Joker recently laughed its way past $1 billion at the global box office, making it the first ever R-rated film to achieve this milestone, and now that inevitable sequel has been announced.

According to THR, director Todd Phillips is likely to re-team with star Joaquin Phoenix for a direct follow-up to the controversial film, which would presumably continue Arthur Fleck's journey towards becoming the iconic Clown Prince of Crime.

JOKER Spoilers: A Detailed Plot Breakdown Of Todd Philips' Controversial Origin Story

That's not all, though! The filmmaker reportedly asked WB brass for the rights to develop a portfolio of DC characters' origin stories, and while he didn't get that, he is said to have left the meeting "with the rights to at least one other DC story." We have no idea which character(s) that could be, but there's a lot of trade chatter that it's another villain, with Lex Luthor's name popping up in a couple of reports.

Tell us, did you anticipate this for Joker? How would you like to see Arthur Fleck's story continue? Let us know in the comments, and find out how the movie could set up a possible face-off with Batman by clicking the view list button.

Young Bruce Wayne

We'll start with the most obvious one: The Joker actually meets the future Batman in this movie.

As many rightly guessed, that young boy Arthur Fleck is forcing a smile onto in the trailers is indeed Bruce Wayne. Arthur makes his way to Wayne manner after discovering that Thomas Wayne is his real father, and shows the lad a few magic tricks through the gate. Bruce is unimpressed.

Their interaction is brief, but there is definitely a bit of weight and emphasis placed on the scene. Granted, part of that is down to Arthur believing he's meeting his half brother at the time.

A Different Joker

There is a theory doing the rounds that Joaquin Phoenix's Arthur Fleck could simply be the inspiration for the actual Joker, and he'll be the one to face off against The Batman in the future.

It sounds like a stretch, but this movie does actually leave some room for it.

Fleck's actions inspire an uprising in Gotham, with hundreds of citizens rioting throughout the city wearing clown masks. Isn't it possible that one of these people could take up the mantle of Joker a decade or so later, around the same time Bruce Wayne is beginning to feel a little batty?

The Murder Of Thomas And Martha Wayne

Joker leans into Batman mythology heaviest right at the end, when we're presented with a very faithful depiction of the murders of Bruce Wayne's parents.

A thug inspired by Arthur's execution of Murray Franklin live on TV and his assertion that people like Thomas Wayne are to blame for the degradation of the city follows the Waynes into an alley after a screening of Zorro. As he opens fire, he echoes Fleck's "you get what you deserve" from the Franklin killing.

Of course, we're supposed to assume this will eventually bring Bruce to the conclusion that Joker was at least partially responsible for his parents' deaths.

The Ending

The ambiguous ending, or more accurately, epilogue, of Joker is wide open to interpretation, and leaves plenty of room for Warner Bros. to fold the events of Philips' film into a shared universe.

After Arthur leaves Gotham in flames and fully embraces the Joker persona, we cut to him chuckling during a therapy session in Arkham. Is he recounting his story to his therapist, or imagining the whole thing? We know Fleck is an unreliable narrator and made up an entire relationship in his head, so it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

This gives the studio leeway to basically pick and choose what they want to establish as real, and what we are to believe were the delusions of a damaged mind.

That Final Shot Of Bruce

Perhaps most telling is that quick glimpse of Bruce Wayne standing among the bodies of his slain parents.

Arthur never witnessed this event, so why is it burned into his mind? It's possible that he heard about it after, but either way, this still feels like a major bit of foreshadowing, and not something Reeves or the studio would have added to the film at such a specific moment for no reason.

There were probably a few more Easter Eggs and references, but I've only seen the movie once and these are the major ones I picked up on. Did you spot any more? Let us know in the comments down below.

@nova480s - His releationship with Harley Quinn could be interesting to explore in a 'characterstudy'. Since it's implied that he killed his therapist at the end of the mocie, it could lead directly to Quinn showing up as a young and naive trainee or something.

I mean, I kinda do wanna see more of Phoenix Joker, but at the same time, what more can they do without the inclusion of Batman? I'm more interested in similar type of origin story for someone like Lex Luthor, Mr. Freeze or Harvey Dent.

@BlackBeltJones -none what's so ever .... it did enough leaving things ambiguous to working on other villains origins if that's the case

Hey Philips just go for Lex next then he has a awesome rich history

This was exactly what I was afraid stupid WB was going to do. You would think that they would learn to tell more higher brow creator-driven DC standalone movies, but nope.

Instead they completely missed the point of why Joker was a success, and are turning DC Black into a bunch of pointless villain movies. It's a bloody waste...

@Darkknight2149 - Wasn’t that going to be the point of DC Black anyways?

@MarvelDCAllDay -
No, the point was to tell more creator-driven standalone stories that innovate from the traditional comic book movie formula. That's what most people want anyway.

Instead, WB is trying to push villain origins as their new gimmick and I guarantee you it's going to burn out as fast as the DCEU did.

There are so many things they could have done with these standalones. Kingdom Come, Superman: Red Son, Superman: Secret Identity, an R-rated Hellblazer horror movie, a gothic arthouse Swamp Thing movie, a gritty low budget The Question movie, ETC. The possibilities are endless.

But WB is so damn reactionary and they only know how to copy other shit. First they tried to copy Nolan for their direction with the DCEU. Then they tried to copy Marvel. Now they're copying what Todd Phillips did with Joker. This DC Origins thing isn't going to last.

Todd: “Guys I’m serious. I only plan to do one Joker movie, because it’s a self contained, standalone story.”

WB: “That’s cool.”

*Joker hits a billion*

WB: “Change of plans, Toddy boi..."

Well now you do the Godfather but it's the Joker. Show his rise to power. Maybe the film takes place years later and Bruce is a young Batman. Maybe it's a prequel to Battison's movie.

Was hoping Phillips would stick to the standalone principle

It’s like one of Scorsese’s standalone classics getting a sequel.

Jesus Christ, they're doing exactly what everyone was afraid they were going to do and only making these standalones a bunch of villain origin movies. What a [frick]ing waste of potential.

Now watch it crash and burn as they learn all the wrong lessons from Joker.

Phillips did say he would only do a Joker sequel if they felt they had a story interesting enough to warrant it. Phoenix said the same thing, if both are coming back then count me intrigued. Loved Joker so I'm hoping for something on the same level.

As for the rest of it? A bunch of other Comic villain origin movies? Yeah no, wrong lesson there guys. We don't need that shit.

What a cash grab. I haven’t seen Joker, just like I haven’t seen Venom. I don’t support garbage. I haven’t watched Venom on TV either, and I’ll NEVER watch Joker .. it hits a 1B and all of a sudden sequels and more stand alone movies?!

What a dumpster fire.

@MuadDib - Joker is one of the thinnest weakest movies, the positive reaction around it is basically what happened with Bohemian Rhapsody
