JOKER Star Joaquin Phoenix On Rumored Sequel: "There Are Some Things We Could Do With This Guy"

Rumors have been doing the rounds for quite a while that Warner Bros. and Todd Phillips are planning to move forward with a direct sequel to 2019's Joker, and star Joaquin Phoenix has now shared an update.

Despite persistent rumors and even apparent confirmation from the trades earlier this year, we still don't know if there are solid plans in place for a sequel to Todd Phillips' controversial smash-hit, Joker.

Star Joaquin Phoenix has now shared an update, and while we're no closer to finding out if Joker 2 is definitely going to happen, it sounds like the Academy Award-winner would be interested in further exploring his unique interpretation of the iconic DC Comics villain.

While speaking to The Playlist about his latest film, Mike Mills' C'mon C'mon, Phoenix was asked outright if there was any movement on the project, and while he was mostly noncommittal, his response may suggest that he was choosing his words carefully!

“I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to - you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy. There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

Joker made over $1 billion for Warner Bros., and with both Phoenix and Phillips seemingly interested in continuing Arthur Fleck's tragically compelling story, an eventual sequel almost seems inevitable. Who knows, perhaps we'll finally hear something official during DC FanDome later this month?

Look, I know this is weird to say about a superhero film, but not every movie needs a sequel. And this is one of them. What they should do is have this be a jumping on point for what's essentially elseworlds. You know, putting familiar characters in unfamiliar settings.

I think this should have started Todd Phillips' proposed line of prestige auteur-driven standalone DC movies. Not as a bunch of supervillain origin movies (that would be [frick]ing lame and would miss the point), but elevated standalone films from visionary creators. Imagine a Swamp Thing movie from David Cronenberg, a Lex Luthor movie from the Safdie Brothers, a John Constantine movie directed by Ari Aster, films inspired by Superman: Secret Identity, Red Son, Kingdom Come, ETC.

@Darkknight2149 - exactly what I was thinking. Essentially give a famous director a dc character and tell them to go wild.

@Darkknight2149 - Get good directors to make good DC films? Why not do that anyway? Why not get good directors for your actual films, not just the non-canon elseworlds films. Isn't that what they should be doing anyway?

I'm talking about getting prestige directors on lower budget non-conventional superhero movies and letting them have creative control. Basically the arthouse side of the DC Universe. Not the regular blockbusters we get every year.

It’s already been a few years since it released, and after making a billion dollars and getting a whole bunch of Academy Award nominations and wins, you’d think a sequel would already be in development.

Not that it needs one lol.

But it gives me faith that IF something if announced, it will only be after a really solid idea for a sequel is put together

Give him more of the mobster element. He utilizes the fan following for a purpose not yet known to the group or the audience. The Bat hits the city taking down Jokers enemies, and once his grand plan comes into fruition- and works, the Batman finally crosses paths with him at the Acme Chemical co. to intervene. After their confrontation, The Joker is reborn.

DC's Joker was a great movie a masterpiece and the only comic book movie/show based on the villain that didn't piss me off it was a faithful adaptation of an iconic villain where the character wasn't softened and made effeminate nor watered down, unlike what Marvel has done to Venom, Carnage, that awful Loki show. I definitely would look forward to a sequel.

I'm pretty lukewarm on Todd Philips version of the Joker. I mean if it was something like Joker getting out of the asylum and trying to take over Gotham city and starting a turf war would be interesting. Something along the lines of King of New York and the comic Joker by Brian Azzarello.
