NO TIME TO DIE Crosses $700 Million Worldwide; Will It Top F9: THE FAST SAGA As 2021's #1 Movie?

Believe it or not, a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie isn't the highest-grossing release of 2021 at the global box office, but after hitting another major benchmark, will No Time to Die overthrow F9?

2021 was always going to be a difficult year for the global box office, though we have seen it rebound to some extent in recent months. China has been a big help for some blockbusters, but with Marvel Studios pushed out of the Middle Kingdom (partly due to past comments from Simu Liu and Chloé Zhao), neither Shang-Chi nor Eternals could increase their takings by releasing in that country.

That's left the door open for other blockbusters to steal the show, and while F9: The Fast Saga still holds the title for the year's highest-grossing movie worldwide, No Time to Die has topped it internationally. With $558. 2 million at the international box office and over $150 million in North America, Daniel Craig's final appearance as James Bond has grossed $708.6 million.

A result like that is nothing short of jaw-dropping in this pandemic era, and proof, perhaps, that MGM and Universal Pictures made the right decision with those seemingly endless release date delays.

F9 remains the global king with $721 million, and with No Time to Die now available on PVOD platforms, it's hard to say whether it can earn enough to win the year at the worldwide box office. Of course, 2021 isn't over yet, and there are those who believe Spider-Man: No Way Home is the only blockbuster that stands a chance of hitting the $1 billion mark by the time all is said and done.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage had a good weekend by becoming only the second movie of 2021 to pass $200 million at the domestic box office (the other is Shang-Chi). Now, it's grossed $441.5 million worldwide, which is bound to leave Sony confident in this franchise's future potential.

I think if any film hits 1 billion or even gets near, it'll be Spider-Man No Way Home.

Didn't feel like a Bond film to me, i was not a fan. Maybe this is Bond for a new age who knows.

@TheManWithoutFear - Don't think the Bond movie was necessarily for the new age, I think it was just a personal choice of yours, which is cool and by no means a bad thing. Most of the earlier Bond movies were basically stand alone films, loosely tied together. The Daniel Craig Bond was one long inter-connected story that had its final chapter. I mean at the beginning of this most recent film was a very strong reference to the events in his first Bond film Casino Royale, if you get where I'm coming from.

Regardless of that not at all surprised about the box office tally. I'd actually be a bit mire surprised if it hadn't gone this way. Now just have to wait for Spidey's new movie to make an impact. We shall see.

@Mugens - It was and that's why OG bond fans hated the film. it only got "passing scores" because they gave a "decent end" to this iteration of james bond and daniel craig, for which none of the past actors ever got.

Watching No Time to Die, they have no clue what to do with bond. They can't decide if they want to stick with the dark/gritty tone of casino royale and skyfall or convert to the silly ridiculousness of quantum solace/spectre. Then they try introducing the idea of some stupid spin-offs with different 00's, CIA agent in ana de armes character, and the surviving team of bond's crew, etc. Bond franchise can't decide if they want to rip off Jason Bourne, Mission Impossible, or the MCU. I didn't like any of these concepts in No time to die and that's why I thought it was bad. Daniel Craig was phoning it in so none of the emotional scene's hit, they focused too much on the failed romance from spectre that no 1 liked, and the villain was terrible.

By pandering to the new age, they lost most of its existing fanbase. Bond's franchise value is just going down at this point.

watched No Time to Die yesterday. superb final movie for Daniel Craig in my opinion. second best outing for me (Casino Royale is still my favourite).

interesting that so many still talking about who could be the next bond when they made a big show of the ladies in this movie. Felix's replacement lady kicked some serious ass and the new 007 did the same before gifting the designation of 007 back to Bond.

i do think they were trying to gauge the reaction towards a female bond in this movie before making any decision.

still would like Henry Cavill for the replacement but after Craig smashing it out of the park from being such a left field choice originally im open to whomever they go with.

@DemonTweeks -

I watched it the other day and thought it was a fitting end for Craig and made sense for his version of the character.

I liked both Nomi and Paloma as characters, thought they were interesting and held their own.

Now that Amazon owns Bond, I can see future instalment have spin offs.

I'm excited to see where they go next and hope they give it to Cavill.

I always thought Daniel Craig would play a great Connor Macleod. So, they chose Cavill.
