In its third weekend at the box office, Todd Phillips'
Joker is set to take in an estimated $30 million. If current estimates hold, it would be second to
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, Disney's live-action sequel to the story of iconic villain. The Angelina Jolie-led film is tracking towards a domestic weekend total of $38 million. In third place is Sony's
Zombieland: Double Tap with an estimated $27 million.
Joker continues to make noise at the box office with its domestic total climbing to $226 million in just 17 days. Worldwide, the film has grossed $619 million, surpassing fellow R-rated superhero flick
Logan.
Should
Joker surpass the the $700 million mark, it would become the fourth-highest grossing R-rated movie of all-time, ahead of the 2017 version of Stephen King's
It ($700.5M). It would also put
Joker within striking distance of becoming the No. 1 all-time highest-grossig R-rated movie, a spot that currently belongs to
Deadpool 2 ($785M).
Forbes
estimates that
Joker has the potential to become the first R-rated movie to top $800 million worldwide.
Director Todd Phillips “Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.
