3D conversions are never perfect. Sometimes, they're very good and other times they're downright awful. It's hard to imagine that anyone can't slot at least a few films into either category. When I saw Marvel's The Avengers (a.k.a. Marvel Avengers Assemble) two weeks ago, it was in 2D, and apart from a few scenes which appeared to be specifically catered for 3D effects, I didn't feel as if I had missed anything at all. The fact is, The Avengers is a visual spectacle, and regardless of the format you end up watching it in (excluding the appalling quality of illegal bootlegs of course) you're sure to be left feeling completely and utterly blown away by the time the credits roll.

However, now that I've seen both versions, it's hard to not recommend seeing the superhero ensemble in 3D. We already know that Joss Whedon directed the film with the intention of it eventually being converted (unlike most studios that end up doing a quick post-conversion when they realise they can make a few more bucks from sticking the word "3D" after the title) and it shows. For a good chunk of the film, the 3D is unnecessary to some extent. When Earth's Mightiest Heroes are standing around talking, there's no real sense of depth and it makes you wonder whether they just decided to put less effort into adding any sort of immersion into those scenes. However, this is really only a very minor complaint as the majority of the film ends up looking downright fantastic in three dimensions and even those mentioned above still look pretty damn good overall!

A fair few scenes were clearly filmed in a way which would eventually result in various objects pointing out at you from the screen (Black Widow's gun and Hawkeye's arrows for example) and these make for a fair few of the most memorable moments. A viscous confrontation between Black Widow and Loki is made all the more effective when his spittle can clearly be seen landing on the glass between them, something which was lost in the 2D version of the film. Just about all of the action scenes benefit from the 3D effects, but none more so than the final battle in New York. As the Leviathan makes its way through the city, you may even experience a little bit of vertigo as it quickly becomes such a breathtaking experience.

Regardless of whether or not you decide to see The Avengers in 3D, it's still a five star film. Ultimately, it's hard to completely recommend one over the other, although I would definitely pay a few extra bucks for a 3D ticket if you want the best experience possible. There are a fair few dark scenes in the movie, but the 3D doesn't negatively impact these in the least. As for IMAX, there's absolutely no doubt about it: if possible, see the film in that format! IMAX films do look best when, you know, they're actually filmed with IMAX cameras, but this still looks spectacular. They've done a fantastic job of converting The Avengers for the larger screen size and with the 3D thrown in, there's no doubt that this makes for THE ultimate experience. As I said, IMAX 3D (or at least 3D) is the what I would most recommend seeing, although those of you who hate the format will still enjoy the 2D version.

Thanks Josh. I was just contemplating if I was going to see this in 3D with my brother because we wanted the limited edition glasses. Looks like 2D will be just fine.

saw it in 2D since I heard this was converted and 3D does nothing to improve the film and its experience

The problem with most 3D films is not the film itself but theaters not using proper lighting.

Still I always opt for 3D, I just go to theaters that aren't penny pinching

anyway i saw the movie in 2D and its the best way to watch The Avenger imo. 3D is gimmick and annoying

Well, I was wanting to see it in 2D. But they didn't have any 2D showings available when I got my tickets for the midnight premiere, so I'm seeing it in 3D. But, hopefully we'll be getting them sweet Avengers themed 3D glasses.

Yeah, I agree. I think These Imax conversion things are a fraud just like 3D conversions. if you didn't shoot it that way, I don't want to see it that way. These people are ridiculous and complain about Piracy.

Seen it in both and I thought 3d was great but a bit dark at times. And the reveal at the mid credit sceen was so much clearer in 2d

went to see the avengers and man it is a stinker in terms of writing and editing. once you get halfway through the action takes over but the first hour is a jumbled mess of pointless dialog.

@Griffy, I don't condone that. I saw it myself online but I'm def going to see it in theaters and buy it later on DVD/Blu-Ray. It's only right and nothing is better than an in theater experience.

There was never any question where i would be seeing this film. IMAX theaters have a MUCH bigger screen & a MUCH better sound system...and since there is no 2D IMAX option, my choice was made for me! Glad to hear the 3D holds up well...

...I CAN'T WAIT FOR MUCH LONGER!!!!!!

I saw it first in 2D and then today again in 3D. Honestly aside from a couple of gimmick shots as you mention above it didn't make that much difference really, my advice is save a few quid and see it in 2D.

@TheGambitFreak and Otaku: This movie must be seen on the big screen. Trust me, you will be happy.

I am definitely going to see it again.

2D. The only films I plan on seeing in 3D this year are Men In Black 3, Prometheus, and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Quite a few reviews have praised the 3-D conversion, actually, saying it adds more awe to the final battle and never is annoying or badly done. They also point out that the film's many indoor scenes don't benefit much from it, and so you're not going to miss much seeing it in 2-D, but that it's not wasted money or a detriment either.
Alexandre
Alexandre - 4/28/2012, 1:34 PM
it sucks, they should have shot it in 3d. shit they had the budget to do it. what ever. watch it in 2d. these 3d post converted films are always a scam. and yeah i agree with @DoctorSnide. its a 4 star film at most but damn does it have a classic feel to it.
MarkCassidy
MarkCassidy - 4/28/2012, 1:34 PM
Yeah still love the hell out of it. It's funny though, this time around a few of the minor things that annoyed me a bit didn't, but I found a few new things that bothered me! Honestly, as great as it is if you dissect the plot..kinda doesn't make a lot of sense!
Ortonito
Ortonito - 4/28/2012, 1:35 PM
Saw it in 3 dimensions as I didn't have the option. Hardly noticed it, which is a good thing, certainly wasn't obtrusive. Going back to watch it again in 2D this time.

Joss Whedon nailed it!

When you hire the ultimate comic geek to direct, you get the ultimate comic book film!
