THE BATMAN Star Colin Farrell Shares Sequel Hopes And Confirms Matt Reeves Won't Direct THE PENGUIN Series

The Batman star Colin Farrell has shared his hopes to return as Oswald Cobblepot in The Batman 2, while confirming Matt Reeves won't direct any episodes of the upcoming Penguin spinoff coming to HBO Max.

Colin Farrell underwent a major physical transformation to become The Batman's Penguin, and delivered a scene-stealing performance in the process. The usually very handsome Irish actor looked every bit the scarred and slovenly mob boss we know Oswald Cobblepot to be, and that was down to some amazing makeup and practical effects.

We know the villain's story will continue in a spinoff series coming to HBO Max, but Farrell told Entertainment Tonight that he remains keen to be part of The Batman sequel as well.

"Oh my god, you kidding me?!" the actor responded when asked about a possible return. "It's so much fun, are you joking [with] me? I've been around the block man. That was an easy sport, I mean...it was a joy."

Carmine Falcone's death in The Batman has left a void in Gotham City that "Oz" can now fill. We have to believe this series will chronicle his rise to power, with the movie sequel then picking up with him as an even greater threat to the Dark Knight (and something tells us he'll be gunning for revenge after the way he was treated by Batman and Lieutenant Jim Gordon).

Asked to share details on that HBO Max spinoff, Farrell confirmed that Matt Reeves won't be stepping behind the camera. "Matt's up to his bollocks, you know, hovering over the keyboard and just planning the story because he's just so meticulous," he said of the show. "He's so obsessive about what he does, but he's all over [HBO Max's] The Penguin [series] as well."

"I mean, he's not gonna direct it but he's all over the structure of the scripts and who's gonna direct them. And so, it's exciting."

The untitled Penguin spinoff is expected to begin production next year, though there's no word on a possible premiere date. Warner Bros. is also said to be plotting a TV show set in Arkham Asylum, likely following The Riddler after his imprisonment and the formative years of The Joker.

As for The Batman 2, we're still waiting on release date news from Warner Bros.

For once we have a purely comic book version of Bruce and Batman. Hype af for anything involved

@bobevanz - which comics? Until we see Clayface, Mr. Freeze, Two-Face, The Mad Hatter, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Killer Croc, Bane, Scarface, The Man Bat, Joker and Harley, Ras Al Ghul, Hugo Strange, The Court of Owls and an accurate Riddler taking over sections of Gotham and overwhelmed Bruce to the point where he needs to assemble a team of young vigilantes to help him even the odds against the craziness that is Gotham City, I'm not sure what you mean by purely comic book. Riddler sure wasn't purely comic book, and I'd venture to say Danny Devito was more comic accurate than Colin's Penguin. The Batman was just another "grounded" take on the characters, bathed heavily in noire sensibilities and trying to appeal to the detective side of the character and little else. Not saying there is anything wrong with this approach, but The Batman was almost nothing like the comics I've been reading the past 10 to 15 years. Pick up Batmans main title run from the past 2 decades and the tone and characters are nothing like The Batman was.

I definitely have Batman fatigue so I'm not overly thrilled with spinoffs from any live action version of Batman. But I will say that I'm happy WB has faith in the world that Matt Reeves created and happy that the fans of that world are getting some more content based on it and possibly expanding it.

@SonOfAGif - mind if I ask what caused the fatigue?

Although I thoroughly enjoyed The Batman and Farrell's Penguin, I'm not yet sold really on this show. So far it sounds quite a bit like Gotham (minus the young Bruce), so I wonder how it's gonna set itself apart from that.

@bkmeijer1 - Had the same issue you're saying with this Penguin show. But I guess as long as it's good, then it won't matter. Now that I've seen Collin Farrell's Penguin, this show became more interesting.

@KWilly - "as long as it's good, then it won't matter."

Can't argue with that.

Why oh WHY do we need a Penguin spinoff series? Oh, I forgot, because it's all about milking the Bat franchise to the (HBO) Max. What I wouldn't give for a HBO Max series on, well, here's just a random spitball idea, but maybe a series on BATMAN?

@CaptainAustralia - it’s kind of crazy when you think about how well WW and Aquaman did, then you have the Shazam movies, yet they still seem to think a billion Batman IPs is needed

I really enjoyed the Batman. It had its flaws but I liked the tone and how it all made me feel. With that being said I have zero interest in a penguin series, maybe it’s just me but all this villains getting their own story like, Joker and Venom just don’t appeal to me in the slightest

@Twenty23Three - that’s how I feel venom is only movie I feel neutral about does have his big bulky size, and powers and look of ultimate venom and personality of Letha protector yea he does stop showing venom in dark scene places it’s not Godzilla movie showing Godzilla only fights at night

I can imagine a war between Falcone's lieutenants (including Tony Zucco), the Grayson family as collateral damage, and Dick as a gang war orphan.

So in Batman 2, Dick is the patient of psychologist Lee Thompkins. Through the young Grayson, Lee Thompkins remembers the tragedy of the Waynes. Finally, she gets Bruce involved in the plot with a young orphan who needs to manage his anger.

Janet McTeer could be a great Lee Thompkins.

Of all the spinoffs you could do, why this I have no idea. Farrell was great but come on...

All whilst, plenty of other more deserving DC characters stay on the shelf

Colin Farrell's Penguin was the ONLY thing I liked about the The Batman, and The Riddler disappointed me, I thought he was going to be INCREDIBLE...

I don't think The Penguin can lead his own series though, you'd need to bring in other villains, and some other lesser known street level heroes besides Batman.

I really don't get how so many people don't see the appeal of a crime drama set in Gotham. Especially one with Farrell's Penguin as the lead. That pitch sounds amazing to me.

I don't think many actually care at this point except maybe for the die hards.

The Batman was an interesting watch the first time, but it was so damn sullen and grim that it doesn't inspire repeat viewings.

I would rather re-watch Batman 1989 or Batman Begins or Dark Knight over that.
