DC Entertainment's R-rated animated feature, Batman: The Killing Joke, is set to be released on Blu-ray and DVD this August, and below you'll find the first official synopsis along with a new image of Batgirl, who will be voiced by Tara Strong.

This character's treatment in Alan Moore's original graphic novel has been the focus of a lot of controversy, as she is only introduced a couple of panels before being shot, stripped naked and photographed by The Joker. The upcoming animated adaptation has addressed this issue by adding in a new Batgirl-centric sequence from Flashpoint Paradox director Jay Oliva.

What does it take for a person to snap? How much despair for a mind to fracture? These are the twisted questions that The Joker has set out to answer, to show Gotham that even an ordinary man like Commissioner Gordon is only one bad day away from sheer insanity. Based on the acclaimed DC Comics graphic novel, witness a journey into the dark psyche of the Clown Prince of Crime. Follow his humble beginnings as a struggling comic to his fateful encounter with the Dark Knight that changed everything. Fueled by the return of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as The Joker, witness the birth of a super villain, the fortitude of a hero and the punch line that will leave you speechless.

Batman: The Killing Joke will be released on Digital HD on July 26, 2016, and Blu-ray and DVD on August 2, 2016.

Its just a shame that its an adaptation of a comic that is popular enough that virtually everyone knows the story.

The main aspects; The attack on Barbara, the origin of the Joker, the final confrontation

Are all memorable and embedded in most of the fan base. So pretty much all the aspects that people would want to watch this movie for, are aspects they already know and given the art style is not that different and its unlikely to vary much from the source material - I'm not expecting this film to offer much.

Honestly would prefer them to have done an original story or a different version of the Killing Joke concept given a massive amount of the comic's storyline was just unnecessary such as the torturing of Gordon - given Batman was already going after Joker before he kidnapped Gordon - and it didn't really work in favor of the Joker's "One bad day" ideology.

@Scarilian - I reckon the average movie goer would certainly enjoy it, but it not someone deeply invested in the source material, which are the people who are going to see it / buy it.. so it's a bit of a catch 22 in that respect

@MrMurdock - Possibly, though i dont think the average movie goer would sit through some of the more disturbing aspects for such simple message; "One bad day can change everything"

Honestly i could see someone doing a fan-cut of this movie where they make it focused on the Joker and cut out a majority of the rest of the storyline. They've even chose to pad this story with Barbara Gordon getting more focus - which i can understand, but i would have preferred they just cut that aspect completely.

I saw on amazon it's not R-rated in the UK and neither is Batman V Superman. Neither seem to be a 15 either. Killing Joke has been rated 13+. I'm not sure whether that says more about the film or this country haha. Either way looking forward to seeing it :)

@BeyondtheFuture - Not sure what Amazon you are looking at, but its 'TBC' for the age rating for both Batman V Superman and The Killing Joke in the UK...

Hope they would improve the animation of this film. A great story like this cant be butchered just like that.

I was super excited for it until I saw the trailers; the animation is horrendous, not acceptable movie quality. Even the original Batman Animated Series looked better.

@Demonluv - It could simply be how the trailer was edited, I'm sure the final product will be much smoother. It's got Bruce Timm, and he's definitely a perfectionist.

To be fair though, The Animated Series is hard to beat. That was some old school animation at it's finest.
