Released in December 2011, Warner Bros. Pictures’ Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (a sequel to the 2009 revival of the popular character) has now hit $529 million in the worldwide box office, with an estimated $186.7 million domestically and $342.3 million internationally, surpassing its predecessor’s worldwide gross of $524.4 million. Below is an official announcement from WB:

“Our successful box office continues to prove the appeal of Sherlock Holmes, especially in the hands of guy Ritchie and his amazing cast, led by Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law,” says Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution. “The film had outstanding results throughout the holidays and continued to gain traction well into 2012.”

“Rolling out this film internationally has been tremendously exciting, as the film has clearly resonated with audiences around the globe,” added Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. “The first ‘Sherlock Holmes’ was such a tremendous success overseas, and to surpass that number in these same markets is truly a remarkable achievement. We congratulate the filmmakers and cast, as well as our international teams, on these excellent results.”

“‘Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows’ gave moviegoers another opportunity to experience Guy Ritchie’s fun and inventive take on the legendary detective,” said Sue Kroll, the Studio's President, Worldwide Marketing. “The movie is a great adventure—complete with action, humor and great characters. Congratulations to the filmmakers and cast, who were truly our partners in bringing Sherlock Holmes back to an enthusiastic worldwide audience.”

With the success of the sequel, expect news on a third installment soon. In the mean time, Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows is in theaters now, and will hit Blu-Ray June 12th.

AWESOME!

This for the suckers and pussies who started yapping their [frick]ing mouth the first two weeks this movie came out. Quite frankly too often critics make you realize how much frustrated and envious losers they are.

Good Job Critics!!! lol Now suck on Sherlock's...

...and I guarantee, you will have the same very successful results with 'John Carter', even though it 's not a sequel. Everyone I've talked to liked it alot. Not ONE person said 'Meh' or 'it sucked'.
Not one!
Good movie's need to be supported so studio's make more GOOD MOVIES!
Let the bombs bomb, and the good one's be rewarded!

@headloopper: I thought John Carter was very average.

I like GoS, my wife didn't like it as much as the first though

Congrats to the movie. The first movie was really, really entertaining. And there was no doubt in my mind that the sequel would suck or wouldn't do well. Haven't seen it yet, but hopefully I can get it soon on Blu-Ray.

@starscream4president - I agreee with you there, man. They obviously don't know a good and entertaining movie, like Sherlock Holmes. I mean, what, are they blind? Look at how many people liked the first movie, and now the sequel. But still, we should at least respect their own opinion(s). :)

@headlopper - LOVED John Carter. I honestly didn't know what to expect from the film. Minutes into it, I was into it. They did, in my opinion, an excellent job with the film. I hope, HOPE, that they make the sequel. Again, loved it. :)

Stay EPIC, my friends!

It's good for what it is: Sherlock Holmes Action Hero. critics have a big stick up their ass because it's not like the stories, but there are a million versions of those. This is just something different. Different, but good. If they had done the same old thing critics would bitch about it being to familiar. I liked it, and am waiting for the next one.

There's nothing NEW about Hollywood turning something away from its source material into yet another Action Comedy because that's all they raise the American youth on, its the only kind of film they watch! Charlie's Angels, Starsky and Hutch, 21 Jump Street etc etc. When they actually make a drama instead of an action comedy then the movie flops because its an alien scenario to general audiences, they expect everything to be action film, action comedy or comedy!

They're merely exploiting the limitations of their audiences, this kind of ridiculousness only happens in America. Guy Ritchie's made ten times better movies than this but he had to sell his should to get a financial hit in Hollywood. He didn't want RDJ as Sherlock, he looks and acts nothing like the character, but the studio wanted him after Iron Man made him popular again and there you go.. the most un-Sherlock portrayal of all time honoured character turned into the only acceptable form common audiences will watch.

The end of the world can't come soon enough if those Mayans are right!

@RorMachine - Dunno if you're being sarcastic but that's nothing new either..

Spider-man 3 out-grossed both the other two movies.

X-Men 3 out-grossed both the other two movies.

Transformers 3 Out-grossed the other two movies.

Quantum of Solace out-grossed Casino Royale domestically.

There's literally a lot of sequels that surpass the originals all the time, TDK obliterated Batman Begins box office too!

@Ceejay

You taking a high and mighty stance with regard to the intelligence of America audiences is nothing new ether. Sorry us yanks can't be self righteous prick snobs
like our friends in the UK ,but we are not all the "That blew up good" redneck hicks some of you euros like to make us out to be. We actually can support good dramas every now and then. Schindler's List, great comedy. Saving Private Ryan, laugh riot
The Dark Knight, busted a gut. What about the works of Robert Zemeckis,Paul Greengrass,Oliver Stone,Martin Scorsese,Michael Mann,Ridley Scott,Clint Eastwood,Tim Robbins,Mel Gibson,Spike Lee,Catherine Bigelow? All those people turned out great dramas that sold well with American audiences.Your premise is that Hollywood adapts every thing into an action comedy, action film or comedy, then you go on to list Charlies Angels,Starsky and Hutch and 21 jump street as examples.
Are you for real? all of those shows were action shows. You might as well have bitched that the Dukes of Hazzard movie didn't star Meryl Streep and wasn't directed by Terrance Malik. Your beef doesn't appear to be with American audiences in general but rather with America youth, the choices they make and the fact that America studios actually practice capitalism and give their audiences what they want instead of what guys like you think they should see.If you don't like America, just say so instead of hiding behind an argument which anybody can see is a total fail.
Enjoy yourself supporting indie film making.USA USA (hope you see the sarcasm)

as it should. the first one's fun. the sequel's great. Jared Harris really delivers as the evil genius Moriarty. and RDJ's Sherlock's less annoying than he was in the original. so was Jude Law's Watson.

THIS is how a sequel should have been. an improvement to the one before it.
