Michael Keaton Weighs in on Christopher Nolan's Batman Movies

The man who "danced with the devil" in Batman and Batman Returns calls Christopher Nolan "great" and says Heath Ledger's performance was "unbelievable."

When it was first announced that comic actor Michael Keaton would be playing Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, in director Tim Burton's live-action Batman, the fan community was in an uproar. However, Keaton delivered a surprisingly complex performance and won over not only the fan community, but most of the world, raking in over $410 million at the box office and ensuring that the movie would launch a franchise.

Of course, we all know the tragic end to that story [insert Bat-nipples joke here], but what we haven't heard before is what Keaton thinks of Christopher Nolan's new vision of Batman in Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

While Keaton admitted in a recent interview with Access Hollywood that he hasn't seen Batman Begins or The Dark Knight from beginning to end, he had high praise for both Nolan and Heath Ledger.

"[Nolan's] unbelievably great. He’s the one who got it...he got it and he took it to a whole other level."

Keaton said that he appreciated the darker tone of Nolan's films and said that that was the direction he woudl have liked to take the character if he had done a third Batman.

"That general direction was always where I thought that character and the story could go. He just did it brilliantly... That Heath Ledger performance [in The Dark Knight] is unbelievable."

I have to admit that I was one of those people [then just a kid] who thought Keaton was a terrible choice to play Batman, but he proved me wrong!

In the imaginary world of my dream movie concepts, Nolan would find the time to do Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns and have Keaton play the role one more time!

I remember thinking the same. But I was just so exited that they were making a Batman movie that it didn't really bother me..also just a nipper! Keaton was great though..even if he did look a bit like a giant black rubber johnny...

Zack Snyder said he would love to make TDKR.. someone give the man the budget!

Damn right! Keaton is freaking Batman! I like Christian Bale, but Keaton is just classic. He really had the dark brooding personality down!

I remember saying... Keaton, really? But as Ror said I was so excited that I got over the feeling quickly. He ripped it up in the end, the best Batman and Bruce Wayne IMO.

Man, Snyder would own TDNR.

Ever since i was a kid i've always thought that Keaton did a great Batman. Took everyone's mind off of that 60's Adam West interpretation. I dont know how slammed im gonna get for saying this, but i think that if it wasnt for Keaton and Tim Burton, we wouldnt have Nolan and Bale today. Think about it.

At that point in the history of CBM's Burton did the best thing possible by making Batman a dark, gothic story full of serious tones. Keaton was a great choice because he embodied that roll and made it the polar opposite of what Adam West had created years before. Not that there's anything wrong with West's Batman, it's just different takes on the character.

If you couldn't tell by my avatar and screen name, Batman is my all time favorite fictional character. I'm with you guys. I was 13 when the first Batman movie came out and I was just completely stoked that they were making it. I was a little shocked when they cast Keaton, but after seeing the movie, I was blown away by his performance. As an adult, watching it now, I can definitely pick out all of the flaws and the things I would do differently, but Batman and Returns are still fun watches for me. Keaton IS Batman to our generation. Somebody should tell Bale to take lessons from Keaton and Conroy on how to change his voice subtley between Bruce Wayne and Batman. :P

i'm not sure that keaton's and bale's performances can really be compared considering the vastly different aesthetics of their movies... i think they're both great in their worlds. and the voice is not bale's doing... he's not the sound mixer.

but as much as i love burton i definitely feel like he did the character a disservice by allowing himself to focus so heavily on the villain... in both movies but particularly the first. the world can rave and slobber about nicholson but as a comic fan i don't hesitate to say that that joker not only sucked balls but ate WAY too much screen time... and keaton would have shone even brighter if his characters had been given the spotlight the way bale's were.

@AlternateNo4- I know Nolan had Bale's voice digitally enhanced, but that's the thing, it was only enhanced. The initial voice that came out WAS Bale's voice. It would be more forgivable if the voice was completely computer generated, but it wasn't, so yeah, Bale is at least partially to blame.

@brazilianbatman- You were never a good Batman fan. Gtfo with your homophobic slurs.

YOU KNOW, KEATON WAS THE BEST BATMAN..

..I PUT IT TO EVERYONE, WHAT WAS IT? BECAUSE HE STILL DID THE GRUFF VOICE, (WICH BALE HAS BEEN JOKED ON ABOUT) WHAT WAS IT?...FOR ME..HE JUST HAD "IT" IT WASN'T COSTUMING OR HEIGHT OR MUSCLES, THERE WAS A CRAZY IN HIM, LIKE AN ENERGY THAT JUST HELD YOU AND YOU FORGOT EVERYTHING ELSE AND JUST WENT ALONG FOR THE RIDE BECAUSE HE SOLD IT.

DC and WB learned at all costs HOW to make one of the WORSTS - Batman & Robin - and then one of the BESTS - The Dark Knight - superhero movies of ALL time.

I hope they continue to make the GOOD ones with Green Lantern, Batman 3 and others to come... like Man of Steel

@matches—fair enough... but i'm a big bale fan and so i tend to try to find ways to defend him!

i guess i'm in the minority in this opinion, but i'm convinced that nolan's "real-world" vision led him and bale to go with that voice. i mean, as comic fans we are ok with a domino mask or a pair of glasses to conceal one's identity, but if nolan's goal was to make it real-world plausible, he needed a voice that was so "over the top" it could never be recognized by ANYONE, even bruce's childhood friend. keaton's and conroy's voices just aren't enough of a change to accomplish that in nolan's "real world." i don't really like listening to bale's batman voice either, but i'm not sure they could have achieved their goal any other way.

I thought Keaton was great as Batman. Don't think the director really got the character(s) though. I don't think he's better than Bale but its kinda tough to judge, I mean, they are playing Batman at different points in his career so Bale is playing the rookie version and Keaton was playing the Veteran version. I'll bet that the 3rd movie we'll really see Batman come into his own and then that will make a better comparison.

I think both Keaton and Bale are the best Batman's. Both becuase they portayed Batman in totally different ways and they made it their own (they both left their mark).

WTF Brazlianbatman !!? Dude you crazy mother [frick]er! Micheal Keaton is the best Batman!! To bad we could have had him for Nolan series given he was young still ;( I don't think anyone has topped Keaton s Batman performance.

Keaton is a freaky guy, and Batman/Bruce Wayne is a freaky guy. He did a great job. I love Bale's version, but he doesn't seem so mentally affected as Keaton. Michael definitely makes you say: Wow, look at those eyes this guy is a psycho!

@AlternateNo4- I definitely see your point. I'm a pretty big Bale fan too, so I understand why you're defending his performance. I have to agree with GUNSMITH on the voice changer. I think if Nolan could have deepened his voice way lower instead of making it so scratchy, it might not grate on my nerves so much.

I love keaton as batman and i loved the two first batman movies as a kid and even now. But...the rubber suit the silly gadgets and the focus on joker are a problem for me after batman begins.I mean the first batman should be named joker and dont get me wrong nickolson was great but the movie was called batman. Now between bale or keaton its a tough call but given that keaton's batman wasnt as developed i would have to pick bale.Yes the batvoice sometimes its annoying but lines like SWEAR TO ME in begins or when he yells to maroni WHERE IS HE was completely awesome and in the interogation scene with joker the voice didnt bother me at all. Also keaton didnt have the chance to explore the playboy wayne that bale performs like a charm.

Michael Keaton was AWESOME, his performace still holds up today.
@GUNSMITH.. "THERE WAS A CRAZY IN HIM, LIKE AN ENERGY THAT JUST HELD YOU AND YOU FORGOT EVERYTHING ELSE AND JUST WENT ALONG FOR THE RIDE BECAUSE HE SOLD IT". I don't think you could have described it better!
Christian Bale is an AMAZING Bruce Wayne AND looks just like him and Batman, yeah his voice needs some work but he is a brillant actor and I'm sure by the next film he will have taken notice and fix the problems the fans have been vocal (pun intended) about.
Kevin Conroy is still the BEST Batman and back in the day (IMO) he could have almost pulled off a live action performance..if Keaton did, Conroy could of as well!

Oh yeah and BATMAN IS THE BEST COMIC BOOK CHARACTER OF ALL TIME....did I mention that Batman is my ALL time favorite character? haha

Keaton was great as Bats and I still enjoy watching his two takes on Batman. It would be nice to see Keaton take up a background role in Nolen's third film as a nod to his ventures as the Caped Crusader.

I prefer Bale, but I like Keaton. To an extent it's not fair to compare because while I prefer just about everything about Bale's performance, I'm a guy who completely prefers Nolan's take on Batman over Burton's. So, it might be interesting hypothetically to imagine switching certain things aroung like if Nolan directed Keaton and Nicholson.
