Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. TV Pilot Gets Character Details

When Marvel Studios first announced a Joss Whedon-helmed ABC television series based on S.H.I.E.L.D., the Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division that's well-established in the Marvel cinematic universe, shooting for the pilot was said to “start immediately.” And showcasing all new characters that Whedon confirmed last month, a casting call via E!Online has revealed details for original Agents.

Agent Grant Ward is described as “deadly, precise and cool under fire and just doesn't play well with others due to his not-so-great people skills. He's volatile, but a decent guy with morals whose charm will eventually come through.” The description for Agent Althea Rice (a.k.a. "The Cavalry") says she's “Soulful and quiet, an ace pilot, weapons expert and soldier who is damaged from her combat experience and has gone beyond the call of duty.”

And last but not least, there's a duo known as Agent Leo Fitz and Agent Jemma Simmons, AKA “Fitz-Simmons.” The two apparently spend most of their time together, like a “brother and sister who always bicker and annoy one another. They came up together and are masters in their fields: Fitz is good with weapons and gadgets while Simmons is into science. Yes, they are huge nerds (and also attractive).”

UPDATE: Thanks to a heads from one of our CBM readers, PantherX, TVLine has details for one more character by the name of Skye. According to the description, “this late-20s woman sounds like a dream: fun, smart, caring and confident – with an ability to get the upper hand by using her wit and charm.”

Last month, Joss Whedon said the series will be adjacent to the Marvel cinematic universe, but is structured so that it deals with agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. who are “the humans in a superhero world and how they deal with that and how it makes them vulnerable.” Whedon penned the pilot with his brother, Jed Whedon & his wife Maurissa Tancharoen. And the trio will also executive produce the pilot with Jeffrey Bell and Marvel TV’s Jeph Loeb.

In addition to “Marvel's The Avengers” sequel on May 1, 2015, Marvel Studios will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including “Iron Man 3” on May 3, 2013; “Thor: The Dark World ” on November 8, 2013; “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” on April 4, 2014; and “Guardians of the Galaxy” on August 1, 2014.

Not too sure about this S.H.I.E.L.D. Series but if Whedon is writing it, I will definitely give it a chance.

Don't know about the other two but, Agent Grant Ward sounds like Tony Stark and Agent Althea Rice(a stereotypical African-American character name if ever I heard one)sounds like The Black Widow.

Yeah, I have to agree; not really excited for this, but I'll check it out when it comes out. If filming is starting immediately, and it's already picked up does that mean we could get it as early as next May?

Character descriptions hardly ever sound good.

It sounds like a character you've seen before, but it's all in how they are adapted.

I mean, Grant Ward sounds a lot like Hawkeye, which is a great thing IMO. Well, I'll be keeping my eye on this.

Description: meh.
Execution (I'm asuming based on Whedon's track record): drool...

Damn, I read Syke as "Spike" and my heart soared briefly at the thought of a Buffy/Marvel crossover.

Rumor has it, the Avengers cast is contracted to "stop by" every so often, so we will see Iron Man, Cap, Thor, Hulk, Hawk, Widow, Fury and Hill every so often in the series.

So I get why Nick Fury, Mira Hill, & Dum Dum Dugan are not in the series. The thing I don't understand is why they are not using Clay Quartermain, Jasper Sitwell, Jimmy Woo, or Sharron Carter in this series. Shield has been around a long time and these are all agents that could be used.

Honestly, nothing would give more credibility or all around awesomeness to this show than a series premiere or season one finale cameo of Samuel L.

Hell, even voice-overs, cheap-ass phone-call scenes's would do a lot.

This show almost HAS to do that otherwise some people will refuse to consider it "canon"

@nuclearpriest, while that may be an African-American character, Althea is actually a common British name.

I'll check out the pilot, but I'm not sure if this series will be able to match the awesomeness of the MCU movies. Also, I'm interested in seeing who the villains will be.

I think the not using established characters may have something to do with Marvel TV not wanting to tie any characters to lead roles that the film division may want to use later on.

You have two separate divisions developing projects from the same pool of characters and no one wants to step on anyone's toes.

Characters like Carol Danvers, Clay Quartermain, Sharon Carter or Jasper Sitwell are pretty important in the comics and Feige may want them to have a big presence in their films at some point. That could be a conflict if they're leads in a TV show.

I think it's better to have original characters as the leads and the established comic book characters as recurring or guest stars. That gives you a lot more storytelling freedom. If you're sharing characters with the movies, you're limited in what you can do with them con the show. But if you're dealing with new characters who won't be in the films, the possibilities are endless.

So what was the point of Item 47 if we don't see those two characters?

Um....how is this a Marvel version of Serenity/Firefly when the latter was about anti-establishment rebel outcasts who lived far away from the state and the former is supposed to be about a government agency?

I hope they still got an open casting call, cuz I wanna try out, ESPECIALLY if they add Clay Quartermain.

Sounds OK I guess. These aren't gonna be the only characters in the show guys. Agents from the comics might appear later. One thing I'm most intrigued about is the super villains they are going to use.
