Steven Spielberg is a busy man, and after filming and releasing both The Post and Ready Player One back to back, the legendary director is patiently waiting for his next project to gain steam. But due to the latest turn of events, it seems as though Indiana Jones 5 will not be it.
When it was initially announced by Lucasfilm, a 2019 release date was was their projected goal. The latest news on the franchise before today gave fans a release date during the summer of 2020, with production starting next year. But now it seems that it will miss that deadline entirely. With a new writer on board, the film's production has been delayed to an unspecified date.
Not fully satisfied by David Koepp’s (Jurassic Park) first draft, Lucasfilm and Spielberg have decided that it was in their best interest to hire a new writer. Jonathan Kasdan, who co-wrote Solo: A Star Wars Story with Lawrence Kasdan (Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark), his father, has been tapped to rewrite the script.
If things go smoothly, one can speculate that the film will commence production in 2020. At that point Ford, who plays the titular character, will be 78. Even though he has shown serious commitment recently through great action performances in The Force Awakens and Blade Runner 2049, Disney still has to get this film off the ground before it's too late.
