Evan Peters Talks Filming His Praised 'Quicksilver' Scene In X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST

When The Hollywood Reporter caught up with Evan Peters last week, they first asked the actor about his breakout role as Peter Maximoff aka Quicksilver in X-Men: Days of Future Past and whether he knew the character would be the highlight of the film for most viewers. "No not at all," he assured. "I knew the character was cool and they had written was great. But I didn't now any of the special effects they had planned. I had never done anything like this before. They were filming it and said it would look really cool. I'm super happy with it and pleasantly surprised and how awesome it turned out." On stealing scenes from the likes of Wolverine and Magneto, Evan Peters says it was "pretty" intimidating. "I had grown up watching all of the X-Men films and then there's Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in front of me," he recalled. "I was really nervous. They were great and really funny and nice guys -- Hugh and James [McAvoy] and Nicholas [Hoult]. They were awesome."

About getting offered the Quicksilver role, and  the key to getting him right, Peters said, "I was trying to find the right attitude for him. You don't want to make him too crazy and too caffeinated. But it was really the mischievous quality that was something that Bryan and I worked on.  He's faster than the law. He sort of has this attitude that he get away with anything." He continued, "Bryan singer called me and said he's a fan of American Horror story and he wanted me for the role. I was blown away because I audition for things all the time and I don't get things – and here I get a role in the new X-Men movie as Quicksilver. I was going 'what the hell is going on? This is awesome!' I think I was actually shooting eight or nine days. It was two different two-week sessions I was up in Montreal."

On what is was like actually shooting the kitchen scene, Peters explained that it was very physical as he got a bruise or two. "It was really cool because in the elevator me and Fassbender got to improvise a lot and just play around, which is so much fun," he said. "He's such a cool guy. Then we get upstairs to the kitchen and it's all very technical. There are a lot of motion capture camera moves and you are shooting with a phantom camera, which shoots in super slow motion – and the room is brighter than any sunny day.  And there are these four guys keeping their eyes open and pretending to be frozen. And I'm just running around pretending to move them." He added, "There's a section of the scene where I'm moving the arms of two cops, so their guns will move. Then I'm supposed to sprint to the other end of the room to prevent the bullets from hitting my friends –- but there's water all over the floor and I slip and fall – I just eat shit. They tried to teach me some parkour. They tried to teach me jumping some jumping over shit and that was funny to."

Though the interview was conducted before X-Men: Days of Future Past writer/producer Simon Kinberg confirmed that Quicksilver would return for X-Men: Apocalypse, Kinberg had said initially that Quicksilver would eventually have an expanded role. When THR asked Evan Peters if he knew anything about that, he replied. "I would love to be back, especially the way Simon is talking." Lastly, the actor was asked what it's like now that X-Men: Days of Future Past has been released. "I'm like a kid in a candy store. I'm just so happy to be a part of this movie. Hugh Jackman says he sneaks into a theater and watches a movie with the crowd. I'm thinking that's a good idea and might do that this weekend," he said. What do you think?

Huh! so you say he got the part without even auditioning, I wonder who..I mean what Bryan Singer saw in him.

He certainly surprised the hell out of me. Wasn't convinced he would be believable as Quicksilver when the photos were released of him in costume. I can admit when I'm wrong :/

Would have loved if he stayed the rest of the film.

Which reminds me... Did Logan ever talk to Mystique? Can't remember.

Stuff like this makes me happy for the guy. He'll go down in the franchises history of having one of the best scenes to date. Very heart warming, cool and funny scene man. lol I don't think he'll be "evil" or anything like that in the next film but he will be with Mags you can best believe that.

I'm sure Joss's Quicksilver will be a highlight of AoU as well. Seeing that he's already filmed a majority of his scenes I think he already knows what he's working with and how it'll differ from what we saw in DoFP but so far I'm very impressed with the visual work Singer and the staff did for the film.

Can't wait for Apocalypse! 2016 is going to be THEE Golden summer for comic book movies.

Funny, frequently on this site, the stuff that gets the most flack, turns out to be the highlight or one of best things about the movie...lesson, let's try not to judge everything before we actually see the movie, k? ;)

@Kurne

I think there's a LOT of scenes that didn't make it into the final cut of the film...

-Pietro/Peter's sister telling Wolverine: I'm a princess. Who are you? (And he replies) I'm Wolverine!

-Logan telling Mystique she's a cold hearted b^tch I'm assuming?

-There was a set pic of Magneto holding a dagger close to Blink

-Rogues rescue scene in the film

-Other scenes involving Trask mentioning his past growing up or something like that.

And a few others I can't recall at the moment but yeah I'm hoping they release a directors cut especially if the scenes have a positive impact on the film.

Couldn't have said it any better myself. This example is why I'm not bashing Tatum for Gambit. He's going to surprise a lot of people. And any one can quote, screen shot or bring up this comment again come 2015/2016 I'm sticking to my opinion like Botox on Sylvester Stallone!

I feel you man, to me I think it just came from how little people have scene of QS's powers featured in CA:TWS and automatically think that it's all they'll get out of the character but when QS in AOU goes against those minion bots of Ultron it's gonna be beast.

@TheBlackNerd

Rogue's rescue scene was obviously the biggest.

I'll agree with Kinberg that it would have been awkwardly placed within the film. I'm assuming it was going to happen where Logan started freaking out and hurt Kitty, Mystique and Erik were fighting, Stryker was paralysed... IMO that scene is one of my only gripes as well. A little crowded/jumbled up.

Best scene in a cbm (top five)
Bring him back for the next film
Huge lesson here: Never judge the book by the cover...cmon EVERYBODY thought those photos of him were putrid.

WB/Snyder: FLASH(in Justice League) BETTER BE MORE SPECTACULAR BECAUSE SINGER JUST SLAPPED DOWN THE BLUEPRINT

Whedon: Your move sir. (but I trust you)

If they can make the Flash look [frick]ing dope on a CW budget, I have a feeling it will be 10 times better in a JL movie.

no audition?!? Of course not there was not time....He was not in movie untill Whedon made his move...

It was by far the best scene in the movie..and a major plot hole to me. As effective as he was, why wouldn't you keep him with you to do other things like, o i dont know grab trask and hide him away...

@TBN I noticed those were missing too...That happen quite a bit. I am hopeful for a directors cut that has the Rogue stuff in it.

Until the photos we didn't see him in action. It was the action that made the difference not the costume.

"
While the QS scenes is the best in the movie it has been pointed out the effect used for his powers was done already in a movie named clockstoppers.
From 2002...."

And the running along the wall reminds me of the scene in 2001:Space Odessey with the austronaught jogging along the walls of the spaceship.

The scene is really great but come on guys. The super slo mo effect is nothing new and has been done plenty of times.

What makes the scene is what he do to people and how Evan Peters plays the part.
Nothing new just made a really effective scene with whats already been done.

He needs to be apart of the X-men team in the next movie. We won't get Angel so they need to make quicksilver a significant team member with Scott, Jean, Storm and Hank.

X-men in Apocalypse

1. Cyclops

2. Jean

3. Hank

4. Storm

5. Quicksilver
