Yesterday, we brought you the news that The Batman had opened to $128.5 million in North America, but the updated final numbers are even better than expected. Bear in mind that initial estimates suggested a $100 million debut may or may not happen, while we later heard that $110 million - $115 million would likely be as good as it gets for the DC Comics adaptation.
Well, The Batman actually ended up making a massive $134 million domestic this weekend, with a $56.6 million Friday (including $21.6 million from Thursday evening previews), $43.25 million Saturday, and a $31.15 million Sunday. After topping the $100 million mark by Saturday night, analysts now believe the movie will reach $143 million tonight and ultimately earn $400 million in the U.S.
It's not controversial to point out that DC movies aren't typically quite as financially successful as those from Marvel Studios, but The Batman achieved an impressive feat this weekend, nonetheless.
Even in this pandemic era, the movie scored the fourth-biggest opening of all-time for a DC Comics adaptation behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($160 million), and The Dark Knight ($158 million). Don't be surprised if Warner Bros. now doubles down on this Batverse, as it's clear the Caped Crusader remains their biggest superhero draw.
There's still no official word on a sequel to The Batman, but at least two HBO Max spinoffs are in the works and it sounds like Matt Reeves is certainly keen to continue telling this hero's story.
