Some viewers are interpreting The Incredibles 2 as Pixar’s response to the #MeToo movement, but the film's director recently admitted that any connection the sequel has to the current social climate is purely coincidental.

The Incredibles sequel features a role reversal, with Helen Parr taking center stage as the face of a new initiative to resurrect the age of "supers."

The upcoming film is coming out at a time where diversity and gender equality are huge discussion points, so for many it’s exciting to see the spotlight shine on the strong female character this time around. Many people have read further into it than even the filmmakers anticipated and view it as Pixar making some kind of statement on the matter.

Screen Rant visited Pixar Animation Studios during a press day earlier this month, and the film's director Brad Bird was asked about diversity in The Incredibles films. He brought up the #MeToo movement in his response, claiming he's had Helen's evolution in-mind since the first film.

We are just telling the story we want to tell. Some people have remarked – we just started talking about this – that we geared this towards the #MeToo movement because it’s got a female lead and all this stuff. I had that idea right on the heels of the first film. That’s the oldest idea in this movie, that and exploring Jack Jack’s powers. We don’t really respond to whatever the thing of the moment is because our lead times are so long. We just gotta tell the stories we want to tell.

Bird started writing the script for The Incredibles 2 back in 2015, years before the Harvey Weinstein scandal flipped Hollywood inside-out. #MeToo, #TimesUp, and any other related campaign were not prevalent a few years ago, so it would've been quite difficult/implausible for Bird to integrate them into the narrative.

What do you think about the director's comments?

Has anyone made this comparison? I thought #MeToo was about sexual harassment in Hollywood. How would The Incredibles 2 have any connection to that?

"Some viewers are interpreting The Incredibles 2 as Pixar’s response to the #MeToo movement"

Well, some viewers are dumb.

You sure do

@MasterMix - don't let this distract you from the fact that Lightning McQueen blew a 2 lap lead in the Piston Cup

@BlackBeltJones - If Mcqueen is leading a race by 1 lap or more he's going to [frick] it up somehow,it happens every single time

Frankly every Pixar movie changes the character focus
Toy Story - Buzz Lightyear
Toy Story 2 - Woody
Toy Story 3 - Buzz and Woody equally
Cars - Lightning McQueen
Cars 2 - Mater
Cars 3 - Lightning again
Monsters Inc. - Sully
Monsters University - Mike
Finding Nemo - Marlon
Finding Dory - Dory
The Incredibles - Mr. Incredible
The Incredibles 2 - Elastic Girl

@MasterMix - I would say that all of the Toy Story films so far have focused equally on Buzz and Woody, although it does seem like the fourth one will mainly focus on Woody.

@Pantherpool - You are right about that. It's just that Toy Story focused on Buzz existential crisis while Toy Story 2 focused on Woody's existential crisis. They're still pretty equal though.

@MasterMix - Pixar is so evenly keeled that it is borderline offensive to suggest that they might even being doing anything unfairly. The fact that adults arguably enjoy and appreciate their movies more than kids is a testament to their work. But people always find things to nitpick. May as well argue that UP! is a about a creepy old pedophile. But this MeToo stuff is a stretch.

People are idiots if they think a KIDS movies will be made to be an answer to #MeToo.

@BootyPeep - Oh, so a kids movie like Happy Feet wasn't blatant pandering to a particular political climate? Pun intended as well.

The more important question to ask is if she got paid as much as Craig T. Nelson.

I wasn’t thinking about that at all looking at the trailers.

Never saw the comparison made at all.

Metoo is about awareness for sexual harrasment and abuse

Metoo is not just a movement for women but all victims.

I believe him when he says it not geared to the metoo audience since that does not appear to be the case at all.

Why do people have to make everything political and not be able to just enjoy a movie for what it is, that being a movie?

Nothing wrong with a strong female lead role, but the "movement" as it stands is irrelevant to the synopsis of this movie's plot.

I'm lowkey expecting for Wiston Deavor to flirt with Elastigirl it's the obvious cliché(working mother harassed by overconfident boss)

I know this Metoo comparison was a big reach(even by Elastigirl standards) but let's not fool ourselves thinking Pixar would shy away from social commentary, when the first Incredibles came out it was criticized by some outlets that thought the movie was a Ayn Rand propaganda

I remember seeing comments on the youtube page pretty much instantly after the one trailer was put up (not that it should be surprising, the YT comments section is where humanity goes to die). These morons in our society, as soon as one thing comes along that is anything outside the formulaic, family/gender normal dynamic, it's "oh here we go, does every movie have to be so political??", "Hollywood already bowing down to the SJWs!!"

[frick]s sake, these people...

feminism and the call for more female representation has been something that has been going on prevalently for the last maybe three or four years in the entertainment industry. the me too movement has only solidified that, buts it's something that has been happening for a long time.
it's obvious that the reason elastic girl is the lead in this movie is not because of their choice in storytelling, but because female empowerment and female representation is something that has been a common trend and thread in the entertainment industry for the past few years.
