TARZAN Reboot Won't Go Into Production Until 2014; Jamie Foxx WAS In Talks For Unknown Role

David Yates is still attached to direct Tarzan for Warner Bros., but production on the movie has been shut down due to concerns about the budget. That means it's been pushed back to next year, while it has also been revealed that Jamie Foxx was in talks for a lead role.

Deadline reports that David Yates' planned reboot of the Tarzan franchise has run into trouble as Warner Bros. has today made the decision to halt production. The reimagining of the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs tale had Alexander Skarsgard attached to play the title role, while Jessica Chastain was said to be in talks to play Jane. It sounds as if the reason for this is due to budgetary concerns, a problem which also plagued The Lone Ranger during its early stages. Whether this project can be saved or if it will go the same way as Akira and Paradise Lost remains to be seen. The site adds that the studio were courting Jamie Foxx to play the third lead, but no deal was put in place. Warner Bros. are hoping to try again next year, but had never actually green lit the film.

Disappointing. Has potential to be really good. I'd imagine that the role that they were trying to get Foxx for was the one that they originally had planned for Samuel Jackson.

@jerryblake

Fox isn't exactly box office gold...

In any case, turning Tarzan into a buddy-cop flick and sending him on secret missions for Queen Victoria have nothing in common with the original character- so why bother?

@CrashTest

Wouldn't the story of a black man raised by animals in the wilderness of Africa coming into contact with the embodiment of White Western culture come across less as a "different approach" and more as a "thinly veiled representation of historic colonialism and the concept of the White Man's Burden"?

Well [frick]! I was really looking forward a new Lord of the Jungle film.

Well have to go back to watch Tarzan: Epic Adventures. That was awesome series. :)

I bet Jamie Foxx would have been La the Queen of the Leopard Men. He plays woman pretty good.

Paradise Lost, Akira, At the Mountains of Madness, Arthur & Lancelot, The Dark Tower and now Tarzan. It seems WB refuses to spend over $100M on a film that isn't a proven property.

I'm bummed that its being delayed but I don't want to see a crappy version. Next to Batman Tarzan is my favorite literary character, read every book and seen every movie, and has yet to be done properly.Hollywood doesn't seem to understand the duality of the character. I would love to see a faithful adaptation and the right actor for the part. This means no blonde Tarzan! And no Jamie Foxx please. I won't be seeing Amazing Spiderman 2 as a result of him being in it.

JF shouldn't be cast as Tarzan. Its like doing Black Panther movie with Brad Pitt in the lead.

Stupid ass mofo's would rather do Lone Ranger. Dumbass execs don't know a good thing when they see it.

They've been making Tarzan films for decades without insane budgets. Seriously...why would a Tarzan film need a massive budget? CGI animals? Landscapes? Seriously these things exist and can be done in a practical effects styles...
