JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX Could Cost Warner Bros. As Much As $200M After Bombing At The Box Office

We knew Todd Phillips' Joker sequel would take a loss, but according to a new report, the highly divisive DC Comics sequel could wind up costing the studio as much as $200 million...

Following a massive second-weekend drop, Joker: Folie à Deux is now officially being labelled a box office flop by the trades. In fact, the latest figures suggest that Todd Phillips' sequel could wind up costing Warner Bros. as much as $200 million before all is said and done.

So far, the downbeat musical has grossed $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally, and Variety believes that the movie will likely stall at a lifetime gross of around $210M $215M worldwide. With a reported production budget of $200M (plus at least another $100 million to market and distribute), Joker 2 would need to gross $450 million just to break even.

It is worth noting that the studio is not ready to admit defeat just yet.

“Any estimates suggested by anonymous ‘insiders’ or ‘rival executives’ are grossly wrong and continues a trend where rumor is reported as fact,” a Warner Bros. spokesperson said in a statement. “The film continues to play in theatrical release, included with this week’s opening in China, and will continue to earn revenue throughout its home viewing and ancillary run.”

The studio does have the potential to recoup at least some of its costs when Folie à Deux lands on home entertainment platforms on October 29, but this has to be viewed as a disaster - especially when the first movie made over $1 billion worldwide and was just recently surpassed as the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time by Deadpool and Wolverine.

“If the filmmakers and studio were committed to making a sequel — and why wouldn’t they be after the first film made $1.08 billion — they faced a very difficult challenge of telling a new chapter that kept the audience engaged,” says analyst David A. Gross of movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

“The first Joker was a timely, fresh counterpoint to the dominant superhero narrative and tone, and it worked,” Gross added. “The filmmakers deserve credit for making more unconventional creative choices in Folie, but this time nothing worked.”

From acclaimed writer/director/producer Todd Phillips comes Joker: Folie À Deux, the much-anticipated follow-up to 2019’s Academy Award-winning Joker, which earned more than $1 billion at the global box office and remains the (second) highest-grossing R-rated film of all time.

The new film stars Joaquin Phoenix once again in his Oscar-winning dual role as Arthur Fleck/Joker, opposite Oscar winner Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born). The film also stars Oscar nominees Brendan Gleeson (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Catherine Keener (Get Out, Capote), alongside Zazie Beetz, reprising her role from Joker.

The movie is rated R for “some strong violence, language throughout, some sexuality, and brief full nudity.”

Finally saw this trainwreck. This movie would have done 10x better had they cut out 90% of the singing, and didn't draw out the courtroom drama so long. I think 10% of the singing worked just fine in the context of it being a delusion sequence and a coping mechanism. The rest was just unnecessary and out of place and ruined the entire pace of the film.

@sully - It didn’t help that the songs were all trash. MAYBE if some of them were actually good it wouldn’t have been so unbearable to watch.

@sully - They need to cut out all of the songs, all of the courtroom "drama" and the prison stuff, just way too boring and unnecessary and doesn't drive the plot forward in any way.

So what are we left with? Just the ending with the 'real' Joker twist. Yeah that can go too.

What are we left with now? No movie at all. Good. Fixed it.

Zaslav be like “ should have written this off as a tax write off instead of Batgirl”.

@TheVisionary25 - No, not really. WB's recovered the amount it would have saved with a tax write-off and about 29M of the P&A spend which may well turn out to be close to what they actually spent. Further they will make at least some additional money from VoD, Disc Sales, and possibly sales to an outside streamer.

As for Batgirl that was purported to be full of setups for movies that will not be made. (Think Synderverse connected)

Not here to troll or anything but I liked this movie and it was beatifully shot. To each their own but I really dont get how it can be considered such a bad movie and why it gets all of this hate. Anyway I think people should keep an open mind when seeing this and not go biased based on reviews.

@Nemesis17then -

The negative reaction to this one stems mostly from its treatment of the protagonist and its apparent retconning of the first one's events. Depending on how much you enjoyed the first movie, it might explain why this one resonated with you.

That is to say, you're by no means for liking it. You're just enjoying its more technical aspects (since you brought up how it was shot) rather than its character arcs and story themes.

@Nemesis17then - that’s fair man

I’m glad you enjoyed it , I know some others that did aswell.

I didn’t care much for the first Joker but I was interested in the sequel since it just felt more unique and interesting to me , will still definitely give it a shot with an open mind as one should.

@Nemesis17then - Same here. Not a fan of the musical aspects of it but understood that they visually added to the movie and also balanced the dark nature of the other scenes. The continuation of Arthur’s story felt interesting enough, as well. The fact that he kind of rejects the Joker image is pretty ballsy and not predictable.

@Nemesis17then - I would go as far as to say I LOVED it, yes the songs sucked but the actual premise and resolution was brilliant and a perfect continuation of the previous one. The first time the joker has taken responsibility for his actions and drops the show clown act, does it work for a mainstream audience? No, but it’s a ballsy and way more interesting route than just watching him kill people all the time

Nemesis17then
Nemesis17then - 10/15/2024, 1:13 AM
@Gambito - I agree. Also it was a way of showing to the audience that we shouldn’t glorify a man that kills other people because even he can regret it in the end especially if he did it in cold blood. There are other messages that I liked about it. But thats just my interpretation. Also Joker has a damn good fashion taste and some sick dance moves.🤡

Ain't nothing wrong with you liking it. I liked a bit of it, I just thought a lot of the other stuff was kinda "meh". There was one specific song and dance number in the courtroom that I really liked and was in a way what I wanted the movie to be. Everything else was just out of place for me. Maybe I'll go back and analyze it a bit further and see if I might have missed anything.
I also was a bit distracted watching in theaters cause there were two fat drunk women giggling behind my row, and a dude in the far top left corner of the theater, literally snoring.

......lmao.
That last example was actually pretty funny.

This is just more bad press DC does not need. As if Superman 25 didn't have enough pressure.

Respectfully disagree.

Negative press can also serve to further lower expectations and make it easier for Superman '25 to impress audiences and have a good run.

Just look at how Agatha is being received.

@DrReedRichards - Can't help but feel like DC is going to follow a similar trajectory to Transformers where the new stuff suffers because of how bad the old stuff was. Ask yourself this. Is it too little too late? How many more chances are you going to get? Have people been burned too much?

...more like, the people who were going to say it's great are doing just that, while the majority of MCU fans decided not to even bother. I'm assuming, of course.

@KennKathleen -

I can safely say, at least from my part, that I was someone mostly indifferent to that release, even as an avid supporter of the MCU, but ended up being pleasantly surprised by it.

At least thus far. Remains to be seen if it manages to stick the landing with its final episode, which seems to be the issue with most MCU shows.

@DrReedRichards - I hear what you’re saying, but I am enjoying Agatha All Along on its merits alone, not by comparing it favorably against something not as good. I had doubts about it when I heard about the series to begin with. I wasn’t sure that she needed a show or what it would be like, but I was willing to give it a try, and I think it’s been great. I am also not one of the anti-woke brigade as you might guess. I’ve enjoyed the story, the Halloween aspect of it if you will and the acting has been superb. I have even enjoyed the music and the singing of the cast.

@RolandD -

I wouldn't say I'm comparing it to something else specifically, but rather estimating it according to my previous expectations, which were admittedly not that high to begin with.

Not saying that it's bad by any means, far from it. Just that having no predetermined bias definitely helped me enjoy the project thus far.

Which may or may not also be the reason for my hottest CBM take ever (judging by expectations), but... Oh, what the hell.
