AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM Is Looking At A Disappointing $30 Million Opening Weekend

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrived in theaters on Friday, and the updated box office estimates point to James Wan's sequel having one of the worst opening weekends in the DC Extended Universe.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the final movie in the current "DCEU" era, and based on updated box office projections, it might also end up being one of the least profitable of the entire franchise.

Per Deadline, James Wan's sequel projected to earn a 3-day total of $30 million over the course of its opening weekend. While this could fluctuate slightly, it would have to take in $33M+ to pass Birds of Prey and stay out of the bottom five (Birds of Prey, $33 million; Shazam! Fury of the Gods, $30.1 million; The Suicide Squad, $26.2 million; Blue Beetle, $25 million, and Wonder Woman 1984 $16.7 million).

Long-range box office tracking was never very strong, but negative reviews probably didn't help matters. Aquaman 2 is currently sitting at 37% on Rotten Tomatoes, although it does have a better Audience Score of 77%.

It's too early to write the movie off as a flop, but even so, this is just the latest in a pretty long run of underperforming comic book movies. Is it time to admit that "superhero fatigue" has set in, or are audiences simply growing tired of sub-par movies?

"Having failed to defeat Aquaman the first time, Black Manta, still driven by the need to avenge his father’s death, will stop at nothing to take Aquaman down once and for all. This time Black Manta is more formidable than ever before, wielding the power of the mythic Black Trident, which unleashes an ancient and malevolent force. To defeat him, Aquaman will turn to his imprisoned brother Orm, the former King of Atlantis, to forge an unlikely alliance. Together, they must set aside their differences in order to protect their kingdom and save Aquaman’s family, and the world, from irreversible destruction.

All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, no, after w balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin."

That's a shame, was hoping it'd do financially better than The Marvels. I suppose at least from previous film to sequel the drop is still going to be lower than Captain Marvel to The Marvels though.

It's a shame as I think if the DCEU had kept going the Aquaman series had the most potential

Comicbook movie genre is on the ropes.

Only the special ones will be hits from now on.

@AmazingFILMporg - Ouch. Don't agree 100% but there is a good bit of validity in your point. Covid has had a negative effect that has not gone away. A lot of people have nice home setups now and are mostly lost for good. And as you alluded if it ain't special folks will not get out of the house and just wait for it to stream. That's way different from the way things used to be.

@JDL -

Yup. COVID made people wait for streaming.

Streaming has made the average viewer wait it out. Why spend 50+ bucks taking the kids out when you could watch it at home in less than 2 months?😬

Streaming is the death of theaters.

@AmazingFILMporg - yep. It was coming anyway, but covid sped the whole process up in a way that the studios are having a very hard time dealing with.

Theaters have no other franchise to rely on going forward. In the good ole days cbm's were making an average of 800 million a piece! Marvel studios is the biggest studio of all time in terms of boxoffice and theaters benefited off of that. Now that the genre is running on fumes what other franchise is out there to take it's place?

All this year produced was Barbie and Mario as huge hits. That's not sustainable for theaters.

Even when cbm's were firing on all cylinders theaters were in trouble but now?

They're on their death bed😬

@Izaizaiza @AmazingFILMporg @JDL - Yepper. I'm exactly one of those people. Before COVID my wife and I would go to the movies practically weekly (had the AMC Stubbs membership and everything). Our closest theater is like 5 minutes away inside of a big mall, so my in-laws would take our oldest kid (3 or 4 at the time) shopping during that so that my wife and I could watch whatever we wanted. Then we had our second kid in August 2019 and haven't been to the theaters since. I'm sure we'll get there eventually (we finally all got on a plane last month), but to be honest we have a full-on movie room with a 75" TV (working on a projector), 9.2 Dolby Atmos surround sound, stadium seating, leather recliners, old timey popcorn maker, etc. Not a whole lot of incentive to go to the theaters right now. We can watch whatever we want and if the kids aren't interested they can just watch their iPads or something. Saves money, more convenient, more comfortable. Plus I can drink as much as I want and don't have to worry about driving home.

So like you guys said, I just had to develop the patience to wait for streaming or disc, but I'm there now and I don't mind it at all. And if I really want to know what happens in a particular movie and all the spoilers I know where to go (hint: it's here 😉).

@AmazingFILMporg - Yeah, before covet hit, a buddy of mine and I had a bet on what percentage of theaters would still be opened in 5 years. Home theaters are just too good, and streaming makes going to the theater unnecessary

@AmazingFILMporg - Too much market saturation with low quality products/characters that chased away the loyal fans. It happens to every genre though, the big execs are never satisfied until they milk every drop from their precious cash cows. Either way, nothing to worry about in bigger scheme of things. I'm celebrating my birthday today and looking forward to 2024 just around the corner ☺️

@Izaizaiza - Yeah I like it. It was one of the selling points for the house for me. I've been slowly adding to it over the years (got a dedicated beer mini fridge and everything). I added 2 ceiling speakers a couple of years ago when I upgraded to Atmos, but MAN that was a pain. Took me about 2 weeks over Christmas break (we got a good deal on the speakers at Christmas time). Mounting the speakers wasn't too bad but running the speaker wire practically killed me because I had to run it through the crawl space above the room which meant I had to crawl across the ceiling joists on my stomach (ended up with bruises all over my chest) and then run the wires down throng the wall and get them to come out through this outlet down near the carpet. Unfortunately there were 2x4s running horizontally across the wall inside the wall that had holes drilled in the exactly wide enough for the existing speaker wire so the new wires wouldn't fit. Ultimately I got them through but it involved lube. A lot of lube. Of every kind that I had on hand. But damn, it was worth it when I hear helicopters and spaceships flying overhead.

Now if I can just find a good deal on a 4K projector... 😉.

Y'all are all absolutely right. Theaters have been on life support for a while, but I hope it stays.

People are becoming lazy enough that we need to leave the comforts of our homes.

Also, call it nostalgia or whatever, but home setups can't mimic that feeling and excitement of a crowd. I know theaters are expensive, but in my opinion, the experience is worth it. I'll tell you what's not: streaming.

But the numbers are the numbers. Theaters won't completely go away but I see them significantly reducing and only being in major cities

@MyCoolYoung - Yeah man, I love theaters too! And I certainly still go for select films. Just saw Godzilla minus one a couple of weeks ago in the theater. Love taking the kids too.
