THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART Builds To $35 Million Opening Weekend, A 50% Decline From Its Predecessor

With projections around the $50-$60 million mark, The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part is underperforming significantly. Is everything still awesome enough to justify another entry in the franchise?

When The LEGO Movie first hit theaters a half-decade ago, the hype surrounding the original was purely nostalgic. But since then there have been a whopping four installments in the franchise, all of which utilized the same novelty. Is the sequel's $35 million three-day total proof of the cinematic universe's oversaturation?

The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part opened to a disappointing $34.4 million domestically this weekend, which is $20 million below The LEGO Batman Movie and nearly 50% below the film that started it all. Though the film opened higher than The LEGO Ninjago Movie, that was expected due to the fact that the movie itself only earned $60 million total.

Warner Bros. waited five years for a direct follow up to The LEGO Movie, and fans can't help but wonder what took them so long in the first place.

With the average franchise multiplier at 3.35x, The LEGO Movie 2 is expected to finish at around $115 million, which means the sequel would ultimately gross almost $140 million less than the original. Depending on how frontloaded it is, the film will likely end its domestic run below the estimate. With a reported budget of $100 million this does not fare well for the future of the franchise. It is possible that overseas grosses will ultimately make the film profitable, but only time will tell.

I'm at the theater on an almost weekly basis and I've never seen a poster or trailer for this. No surprise it's blowing ass. Not to mention we've just finished up "[frick] you it's January" and are barely into february.

Did they even advertise it, I had forgotten about it. Didn't even know it was out yet.

They mismanaged this franchise with all of their others... when it hit, they touted how they could crank out multiple DCEU, Fantastic Beasts and Lego Movies, and they’ve driven all of those franchises into the ground trying. Seems like the DCEU is on the rebound now, but still...

Doing the Ninjago movie in theaters was a mistake... it really confused the idea of who these were for.

- Damn that sucks, I've really enjoyed the previous 2 movies and saw them in theaters, except Ninjago. Ninjago was definitely the weakest, but Justin Theroux carried that whole movie on his back with a little help from Jackie Chan (who should have been in it more) and made it enjoyable by elevation everyone they shared the screen with (instead of overshadowing them), kind of like him and Ant-Man carried Mute with their awesomeness.

- I'll probably see this one on blu-ray, as I have Alita to see this week and apparently Roma is getting a theater run, so I'll see if I can squeeze that into a double feature.

@8thDoctor - A ton of Oscar contenders are getting runs near me and I want to see some of them. I already saw At Eternity's Gate last week (AMAZING!). Cafarnaum, Blackkk Clansman and The Favorite are getting showings and I want to see them. The Green Book, If Beale Street Could Talk, Vice and Bohemian Rhapsody are also getting runs, but they can wait for Netflix.

It's a pickle since I want to see Roma, specially since I'm in Mexico, but it's also on Netflix so it doesn't need to be a priority. So I could watch one of the other 3 instead.

Saw it tonight. It wasn't terrible but it was definitely not "awesome".

LEGO Batman is still the best one, mainly because of Michael Cera's Robin.

I really enjoyed the first one and the Batman movie, but Ninjago to a lesser extend, and probably enjoy this one too. But I wont watch it in cinemas, since they only do showings which are dubbed in my language.

I know I aint the target audience, but atleast do two showings then. Maybe they do release the english version like with Spider-Verse, otherwise I dont see myself contributing to the box office

I honestly didn't even enjoy the first one that much, and I LOVE Legos. I just thought it was OK, and I haven't seen the others. Smug Batman was the best part of it though. Smug Batman was AWESOME.
