Batman Begins – Keeping it Real

The Chris Nolan-directed revival of the Batman movie franchise will aim for a gritty, real-world feel, according to producer Chuck Roven.

Expect Batman Begins to portray how the Darknight Detective would operate if he were in the real world. So says producer Chuck Roven who told CHUD “[t]he whole concept of this Batman is that it will be different from the other Batmans because it's going to be much more reality-based in that everything that the character does, a living person today could evolve to do.”

He added: “Everything - all of the equipment - the plane, the car, the cape, everything has a real, scientific, practical reason for being and using and you're going, 'Gee, that could happen today.'”

Roven also confirmed that Christian Bale is signed on to return as Bruce Wayne/Batman in any sequels. Dave Goyer’s script has not yet been finalized so it’s unclear which characters would stick around for more movies, he said.

How about bringing back the Joker? “You have to see this one to see what possibly will happen in the next one,” Roven said. “All of the seeds - if there will be a next one - are there even though the exact story for the next one hasn't been worked out. But, we're doing Batman Begins, so you can imagine that you find out the history of the character, why Bruce Wayne went on the journey to become this character of Batman - how he got there - and also the other characters within this story. They embark on their journeys and maybe become some of his biggest foes.”

Meanwhile, the 30-year-old Bale is reportedly dedicating his performance in the film to his father David who died at age 62 of a brain tumor just before last Christmas.
