With the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic slowing down everything in Hollywood, the long-planned fifth film in the Indiana Jones franchise was recently postponed by an entire year. Because of that, the movie won't be released until July 2022, but longtime producer Frank Marshall has today shared some key updates on where things stand with the project.

He started by confirming that Logan director James Mangold will indeed helm the film, while Steven Spielberg will remain closely attached as one of Indiana Jones 5's producers.

"His love of the franchise," Marshall said of what makes Mangold the right fit. "He’s a wonderful filmmaker. I think he also has a relationship with Harrison. It was all of the right pieces coming together, at the right time."

Pre-production, meanwhile, continues, and Marshall would explain to Collider how the virus has affected the script. "The number one thing, obviously, is the safety of everybody -- the cast, the crew, and all of us. So, we’re looking at the guidelines that are coming, slowly, from the health experts and the studios and the different parts of the business, and we’re just trying to incorporate everything, so we can move forward and be safe," he explains.

"It’s going to obviously slow things down, so we’re trying to adjust. You won’t see a lot of big crowd scenes, for example, for a while. There won’t be any more craft service. It’s a moving target right now. There are a lot of people working on the solutions to be able to work and be safe."

Marshall concluded by revealing that work on the latest iteration of the script had only just begun before the shutdowns hit, and confirmed that a new production date has not been decided yet.
