Joker director Todd Phillips finally confirmed that he's working on a sequel to his controversial 2019 film back in June, and the movie - which now seems to be officially titled Joker: Folie à deux - has set a release date.
According to Deadline, Joker 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on October 4, 2024.
"Folie à Deux" loosely translates to "madness for two," a condition that is generally defined as an identical or similar mental disorder affecting two or more individuals, usually the members of a close family. The title reveal led to speculation that Harley Quinn may be involved, and sure enough, we'd later learn that none other than Lady Gaga had been cast in the role.
Details are few and far between, but the A Star Is Born actress obviously won't be playing the same version of Harley Margot Robbie portrayed in Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad.
The movie is being developed as a musical, but again, we still don't have a whole lot to go on.
Phillips has been co-writing the script with Scott Silver for quite a while, and is said to have handed it in to the studio earlier this summer. Although the filmmaker's initial Instagram post included a photo of Joaquin Phoenix reading said script, it seems the Academy Award-winner hasn't officially signed on to reprise the role of Arthur Fleck just yet.
Not too surprisingly, the studio is believed to have announced the movie's release date today in an attempt to "shift the conversation away from news that the studio has scrapped its $90 million-budgeted Batgirl."
Filming is reportedly set to commence this December.
UPDATE: The Wrap's report on the news mentions that "a lot of the sequel" takes place in Arkham Asylum.
