Daniel Craig On The Tone Of Sam Mendes' JAMES BOND 24

Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes will both be back for the 24th instalment of the James Bond franchise, and the former talks briefly here about the tone of the follow-up to Skyfall, saying that he hopes the upcoming movie will "reclaim some of the old irony".

Earlier this year, it was finally confirmed that both director Sam Mendes and star Daniel Craig would be returning for a follow-up to Skyfall. While we know that John Logan will be back on writing duties, there are absolutely no plot details available as of yet. However, Ralph Fiennes as the new 'M' and sother familiar Bond elements like 'Q' and 'Miss Moneypenny' should mean that the film is tonally different; something which Craig was asked to comment on in a recent interview with Vulture. "Hopefully we’ll reclaim some of the old irony," he said of the tone, "and make sure it doesn’t become pastiche. I can’t do shtick, I’m not very good at it. Unless it kind of suddenly makes sense. Does that make sense? I sometimes wish I hammed it up more, but I just can’t do it very well, so I don’t do it." What do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

They should call the new Bond the Exterminator. Since Ant-Man is out on the same day.

I honestly hated the moments in Skyfall where it harkened back to the old Bond. I liked the new take Craig brought to the role. The back and forth with Q and the return of Moneypenny were terrible.

I don't want the old Roger Moore type Bond. Skyfall was one of if not the best Bond films ever. Give us more of that!

@BackwardGalaxy

I disagree, i know where you are coming from but they didn't do it in the cheesy way that earlier bond films did it, it was a great nod done it a tone that fit the rest of the film.

As long as it doesn't get too snarky. Best to reel it in before they wind up in Roger Moore territory.

They definitely don't need to go later Roger Moore style. I'm glad that they introduced Q though and hopefully we'll get some cool gadgets to go with the action.

Can't wait! Skyfall came out last year on my birthday and I was so pissed I couldn't make it to see it in theaters. College work will be done on time so that I can see Bond 24 or "Devil May Care"!

Some really bad writing, direction and acting destroyed Skyfall for me. So for the first time in a long time, I'm not excited for a Bond movie.

@Levi - Ant-Man's release date will change. They'd be damn crazy not to move it away from Bond.

@Nomis - Definitely Connery's best Bond film by a mile, the fight on the train with Robert Shaw is still classic!

My favoutite from the old line of films was On Her Majesty's Secret Service, it was as close to a true book adaptation of the character and plot as they have ever got.

Those films got hollywoodized with too many silly gadgets and template villains with sidekicks. The Craig era has brought the fundemental Bond from the books back to where it should be, no gagets, no silly swiss army knife car and no stupid comedy.

From Russia with Love is amazing. Next film I want more Casino Royale and less Skyfall. After Quantum we were promised a Bond in his prime ready to take shit on after finishing his revenge ordeal. Then we get an "old dog" Bond with self parodying references (ejection seat in the car. And where the he'll is Quantum and Mr. White?

Skyfall reminded me of the new Trek films... much nonesense in the plot, but otherwise well constructed.

Some more playful charm would not be unwelcome in Craig's Bond films though.

I'm in my late 30s and grew up with Moore as the 007 of my generation. I've enjoyed every actor and all the movies except DAF. You younger guys have to watch Connery and Moore in the context of the time periods. Moore was bond from early 70s to mid 80s. Think Of the politics, social issues, economics and technology changes during that time. True fans can appreciate the ever evolving movies and the books independently of one another. Craig has been awesome. I'm older now and live the fruity action, but as an 7 or 8 year old kid, FYEO and Octopussy were awesome. MGMs Never Say Never Again was also a great Thunderball remake. We all have our favorites, but when there's 24 movies of the same character over 50 years there is bound to be some disparity. Let people have thee opinions. We connect with different Bonds for personal reasons, mine is my childhood; my dad taking me to see them every November.

I just don't get the people on this site. Skyfall comes out and gets praised. Now it's hated. Same thing happened with The Dark Knight. Yet a very mediocre movie like The Wolverine comes out and everyone loves it.

Whatever, like DrRockit13 said, Skyfall was one of if not the best Bond film by far. After the step back Quantum took this was a huge step forward. Perfect film for the anniversary, best Bond theme in probably over two decades, just enough subtle nods to Bond films of the past with a combination of Casino Royale Bond and moments that wouldn't be out of place in the older films (Komodo pit,) a more personal Bond and finally a personal view and somewhat of a deconstruction of MI6, the silhouette fight, cinematography, the rats speech, great send off for Judi Dench.....I can go on and on about how great the film is. Yet people want to stay stuck on plot holes or mistakes(which every film has) that majority of them probably didn't notice until users on the internet passed them around. I think people forgot how to be entertained and just escape in a film.

@Nomis - Agreed on all points mate, Lazenby and Peter Hunt deserved a crack at Diamonds Are Forever and Live and Let Die for a decent trilogy of flick for their run. Peter Hunt's fight scenes in OHMSS are full of great punches and choreography. Telly Savalas needed no template henchman, he did his own fighting and killing, a proper villain!

@bs77 - I'm in my mid 40's fast approach the big 5-0! I've grown up with every Bond on screen but the character for me is the one in the books, not the screen. Everyone had something as Bond..

1) Connery initially had great physique for everything physical and massive appeal to women, his voice alone send all the women in my house loopy.

2) George Lazenby had to tailor his performance to replicate Sean Connery but to be honest he would have made the role his own if he had a chance to fully step out of Connery's shadow. He looked great in action, easily amongst the most convincing out of the actors to don the role.

3) Roger Moore had a lot of genuine English charm but way too much wit and next to nothing dangerous about his mannerisms. His physique suited a butler more than a field agent but his undeniable popularity still baffles me. I stopped going cinema to see Bond during his era.

4) Timothy Dalton remains my favorite actor in the role, the book describes Bond as blue eyed, black haired with a close resemblance to Hoagy Charmicheal the Jazz pianist and nobody fit the description more than Dalton. Even the late Desmond "Q" Lewellyn claimed he was by far the most perfect for the role he ever worked with. As far ac getting the character as close to the books as possible, Dalton did that even down to the smoking.

5) Pearce Brosnan was like a new and improved Roger Moore, if only he could have bulked up a little more convincingly and loose half those ridiculous gadgets, he would have probably left a more serious mark on the franchise before Craig rewrote history.

6) Daniel Craig made me U-turn. I initially slammed his casting because facially he looks nothing like the description from the books except for the eyes. But goddamn did he act the hell of every one before him, he delivered everything and then some without any cheese or corny crap hindering his performance. He's brought the character back to its roots for a whole new generation and as well as those who only know of the Hollwoodized version. I just think he's looking very seasoned in the role now and should pass it on to..

7?) Philip Winchester or for those watching 'Strike Back' on Cinemax or Sky, he's Sergeant Michael Stonebridge, the greatest British Soldier to hit the small screen. This guy has all the criteria to make a great Bond as a follow-up to Daniel Craig. I hope he gets the part rather than some popular actor who gets overused in too many Hollywood movies.

Gotta agree with DrRockit13 and DTor91. Skyfall is definitely near the top of the list in terms of best Bond movie in recent memory. Especially the way Quantum of Solace dropped the ball, Skyfall was a huge step forward in quality, action, plot, etc. With all the nods towards the past Bond films, it was the perfect way to celebrate 50th anniversary. Too bad Craig only has a few more Bond movies left in him, hes one of the best actors to play the part.

To be honest I don't really like the old James Bond movie (except a few of the the Connery ones). They are just way too campy and silly and make James Bond this indestructible super agent who is never in any real danger. Daniel Craig's movies are by far the best James Bond movies ever and are the best thing that has ever happened to the Bond franchise. In the Craig movies he feels more like a real person (an extremely tough and well train person but one nonetheless) and he brings more emotion and vulnerability to the role.

I am very excited for this movie and hope that Bond movies in the future keep the serious tone like these movies have had. People might say Quantum of Solice is not very good and yes, it is not as good as the other two but it is still much better than all the Pierce Brosnan movies.

Craig said, "some of the old irony", so he obviously wasn't talking about Roger Moore or Dalton. Connery and some Brosnan, yes; just don't expect to hear a lot of groan-inducing quips. The brilliant exchanges between bond and Q and Bond, M and Moneypenny should keep us aware that the new banter in Bond is purely clever, not sophomoric.

Bond 24/Devil May Care should be lighter tonally compared to Skyfall. Ease up on the and heavy drama for this one.

Even with that said, Skyfall is my favorite Bond film to date, so I'm really glad Sam Mendes is back in the director's chair.

@cipher Lol! Some of the Roger Moore Bond movies are very campy, but he had some great outings during his run:

-The Spy Who Loved Me
-For Your Eyes Only
-The Man with the Golden Gun
-Live and Let Die

@SuperGuy It's actually rumored that Penelope Cruz is being looked at to play a Bond girl in Bond 24. :)

If it's legit, it is about damn time!
