THE BATMAN Ended Up With An Even Bigger Domestic Box Office Opening Than Originally Reported

Yesterday, we brought you the news that The Batman had opened to $128.5 million in North America, but the updated final numbers are even better than expected. Bear in mind that initial estimates suggested a $100 million debut may or may not happen, while we later heard that $110 million - $115 million would likely be as good as it gets for the DC Comics adaptation.

Well, The Batman actually ended up making a massive $134 million domestic this weekend, with a $56.6 million Friday (including $21.6 million from Thursday evening previews), $43.25 million Saturday, and a $31.15 million Sunday. After topping the $100 million mark by Saturday night, analysts now believe the movie will reach $143 million tonight and ultimately earn $400 million in the U.S.

It's not controversial to point out that DC movies aren't typically quite as financially successful as those from Marvel Studios, but The Batman achieved an impressive feat this weekend, nonetheless.

Even in this pandemic era, the movie scored the fourth-biggest opening of all-time for a DC Comics adaptation behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice ($166 million), The Dark Knight Rises ($160 million), and The Dark Knight ($158 million). Don't be surprised if Warner Bros. now doubles down on this Batverse, as it's clear the Caped Crusader remains their biggest superhero draw.

There's still no official word on a sequel to The Batman, but at least two HBO Max spinoffs are in the works and it sounds like Matt Reeves is certainly keen to continue telling this hero's story.

Here comes the infinit overhyping. Like we all didn't know even a shitty Batman movie prints money.

This is basically DC's Avengers. The biggest thing they have.

@Dope21 - except their current highest earner is Aquaman. Theatrically speaking, that is. I know, you tell me this 5 years ago, I would have laughed until my sides hurt.

Well deserved. Reeves made a damn good Batman movie. This is easily the closest Batman has felt to a gritty Film noir, and it nailed the character perfectly.

Second best Batman movie, or tied for first.

I don't think people will go back more than twice to see it. Non fans especially will see it once. That 3 hour runtime, its definitely going to drop next weekend. I'm assuming WB knew this thats why theyre letting it go to HBO next month.

shit i saw it 3 times but SPOILER:

on the third watch i realized the damn photos Riddler took of Anika and Mitchell are taken from the exact same apartment where Riddler is living across from Iceberg Lounge lol. and neither Bats nor Gordon are intelligent enough to even consider investigating where the photos were taken. This is a detective movie where Batman is a terrible detective and so is Jim Gordon. i mean he plugs a usb into his laptop so that the plot can move forward, and Batman chases Penguin into oncoming traffic and shatters a glass ceiling above Madison Square Garden, potentially killing more folk than the 4channers could. I mean the movie had all the right ingredients, Pattinson is easily the best Batman by far, but the writing undercuts the movie.

if it werent for Batman jumping out of a skyscraper to save Rachel in The Dark Knight to then just completely forget to go back up and rescue the partygoers from Joker, or CAPTURE JOKER, id argue its pretty below the Nolan films on third viewing. But i rewatched the first two this past weekend and TDK surprisingly has a ton of stupid plot holes similar to this film that undercuts the story. But it moves at such a pace and with Ledger that no one cares. Begins is prolly still the best.

@McMurdo - Reminder that this is a Batman in his early days. He's not the world's greatest detective yet.

@MrKeyzerSoze - he’s not a detective at all in this he needs everyone around him to figure things out. He can solve bad riddles that’s as much as he gets to do here.

It should have a 3x multiplier at least, so I figure about $800M WW total, which is great! The Hollywood elite are probably groaning right now with the continued success of superhero films, which makes the success even sweeter.
