JOKER Confirmed To Have Wrapped Filming With 'Arkham Asylum' Tease

To commemorate the end of principal photography, Joker director Todd Phillips has released a new set photo seemingly teasing a familiar Serious House on Serious Earth...

In line with previous reports that filming wrapped for the auteur-driven standalone Joker film, director Todd Phillips has posted to his Instagram officially confirming that principal photography has ended. The post shows the director sitting in one of the grimey sets, with a sign reading "No Unsupervised Patients Allowed," apparently teasing the appearance of a mental hospital. Of course, the mental hospital heavily associated with both the Joker and Batman lore in general is the Elizabeth Arkham Asylum for the Criminally Insane, which houses the most dangerous and unhinged supervillains in Batman-themed media.

That’s a wrap on production. Thanks to the greatest crew NYC has to offer. It was a fun shoot— but we’re not there yet.

Joker will delve into the origins of the eponymous DC Comics supervillain, advertised as "The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale." It is currently slated for an October 4, 2019 release date.

The biggest reason i want this to work is Joaquin Phoenix. I have bo ill will towards him and i hope for nothing but the best for the man.

It seems weird, as this almost feels like it could be the finale to the TV show Gotham, but with a massive budget in comparison to the show.

@Knightrider -
I disagree with that. The big difference between Gotham and Joker is that Gotham is just a dark, campy network TV prequel in the same vain as Smallville, where the final episode is the hero putting on the costume and it's intentionally silly popcorn entertainment above all else.

Joker is being described as more of a grounded 1980s crime film in the style of Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, and The King of Comedy, where it attempts to be a gritty character study with actual themes. They even got Martin Scorsese to produce it, and they are going after big actors like Joaquin Phoenix and Robert DeNiro.

Joker clearly has bigger, more arthouse aspirations than Gotham does (which was always meant to be an over-the-top comic booky TV representation of the Batman mythos). The only real similarity is that it reimagines the years before Batman.

In a strange way I also kinda wish this was set in the TDK universe

@Knightrider - while that would be enjoyabale, I like the theory that in TDK, the joker is a former soldier resulting from PTSD, thus explaining his knowledge of firearms and such. But in the end, it’s all fan theories haha
