CHARLIE'S ANGELS Suit-Up In First Official Stills From Elizabeth Banks' Upcoming... Sequel?

The first stills from Sony Pictures' upcoming Charlie's Angels movie have been released (via EW), giving us our first official look at the new team members played by Kristen Stewart (Twilight), Naomi Scott (Aladdin), and Ella Balinska (Nyela’s Dream).

In addition, some surprising new details about the reboot sequel have been revealed. According to Banks, this Charlie's Angels will actually serve as a "continuation" that will incorporate the events of the original 1970s TV series and the McG-directed 2000s movies.

You'll find out more below by clicking the "view list" button, where you can also check out 7 images from the film.

Charlie's Angels is set to hit theaters on November 15.

The New Team

Director Elizabeth Banks, pictured here with her new trio of ass-kicking heroines.

“It was important to me to make a movie about women working together and supporting each other, and not make a movie about their romantic entanglements or their mother they don’t call enough,” says the actress-turned filmmaker. “When I’m at work, I don’t talk about those things. I get on with my job. It felt important to do that for the Angels, to treat them with the respect their skill set demands.”

Sabina Undercover

Stewart's character is named Sabina Wilson, and is described as "the hard-partying, highly skilled wild card" of the team.

Here, she goes undercover at a Turkish derby, where the team has been tailing a target until “chaos ensues."

Jane and Langston

Ella Balinska plays Jane Kano, the "ex-MI6 muscle of the group."

She's pictured here with a mysterious character named Langston, who will be played by To All the Boys I've Loved Before actor - and quite possibly our new He-Man - Noah Centineo.

Elena

Aladdin’s Naomi Scott plays Elena Houghlin, an "MIT-trained scientist who serves as the heart of the movie.”

“I wanted somebody who I felt the audience wants to root for,” Banks says of casting her Power Rangers co-star in the pivotal role. “She’s getting to be this Everywoman who’s also very fun and very funny.”

Elizabeth Banks On Set

Though this isn't Elizabeth Banks' first big gig behind the camera (she also helmed Pitch Perfect 2), it is the first Charlie's Angels installment to be directed by a woman.

"It’s a really exciting moment for female-driven films,” she says, citing Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel as recent examples of box-office successes. “Audiences are really looking for those aspirational stories about real and relatable characters, and I think the women in my movie are definitely real and relatable, but most importantly, I think they’re really fun.”

Angels Assemble

Sabina Wilson (Stewart), Jane Kano (Balinska) and Elena Houghlin (Scott) suit-up for action.

Sabina And Bosley

In addition to directing, Banks will also play Bosley... although she won't be the only character with that name.

“‘Bosley’ is now a rank in the organization, like lieutenants,” she says. “All of the Angels have been played by different women and have had different names, but the Bosley character was always named Bosley no matter who played him. We thought, ‘Well, that must mean it’s more than a name.’”

I'm interested to see how it connects to the originals and the 2000s ones.

But that's about it.

@L0RDbuckethead - The recent Dynamite Entertainment comic came up with an interesting idea for that, one that many fans have wanted to see with James Bond. Spoiler alert, the ending shows that the 70’s Angels took over the Townsend Detective Agency and passed the Angels mantle through the years, with the originals assuming the ‘Charlie’ identity. It could very well explain the trios from the 2000’s films and the 2010’s TV show.

I think I'm actually starting to see this trope of putting a small group of women together for a cast in some gender-defying typically male-dominated genre film and the entire premise being based on the people working on it heaping unearned praise on the characters/actresses. It's starting to get tired. It's another shameless reboot/sequel, but we're supposed to buy into the bullshit and deeply care about the characters because it's women in an action film. It's just cheap and disingenuous to me. It doesn't make the film good and it's kinda insulting to both women and the audience, which to begin with are treated like simpletons nowadays.

If the film turns out to be a masterpiece I'll eat my words but come on. It's just starting to emerge as a pattern in my opinion and is probably helping some of these projects nobody wants get off the ground as a selling point. It's just so much more feelings-driven or political than it is genuine or quality-based. I guess it's harmless, just cheap.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I'd understand this take for another film but this is literally Charlie's Angels haha. The entire premise since the 70s has been about female empowerment

@SpideyPuffsMJ - if this was something like Ghostbusters 2016 I might agree with you, but Charlie's Angels is an existing property with history. The franchise is about female action hero spies. That's always been the story. Dont make this a Social Justice issue when it completely doesn't need to be. And there are plenty of unbelievable over the top male lead action movies that you dont make Social Justice issues out of. Let women play too. Who [frick]ing cares? It's just a movie bro.

People like you hurt arguments about equality. Like females are the only genders producing half baked and poorly conceived action movies... men have been staring in shit action movies since forever, now women get a few and it's this huge scheme and feelings driven and political? Lol give me a break.
SpideyPuffsMJ
SpideyPuffsMJ - 4/11/2019, 11:06 AM
@DillonEnnis - I just think it's taking the same route of using the annoying politically charged time we're in to make a reboot no one wants to see. I don't think women were demanding another Angels reboot. The last show revival bombed.
DillonEnnis
DillonEnnis - 4/11/2019, 11:09 AM
@SpideyPuffsMJ - I don't know man haha I just think you're making something that isn't political political. No one "asks" for most movies that get made. Studios have recognizable IPs, and make movies with those recognizable IPs, and reboot them all the time.

@PTM - "People like you hurt arguments about equality. Like females are the only genders producing half baked and poorly conceived action movies... "

They aren't. I don't go to see the Expendables either. They're both dumb action films, like you said. I think I'm just tired of hearing generic speeches about how amazing a cast is or characters that have never even existed. It's the way it's pitched to the audience that I'm just tired of frankly. I loved Annihilation because it was a good movie, not because it fought to define that women can work together and not be love interests. It just happened to do that and portray then normally. I'm not shitting on women making action movies, who cares. It's the shameless pandering and thinking people need to be instructed that women can lead films that is just backwards to me. And when you put all of that behind failing movies, I think it arguably does more harm to that cause than good.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - just a little inside scoop, Bruce Willis cant really do John Mcclane shit. Arnold Schwarzenegger cant really do Dutch or Terminator shit. Sylvester Stallone cant box like Rocky or go on killing rampages like Rambo. Surprise surprise, its actually all just acting and none of those male leads are ingenuous and deserving of their characters accolades, it's just a role and it's still pretending. The only reason you feel females are undeserving is because you a little bit sexist bruh. This would be an issue for you if you weren't. It's ok, dont tense up upon the realization that you have a sexist double standard. Its something society has conditioned us to see without us being aware. But ignorance is not an excuse, now it's time to challenge your notion of self and question why you feel only men can play pretend action stars and do inhumanly impossible shit. There are female soldiers in the real world, female spies, female mixed martial artists, female marksmen, female body builders, female cops, female detectives, female heroes. Women just [frick]ing headlining Wrestlemania and had the most interesting storyline and fight in the entire WWE for gods sake. Females are very capable and very deserving. They are only getting what they deserve, and if they want to make basic action movies or top level action movies or whatever movies that guys make... good on them. Especially when they arent stealing a franchise from existing characters like Ghostbusters 2016, I'm all for this Charlie's Angels movie and hope it's good, because I have no reason to hope that it's bad.

@DillonEnnis - thank you for also being the voice of reason. Most movies aren't asked for, and Studios definitely dont let once popular properties collect dust forever when they have someone pitch a script they think will make money. Hollywood is a business and its incredibly short sighted to think a majority of these big budget films are made with complete artistic integrity. This is definitely not a social issue but clearly he is upset by women led action movies coming out these days because hes tired of seeing women get to do the same shit men have been doing since always. "It just feels forced"... right cuz the Transporter movies or Fast and Furious movies are super believable and only tracks when men do that stuff... but I draw the line if it's a woman riding a motorcycle out of a skyscraper and jumping onto a helicopter and killing everyone inside and diving to safety just before crashing it into the building... only men can believably so that stuff. My suspension of disbelief doesn't work for females. I'm not sexist though, dont be mean to me.
SpideyPuffsMJ
SpideyPuffsMJ - 4/11/2019, 11:44 AM
@PTM - Lmao thanks professor, I don't have a pulse and didn't realize female cops, female bodybuilders or female detectives exist. Why does everyone think men are somehow stuck in the 1950's. It feels like we've gone backwards and have to justify stupid shit like this and treat audiences like school children. Women can do whatever they want, I don't care. I'm allowed to criticize cliche comments from a director and not be excited about a shameless reboot, male or female. I don't want the movie to fail or be bad, I'm not gonna see it either way, to each their own. I'm sure it will break records bro, God knows when you wanna inspire confidence in a film in pre-production you cast Kristen Stewart. You had a point somewhere in there but you lost it along the way with your soapbox about trying to inform me of the last 30 years of women advancing in society.

Dude I neeeeever said any of that. I feel like you missed my point completely and took it for osme anti-SJW men's rights speech. I'm just tired of people having to JUSTIFY a dumb action movie led by females as anything other than making a dumb action movie. It's the publications treat these films and their directors too, and I'm on this site a little too much. But, no, I'm not offended by seeing women beat men up or ride motorcycles, it's not my suspension of disbelief not working. I genuinely look forward to the day when these kinda films come and go on their own merit and don't have to justify why they're being made, like the Expendables. When people don't have to freak out and think they have to educate everyone that women can have freedom on screen...of course they can.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - dude, you are completely changing your argument because you realized what you said was sexist and idiotic. First you were crying fowl because they are forcing women into action movies to advance an agenda because that's what Hollywood is all about, female empowerment and unearned praise.

"...trope of putting a small group of women together for a cast in some gender-defying typically male-dominated genre film and the entire premise being based on the people working on it heaping unearned praise on the characters/actresses. It's starting to get tired."

Your words, not mine.

Now because we called you out on that, you flip the script to say it just looks like a bad movie and you can criticize it if you want and why does everyone think men are somehow stuck in the 1950's?

"I'm actually starting to see this trope of putting a small group of women together for a cast in some gender-defying typically male-dominated genre film and the entire premise being based on the people working on it heaping unearned praise on the characters/actresses. It's starting to get tired."

Comments like THAT are why people think men are stuck in the 1950's. And I'll soapbox towards dumb ass comments like yours till I'm [frick]ing blue in the face. Level up your thinking man.

@PTM - Yeah I'll stand by that, idk how that's sexist or controversial. It's annoying the amount of work that goes into justifying it's existence, from people like you. Annoying Hollywood trends are annoying. Just happens to be Charlies Angels this time.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - I don't know if you're upset because they are making a female-centric action film? Or are you upset because the movie will suck because you think it will? Your opinion and point you're making are quite negative and misogynistic. The reason they are making it and will continue to make female action films is that they can be good stories and entertaining. Too bad they will also make female empowerment films because of past treatment and a male-dominated industry that had a similar underlying attitude like yours that tend to always put women in a box telling them what they can and cannot do. If you read the energy in how you delivered your initial comment you will see how wrong it is if you replaced the word male and female and then you will see your misogyny. And if a movie is really disingenuous and not so good just like some that are made, then you can have your critique. But just let women flourish and make an action movie and chill bro...Even if we have wack ones. I never have seen the Ghostbusters reboot yet not because of a woman gender bender cast but because someone said it sucked lol

@SpideyPuffsMJ - you're wasting you time - you cant criticise anything "female led" these days without being branded sexist or misognistic regardless of the nature or validity of your comments and you cant explain them to people who are determined to dismiss you. Its the state of debate now.

I get what you're saying, it was pretty clear to me - it's not about having any problem with female lead action films which have existed for years(though to a much lesser degree to male led ones) its about the branding of them as somehow being inspirational, aspirational or breaking the mold purely because they're female led.
