BOX OFFICE: Warner Bros. "Annoyed" With TDKR Prologue Boost For MISSION IMPOSSIBLE

The studio is said to be annoyed over missing out on the opportunity to attach TDKR prologue to Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, which has underperformed after Ghost Protocol was given a huge boost by the six minutes of footage.

Deadline report that Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is expected to take considerably less than the previous instalment in the franchise (Sherlock Holmes made $62.3M vs. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' expected $40M). Warner Bros. has responded to these figures, pointing out that the last one actually opened up during Christmas when children were out of school and are confident that they'll be able to make up the difference in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol has exceeded expectations, helped by the higher IMAX ticket prices and The Dark Knight Rises prologue. However, Warner Bros. are extremely annoyed with what a boost the six minutes of footage has given to Paramount as they were unable to book Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows into IMAX. This resulted in them obviously being unable to pair the prologue with their own product, missing out on an easy and free marketing opportunity. However, they have of course attached a new trailer to Holmes, possibly explaining their reluctance to release it online in a bid to earn some extra money from the hype surrounding the movie and from those unable to make it to one of the limited number of 70MM screens.

Lol, they're annoyed? They shouldn't have attached the prologue to a none WB project in the first place, geniuses.

I do have something to say. I can´t believe how people who are not into movies and are not fans themselves, can be executives of Warner Bros. Any of us would have put the prologue of TDKR whith Sherlock Holmes.

I got the trailer, not the prologue, it was ok, not mind blowing at all. Quake scene looked super fake and i couldn't understand a word Bane said. VERY surprisingly Anne Hathaway "cat voice" was pretty hot though

There's reason a it opened with MI4...Christopher Nolan. It is with his insistence that the prologue only open on 70mm prints of IMAX. They didn't have a choice really, Sherlock Holmes wasn't made for that format, MI4 was. Either way, it's creating a buzz and that what they all want in the end. I doubt WB is really annoyed with the Box Office, and more that they gave so much control to Chris Nolan. I have no doubt that the intended marketing effect is happening.

Hmmm...should I attach this prologue to a blockbuster or a movie starring Jude Law based on a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle? Don't get me wrong I understand the importance of a good date movie as much has the guy...but really...not a hard choice and Warner Bros knows it.

Alvin and the Chipmunks is mind-numbing bullshit, even by kids standards. "'Im the King of the World"? Really? A tired ass Titanic reference? It's the like the disaster movie series for children. They just cram a bunch of 90s slang and.. never mind. It pisses me off to even think about it.

No shit, Sherlock? Someone had to say it. :)

With or without the prologue, Sherlock Holmes was a piece of annoying shit and MI4 was suprisingly good.

They will make a billion dollars in ticket sales alone, what are they worried about? Add merchandising and dvd/blu ray sales and it will be more valuable than the Green Lantern/Ghost Rider/Daredevil combined.

If it was such a boost then they did they only put it in a couple of theaters?

TDKR prologue wasn't even worth it. Just looked like a generic action movie prologue before they roll the opening credits. A waste of money IMO

Shut up WB. Sherlock Holmes 2 is "underperforming" because it's a boring piece of work.

MI:GP on the other hand, now that's a movie. WB, don't worry, you'll collect when July 20, 2012 comes around ;)

Grif, I agree. Although I loved the Waterboy. Also, I don't see why a trailer for a shit movie would make another film do better at the box office. Of course people probably didn't know it was shit then.

By the way, just because you don't like The Dark Knight Rises, doesn't mean you have to troll on here. Constructive criticism is one thing, but just typing "shit movie/trailer/prologue" is another thing entirely. It is not going to change anyone's opinion of the film; all it will do is piss them off.

Instead of being annoyed, Warner should be thankful that this film will make them billions.

WB has a history of not handling its properties wisely. Blade, then X-men...and WB gives us Catwoman. Just more of the same.

I rather enjoyed Game of Shadows. Jared Harris ruled as the Napoleon of Crime. I will see it for a second time this week. Now what DID suck was that my theatre just had TDKR teaser! There was a loud dissapointed murmer from the crowd.

Ghost Protocol was a really good film. Probably the best action film of the year. It was so much fun. Warner Bros. was the one who decided to attach TDKR prologue to Ghost Protocol. Sure, Paramount must be happy, but it's Warner's fault. I mean what did they expect? Unbelievable.

Wow, isn't that terrible, not enough people came and paid to go see a trailer... oh wait. People should go to the theater to see a MOVIE, when studios find that out we'll start getting better movies.

Glad to hear that Ghost Protocol was fun. But I'm waiting for the DVD.

The prologue is only playing in 42 I-Max screens with MI4 in North America so they need to stop pretending that it's boosting the box office by much if at all. The response to the movie is enough to sell it even without TDKR

I'm glad that TDKR prologue was on there. I wouldn't want them to have to put it in regular theaters with "Sherlock Holmes". I'd hate to have eight minutes of mine thrown down the drain before I watch an awesome film.
