of armor that hides their face like Gwendoline Christie and Pedro Pascal.
