TDKR Officially Begins Principal Photography, Shoot Will "Span 3 Continents"

Warner Bros/Legendary Pictures have issued a press release officially confirming that shooting has begun on Christopher Nolan's third and final Batman flick..

There isn't much new here. WB do confirm the extensive use of IMAX cameras, reiterate who the cast/characters are and confirm the movie's "3 continent" shoot. Story details? You must be mad!

Here is the release in full..

Principal photography has begun on Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ “The Dark Knight Rises,” the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy.

Leading an all-star international cast, Oscar® winner Christian Bale (“The Fighter”) again plays the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman.

The film also stars Anne Hathaway, as Selina Kyle; Tom Hardy, as Bane; Oscar® winner Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”), as Miranda Tate; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, as John Blake.

Returning to the main cast, Oscar® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”) plays Alfred; Gary Oldman is Commissioner Gordon; and Oscar® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”) reprises the role of Lucius Fox.

In helming “The Dark Knight Rises,” Christopher Nolan is utilizing IMAX® cameras even more extensively than he did on “The Dark Knight,” which had marked the first time ever that a major feature film was partially shot with IMAX® cameras. The results were so spectacular that the director wanted to expand the use of the large-format cameras for this film.

The screenplay for “The Dark Knight Rises” is written by Christopher Nolan and Jonathan Nolan, story by Christopher Nolan & David S. Goyer. The film is being produced by Emma Thomas, Christopher Nolan and Charles Roven, who previously teamed on “Batman Begins” and the record-breaking blockbuster “The Dark Knight.” The executive producers are Benjamin Melniker, Michael E. Uslan, Kevin De La Noy and Thomas Tull, with Jordan Goldberg serving as co-producer. “The Dark Knight” is based upon characters appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. Batman was created by Bob Kane.

Behind the scenes, “The Dark Knight Rises” reunites the director with several of his longtime collaborators, all of whom worked together on the “The Dark Knight.” The creative team includes director of photography Wally Pfister, who recently won an Oscar® for his work on Nolan’s “Inception”; production designer Nathan Crowley; editor Lee Smith; and Oscar®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (“Topsy-Turvy”). In addition, Paul Franklin and Chris Corbould, who both won Oscars® for the effects in “Inception,” will supervise the visual and special effects, respectively. The music will be composed by Oscar® winner Hans Zimmer (“The Lion King”).

The locations for “The Dark Knight Rises” span three continents and include the American cities of Pittsburgh, New York and Los Angeles, as well as sites in India, England and Scotland

“The Dark Knight Rises” is a presentation of Warner Bros. Pictures, in association with Legendary Pictures. Slated for release on July 20, 2012, the film will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Seems like a bit of an unnecessary press release to me, since everyone already knows that the movie has stated shooting. I mean couldn't they have at least included a still or logo from the movie to go along with this? Anyway, what do they care, here we are reporting on it regardless! Still no glimpses of any of the actors on the London sets either, but Nolan's ninjas cant keep em hidden forever! Expect leaks soon.

The return of the all star cast. Hopefully the pursuit of Batman by the police will be close to "Mask of the Phantasm", but more severe.

Oldman has no Oscar???

ya know, I have little respect for the Academy since "L.A. Confidential" got beat out by "Titanic" ...and none of the male actors in it scored an Oscar either.......but! that said, it is a sign of respect and Oldman is incredibly overdue.

Oldman will get one very soon I believe. If not for Tinker Sailor Soldier Spy, then maybe even TDKR!

This will be the best comicbook film next year. Best overall actors. Best director working on a comicbook film next year. Will have best story for a comicbook film next year.

I agree with Ror. Oldman is overdue and needs to get the credit he deserves for being such a versitile actor. That being said-

THIS MOVIE IS GONNA FRIGGIN ROCK! I'm so stoked that Nolan is using the IMAX cameras more on this film. This will be midnight premier on an IMAX screen.

I just checked Oldman's IMDB page for awards..
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000198/awards

he's never been NOMINATED even???

not for Sid and Nancy? or Leon? or Immortal Beloved? or True Romance? ....haven't seen other stuff like State of Grace.

but still. just. wow. it's soooooooooo hard to give respect to something as prestigious as the Academy when you learn crap like that.

" greatest love story of all. believable, warm hearted, just beautiful."

And I say it was schmaltzy, cheesy, unconvincing and contrived:) Different strokes. I did like it when I was a kid, but then I also liked Power Rangers.

I think it's a possibility that TDKR will be recognized by the academy. Remember the flak they got for ignoring TDK? Of course Nolan has to deliver a good enough movie first. But we don't know how big or small a part Gordon will play yet, don't rule anything out.

Oldman deserves an Oscar for sure, he's a consistently brilliant actor.

It's down to his film choices I think.
He does films he enjoys and doesn't jump into films that have Oscar written all over them before they're even made.
They guy must get a shit load of offers but seems like he's in films for the joy of the experience of story-telling and not the medals.

But yea, the guy will have one any year now, deservedly so.

Ah look, Titanic wasn't a BAD movie. I get why so many love it, as I got older it just lost it's appeal, I felt that Cameron was forcing out emotions. Plus, the script was diabolical.

Hopefully someone will get a snap shot of the new bat-ride soon, because we all know chicks dig the car.

@puyguy don't be so sure about the Academy dismissing TDKR because it's a Batman film, remember Heath Ledger won a posthumous Academy Award for his role as the Joker in TDK. Maybe it was because of the hype over his death, but he definitely deserved it, and perhaps that may have changed the Academy's perception of CBMs.

Update - Never mind, Heath got a Golden Globe, not an Oscar. My mistake. Woopsie.

Update again - spoke too soon, yeah he did get an Academy Award as well as a Golden Globe.
