How the Dark Knight could've panned out

A discussion on how Nolan's Batman sequel could have been projected differently, and in reality...what the future holds for Batman 3.

I continue to this day, to skip to my favorite bits of "The Dark Knight" (E.g. The transformation and reveal of Dent as Two-Face, The Joker interrogation scene at the MCU, and more). And every now and then, I'll watch the film in its entirety, appreciating every heart breaking, body pounding moment. There's something very different and intriguing every time I watch the film, and it reminds me (dare I say it), of the first time "Spider-Man" (2002) came out. I really couldn't stop watching it, and not for one second did it become boring.

Recently whilse casting my mind back to the original Batman movies, and of course Nolan's first, "Batman Begins (2005)," I began to envision what could've unfolded if say...Ledger hadn't died? If Katie Holmes had stuck onto the role of Rachel Dawes? and if Dent had survived?

In fact, one of the key aspects of the Dark Knight that made me think "Awwww, but why not more Two-Face?" was Dent's demise. The CGI, was astounding as you'll all agree, and as a fan boy, that was very empowering to be able to finally say "Yep, Dent's not black, he's not half purple, and he looks [frick]ed up and burnt to hell, like he should be!" Nolan had managed to pinpoint the look to a tee, and actually make people feel his pain. If Dent had lived, however, would his madness have gotten worse? Or would he have started to become the white knight he once was...to only die in the third, becoming Harvey Dent once again? Who knows.

As for Joker, we all know it's in poor taste to try and reinterpret what Ledger did in a third Bat flick--nothing can replace that performance. But if Ledger hadn't passed? Would Joker have reappeared in the third? Or could we have seen a little a'la "Batman Returns" (1995) with the character returning in the moonlight like Catwoman at the end? I have always envisioned Joker locked away in a padded cell, as promised by Batman himself, and a psychiatrist named Harleen Quinzel slowly approaching the cell door. Something as small and as simple as that would have the fan boys squealing...like pigs! But with Christopher Nolan recently informing us that the third will close the doors, rather than expand on the universe, it seems unlikely to see any Easter eggs or twisted endings of any sort.

And for god's sake...Am I the only one who feels that Scarecrow/Dr. Crane needs a little more leg room? I love Joker, Two Face and Scarecrow equally, but if you're not going to kill off the character...don't waste his existence. Or at least promise us another appearance from Murphy in Batman 3. I've never felt more strongly that Cillian Murphy is Dr. Crane! Just as much as Heath as Joker, and Eckhart as Dent! So let's hope we get another fear toxin spraying, maggot crawling face invested appearance from Scarecrow.

Now that I've stopped ranting, I'm finally gonna say my opinion on what's being done with Batman 3...well nothing so far. My predictions are simply: Riddler will probably be the guy. No doubt, even if I didn't want him there, he's our next baddie. My idea for a story? That Batman continues to run from Gordon and the rest of Gotham, whilse Riddler offers the people a cure for the city? He persuades the public that he is the right man to capture the caped crusader, and that he just wants what the city wants: a peaceful life and no more "This city is messed up!" Although unknown to the people, Mr. Nigma is plotting something. I don't know what, but he's plotting something whilse still maintaining his innocent face to the city. Wayne obviously has to return to taking down Riddler and his thugs, whilse solving riddles which hint clues to Batsy what Nigma's actually planning. Batman (With Alfred's helps of course) will discover for himself that Riddler isn't so innocent after all.

Well you get the idea. Anyway, discuss my minions!

nice idea for the riddler. reminds of batman forever though. a successful businessman with nygma tech, and a green garbed lunatic at the same time. but still a cool idea. and after batman wins, the city starts trusting him again.

I don't think Scarecrow should return. He was an antagonist in Begins and even returned for TDK. I would just prefer knowing that Scarecrow is out there lurking in Gotham somewhere, rather than him returning again for another movie. His work has been done.

I think the reason for Scarecrow to be in TDK was to say how much Batman had become at what he was doing. That's just me.

I have a gut feeling that Two-Face isn't dead. I hope I'm right because I'd like to see more of the character. Then again, my gut's been wrong before.

Another thing I will say about Scarecrow is that I would've loved to see the Joker use a strain of Crane's fear toxin for his lethal laughing gas.

Black Mask.

he would be perfect for Batman 3.

@ morte

he's been around since the 80's. over 20 years. lol. its not like he was created last year. i'm just saying that Black Mask would fit Nolan's world, and the kind of stories he's been telling, perfectly. they wouldn't even need to change anything about his character. thats more than i can say about Riddler. they're going to have give Riddler a huge character make-over to make him fit Nolan's movies.

and Black Mask is easily as brutal as the Joker. People that don't know that need to go do some research, Black Mask has done some [frick]ed up shit, like making Catwoman's sister eat her dead husband's eye-ball. he's nuts!! and with the mob being as heavily involved in these movies as they are, there's no one better than Blask Mask. They could even make him have some kind of obsession with getting Batman's mask, since he has an obvious obsession with masks as it is. it could be great.

too many fans are asking for the Riddler, but then saying that they should change him into some psycho serial killer or something. if thats the case, then they want Zsasz, not the Riddler. i just don't get how people can say they want a certain character, but they want him to be changed into something completely different than what his character actually is.

no, you didn't say he should be a killer, and at least you want him to stay like he is in the comics. but i'd say about 90% of the Riddler supporters have said they want him to be turned into a serial killer type character. and to me, that just doesn't make sense. if they want the villain to be a psycho killer, then they don't want the Riddler. lol

Nolan has been able to successfully balance multiple villains before (Scarecrow, Ras AlGhul, Falcone; then Joker, Two-Face, Maroni, Lao), I don't see why he wouldn't be able to for B3.

I think Black Mask and the Riddler would work, but I do want to see Batman in some epic battle for his life.

p.s. Dent is dead, people. He lived long enough to see himself become the villain AND he died a hero. There is no more room for him in this series.

I ve been thinking and all I have to say is Daniel Tosh for The Riddler. Think about it, what other comedian can deliver the bitter sting of the riddle of life, the ultimate asshole, Daniel Tosh. It sounds crazy enough to work.

i'd prefer to see an updated/modernized/realistic Dr. Hugo Strange. on a slightly different note, i'm hoping the third installment will include the upgraded batcave - to include the eavesdropping technology that l. fox disliked. he said something like 'as long as this remains at wayne enterprises, i will not.' which doesn't rule out the possibility it could become an 'oracle-like' monitoring system stationed in the cave.

I've said it a few times, and I'll say it until Nolan announces what's going on.

The story needs to be a continuance of the first 2 films, which is that Bruce Wayne/Batman is trying to clean the streets of Gotham by taking it from the Mob and giving it back to the people. Now at this point, what do we know about the mob? We know that the original head, Falcone, is locked up in Arkham. We know that the next guy in line, Maroni, died in a car crash (2face told Gordon, unknown but must have for Gordon to tell Batman right?) Then we know that Gambol is dead, and he was a Leuitenant of sorts. Also, did "The Chechen" get killed by Joker, fed to the dogs? I think so. So the Mob is in shambles, no leader to run the biz. So what has to happen is either an out of towner of a seperate mob claims control, oooor the mastermnd behind the national scene(like in Casino) comes to town to lay the law. This is Black Mask with out a doubt. Now he plans to re-corrupt the town since there is new resolve around town following Dent's Death and the decimation of the mob. In order to do that he runs a smear campaign against the Mayor, and finds a way to push his candidate, Oswald Cobblepot, a rich corrupt man, who doesn't just smear the mayor, he smears Bruce Wayne for not taking action enough to help the city. So now Bruce Wayne is called into battle as well as Batman. And of course, two men of such high importance need some sort of muscle/protection. Enter Deadshot or Bane to not only protect, but also hunt down Batman so they can continue their plot without disturbance. This will become the ultimate finale of Bruce Wayne and Batman putting their names, lives, and legacies on the line for Gotham.

ADDITION TO PREVIOUS POST:

And we should not forget the number of cronies the were locked up in TDK. They're still in prison. Another indicator that some outsider mob force of a kind is going to come in. A random psycho will not do.

The Riddler would work to test the Batmans mortality/life on the line scenario. Im thinking a slow deadly toxin, want the antidote, then find it. Oh btw, you gotta deal with another problem, crime dont stop for Batman. I say a 2 villain team (talk amongst yourselves on who it should be) but the Riddler just makes life a biatch for the Batman. Maybe he never gets caught just " foiled again" and comes back later for another challenge.
