BATMAN AND ROBIN Star George Clooney Elaborates On His Feelings Towards The DC Film: "I Was Terrible In It"

George Clooney frequently talks about his role as the Dark Knight in Batman and Robin, but the actor has now elaborated on how he feels about being able to discuss his role in the disaster-piece so openly!

George Clooney was recently the subject of a GQ feature, and along with recalling the time he gifted $14 million to his friends in fourteen duffel bags, the actor has also reflected on his much-maligned performance in 1997's Batman and Robin.

Widely considered the worst version of the Dark Knight, Clooney has never shied away from acknowledging his failings. But is it fair to slate the DC Comics adaptation when so many worked so hard on making it?

"The only way you can honestly talk about things is to include yourself and your shortcomings in those things," Clooney admitted. "Like, when I say Batman & Robin's a terrible film, I always go, 'I was terrible in it.'"

The actor believes that being #1 on the call sheet means he has the ability to open up about the film's failing as much of the blame ultimately lies at his feet.

"But also because then it allows you the ability to say, 'Having said I sucked in it, I can also say that none of these other elements worked, either.' You know? Lines like "Freeze, Freeze!'"

While Batman and Robin is frequently hated on by fans, many have praised it for embracing the campiness of the 1960s TV series and making a film Batman movie that was suitable for younger audiences. In terms of toy sales, it was also a hit for Warner Bros. in the late 1990s.

Nevertheless, this film had an amazing production design and cast.

@AtakanKaratas - What do you mean amazing cast? They all sucked in their roles? This article is about Clooney admitting he sucked. How was the cast amazing?

@Nightwing1015 - I think Atakan means it was like an All-Star Game, filled with a bunch of actors who had a lot of good performances and success elsewhere but the just half-assed this movie.

@Rosraf - Yeah fair enough I guess that's true. However, I don't even love the production design either. Burton's films has perfect noir design. The final 2 films just shoved a bunch of neon in and ruined the look and feel of Gotham. Not to mention the production design was basically only motivated by what could be made into toys, not what actually looked good. If they want to do campy colourful Batman they should've just gone the 60s route.

@Nightwing1015 - Yeah, it was like Joel Schumacher somehow wound up at a rave in the mid-90's (totally sober) and trued to adapt the aesthetic.

@Nightwing1015 - I tend to agree. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin looked relatively cheap in their production design. Apparently the idea was to mimic the aesthetic of the 60s show to purposely make it look like relatively cheap soundstage sets. I think the 60s show did a better job of it personally.

@Rosraf - yeah but they were all miscast.

I had a webpage at the time called Patrick's Batman and Robin page which was doing decent hits which I think was around 3000 per day. Warner Bros. was using flash on their Batman and Robin webpage and a lot of people were having problems with the and therefore were gravitating to my site. Warner Bros. ended up sending me a cease and desist one week before the movie debuted citing unfair competition. It's a good thing too because I would've roasted this movie mercilessly. I was optimistic up until the opening credits But the straw that broke the camels back was when Batman pulled out the bat credit card. My girlfriend looked over at me for my reaction and I couldn't even look over I was so ashamed LOL

@patmanqc - You mean in 1997 you had a Batman & Robin fanpage AND a girlfriend?

if only instead of a straight batman movie, they had made a parody it would be one of the best

@Superheromoviefan - It was a parody. That's part of the problem imo. Joel Schumacher was quoted as saying about the movie "remember everyone, this is a CARTOON."

Well, how humble of him. Because really, it didn't matter if Clooney was the best Batman ever. The movie itself was just so piss poor.

There's a scene in Batman & Robin, that explains Batman's no-kill rule, and what drives him as a character, perfectly.

Clooney's a fine dramatic actor, but I feel like he really shines in off-beat comedies. Like he'd work in a Coen Bros. esque Batman film where Bruce is clearly a bit unhinged.
He's probably the most like Batman out of any of the actors cast though, between his playboy lifestyle and the satellites he owns that monitor African warlords.

@tmp3 - ''the satellites he owns that monitor African warlords''

Never heard about those, but for some reason they feel like a very George Clooney thing to do (Brad Pitt could probably have one too)

In my opinion everything about the movie was terrible, but that's also what makes it so damn enjoyable. Batnipples, bat credit cards, and the endless Mr. Freeze puns are so stupid I considered this movie gold
