BOX OFFICE: MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE ROGUE NATION Dethrones ANT-MAN With $52 Million

As expected, Christopher McQuarrie's Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation has gone straight to the top of the box office in North America this weekend, but where does that leave Marvel's Ant-Man?

Hailed by some as the best Mission: Impossible movie to date, Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation earned $20 million on Friday and is expected to gross around $52 million for the weekend.

The Christopher McQuarrie helmed movie has already had the biggest opening day in the history of the franchise, so part six will no doubt start moving ahead very soon (Tom Cruise has been quoted as saying it will be next year). For a while now, Cruise hasn't had a huge amount of luck at the domestic box office, with the majority of his movies - Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow for example - performing much better overseas; Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation should mark a turn of fortunes for him though. At this point, it's surprising he hasn't done a comic book movie!

After remaining at #1 last weekend, Ant-Man has now slipped to #4 with Vacation and Minions slipping past it. The Marvel movie is expected to make around $12 million this weekend.

Did you see Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation this weekend or did Ant-Man tempt you back?

Love me some ROGUE NATION. None of the setpieces match the Burj Khalifa, but McQuarrie gave some of those Brian De Palma feels along with Brad Bird's GHOST PROTOCOL.

Ghost Protocol > Rogue Nation > Brian De Palma > J.J. Abrams >>>>>>>>>>>>>>> John Woo's doves.

@KurtWagner1225 Ghost Protocol and Rogue Nation are like 1 and 1a for me right now. Abrams' installment to the franchise was a film I LOVED when I first watched, but I start to like it less and less the more times I watch it whenever it's on TV. It's a dull affair for me despite PSH's performance and the shot of Tom Cruise bouncing off the car during the bridge sequence.

Definitely recommend reviisting the 1st installment; believe it's still on Netflix. There's a lot of deception and double crosses, and Brian De Palma knows how to frame some beautiful shots. Not to mention it's the most claustrophobic and tension-filled of the franchise.

About to finally go see Ant Man (I live in Spain) so I will add another 10.00 euro. Don't forget to add that into the estimates @joshwilding
Also, long live Tom Cruise.

@KurtWagner1225 Yeah that's great, but we barely got any Monaghan. Maggie Q and Rhys Meyers had no character, which is why it's just unfulfilling for me in re-watches. Definitely agree with Rogue Nation having a more intriguing storyline even if the narrative is similar (IMF disavowed and/or Ethan and his team go rogue).

Saw it yesterday. It was such a fun entertainment! Cruise does it again. And definitely want to see more of Ilsa. So far I would rank the movies as:

1. MI: Rogue Nation
2. MI: Ghost Protocol
3. MI
4. MI:3
5. MI:2

@KurtWagner1225 Haha yeah, that's the ONLY moment they have but then it gets interrupted abruptly by Tom Cruise.

Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio are the only true movie stars left in the industry. Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt have yet to prove that they can open a non-brand film on their own, Will Smith hasn't had a hit in almost a decade, Meryl Streep targets the older demographic only, and Brad Pitt and George Clooney are just perceived as movie stars that gets butts in the seats opening weekend.

@Omarvels lol do you think marvel would take an even bigger risk with ant man and make a reboot about Eric O Grady? Or do you think they'll get em right by making it about hank and Jan?

"You guys do realize Rogue Nation has a larger budget and is expected to have a smaller opening weekend than Ant-Man...

Kind of makes someone like @newmutantRETURNS look like a real idiot."
