Louis Leterrier says he is in the running to direct The Avengers.

During an interview with Ain't It Cool News Louis Leterrier restated his desire to direct The Avengers for Marvel.

"I am on the shortlist, but I'm at the bottom of the shortlist, I'm sure. (Laughs) I don't know who the other guys are, but I have a great relationship with [Marvel], and I've been very vocal to them and everyone else that I am the one to direct it. I loved my time at Marvel. I loved those guys. They're fantastic. Kevin is such a passionate boss; he gets his hands dirty. It's a universe I want to keep exploring. I was frustrated with [THE INCREDIBLE HULK]. It was like, "That's it? Only one superhero? Can I do more???" We'll see. Time will tell."

Seeing as how Jon Favreau has stated that he would not direct The Avengers, I would have to say Letterier is the next best choice.

I love what he did with Incredible Hulk, but I'd still rather see Favs take the helm on Avengers.

The Incredible Hulk was great, so I think he would be pretty good for Avengers. Between him and Favreau, I would go for Favreau because i think the Ironman movies are closer to the tone I would like to see for Avengers, but Favreau has already said he won't direct it, so Letterier might be the best choice. And Johnston? Uh... Yeah... No.

Sorry, nope. At least, not yet, I'll see how he does with Clash. TIH was very good, it brought the action but very little else. After watching it again recently there just isn't that much to it. I want The Avengers in the hands of someone who has done ensemble movies before and has experience at juggling a few different characters well.
SciFiNut
SciFiNut - 3/20/2010, 7:28 PM
Yeah - Lets go with LL! His sense of the super soldier syrum in TIH and his style of action direction for large set pieces would be an excellent fit!

If the Clash of the Titans movie does well then I'm sold on him directing the Avengers.

Hopefully he gets the job, he understands the Marvel universe very well. I hope Marvel lets him go with his idea of the Avengers being told in four different parts.

Ror: What decent ensemble movies have we had recently besides the Ocean movies?

If you really think about it, Marvel is going through all this trouble to set up The Avengers, and yet Caps movie is going to include The Invaders.

Wouldn't you think the Invaders would take just as much set up work as The Avengers?

Clash of the Titans looks really bad, IMHO. Hulk had poor pacing, hope they find someone else.

I would like to see it especially if Clash is well done.

Nice find Hawks

Heck Yeah! He should be the director.
He could direct Chris Evans,RDJ,Chris Hemsworth,Ed Norton,SLJ,Patrick Wilson,Evangeline Lily,ScarJo,and Jensen Ackles....

Hawks, I don't even rate the Ocean's movies! LOTR, X-Men films(despite people moaning about Douchclops lack of screen time), Serenity, Star Trek..there are lots of em. The Invaders will be a part of Cap but they won't be the focus, The Avengers will be about the Avengers! I just don't think LL is a very drama friendly director. People go crazy about his 30 minute cartoon scrap at the end of TIH but what real drama exists in that movie? Say what you want about Ang Lee's Hulk, but he invested something emotionally in his characters.

"What decent ensemble movies have we had recently besides the Ocean movies?"

Inglorious Basterds. Finally saw that one. Great f*cking movie. Not suggesting Quentin to be the director at all, though.

Leterrier would be a decent choice for Avengers, but I feel that there's someone better out there though. Favs would have been ideal, but he's only exec. producing.

Truly, I don't know who could direct Avengers. The guy needs to be able to do action, humor, and drama/depth all very well. Leterrier has the first 2 qualities locked up, no problem. But the 3rd, not as much, but I'd give him a chance.

Ror: Okay, Okay, I had a brain fart, couldn't think of one of them a minute ago and now I'm reading your post saying duh, duh, duh.

I like Ang Lee's Hulk outside of the fact that it was long winded. It gets a bad rap.

Now you realy hit the mark with Star Trek. Abrams would be awesome for The Avengers.

With Farv as a producer I would be willing to let LL direct it, just as I am willing to allow Nolan to produce the next Superman.

incredible hulk wasnt too bad but i really do not want him to direct the avengers unless... him jon favreau kenneth branagh and (hopefully a replacement for) joe johnston team up to direct it. eh? wat do yall think?

"What decent ensemble movies have we had recently besides the Ocean movies?"

Star Trek
But that is too easy. The model and formula has already been thoroughly explored.

The Lord of the Rings
A personal choice for Ror. ;P

Coming soon...

Predators
A Team
I think this will be better than anticipated. A new fan fave. (Money was just slapped down on the table)
The Expendables
Unfortunately, I have the opposite intuition for this one. This one will blow. Stallone may retire from this one.

If I couldnt have Abrams directing it then Leterrier is definitely my top choice. Great find HAWKS! :)

On a seperate note, I just watched Push for the first time on blu-ray and am now even more convinced that Chis Evans is THE best choice for Captain America!

scale wise it looks like leterrier is the best choice. he makes big movies seem big. i like how favrou(sp) made ironman well rounded and he did a great job but in the end I think it didnt feel as big. Its really so close though that it doesnt really matter. I think it would be great if this was a team effort

With a well balanced script, he could pull off a good "Avengers".

Thanks, hawksblueyes.

THE CONSORTIUM sounds the best but they'll probably be
producing anyway, I mean Branagh too along with Favs
Executive Producing!

But I'm all for Leterrier directing the Avengers per say
and a consortium overseeing it all! MARVEL is hitting on
all cylinders right now and I have faith that all the
solo movies will be on target leading up to a blow-yer-
mind-out AVENGERS! MAKE MINE MARVEL FOREVER!!! ;D;D:D

LightningArmour - 3/20/2010, 9:38 PM
Uh, let's get one thing straight.
Letterier is THE best choice to direct the Avengers.
No "next to" bullshit. [frick] John Favreau. I mean, yes, Iron Man was alright, and Iron Man 2 does look really good, but [frick] that guy. He doesn't give a [frick] about anything aside from Iron Man, so Avengers would be nothing but Iron Man in the spotlight with everyone else pulling the rear. Letterier is obviously a huge comic fan, by his own admittance, and he would do a much better job of directing an Avengers movie where everyone shares the spotlight, and no one gets shafted.

And besides, if Favreau directed it it would just end up being another comedy movie pretending to be a superhero movie, and no one wants that.
Upupandaway
Upupandaway - 3/20/2010, 9:44 PM
@Ror: Exactly, TIH did what it needed to do, but not much else. Hulk smashed and all was well. I actually appreciated Ang Lee's vision (I.E. He made some scene transitions and such seem like comic panels.), but not the execution. I do have to agree with @Multi though. Having that creative conglomerate, including actors who have experience playing the superhero roles, will give the director little room to do something too far out of left field. As long as Leterrier doesn't carry a price tag that will reduce any production values, sign him up.
