Tom Hardy Shares His Thoughts On Gary Oldman And His Plans After The Dark Knight Rises!

In a revealing interview, the British actor praises his TDKR and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy co-star Gary Oldman, as well as discussing how his career has changed and what his future holds after playing the villainous Bane...

Talking to ShortList recently, the subject of The Dark Knight Rises didn't really come up (although, let's be honest, we all know he wouldn't have betrayed director Christopher Nolan's confidence by divulging any secrets!) although he did share his thoughts on Gary Oldman, an actor who he's also worked on recently in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. "Gary Oldman is my absolute complete and utter hero. He’s the [frick]ing man. I look at him and I want to be like that for my generation — I want to have that same quality. He’s incredible. And there is a definite 'hang on a minute' [moment], but I’ve got past the star-struck part now."

And what of HIS future? With his fame rocketing thanks to roles in the likes of Inception and Warrior, this is a good time for Hardy, something he's very much aware of.

"It’s almost the beginning and the end of a phase for me. It’s the beginning of working in America, and we’ve managed to put together a range of projects, but I think over a period of time I’ll slowly pull out. Otherwise you’re exposed to the market. Once I’ve completely finished on a couple of films, such as The Dark Knight Rises and Mad Max, you’ll probably see me fade away. I might f*ck off completely. It’s like laying a field down with crops — you need to leave the field, man, sometimes, so you can grow sh*t again. I’ll [frick] off if I have to. Sometimes you need to know when to leave the casino."

What do you guys make of Hardy's comments? Are there any other superhero movies you'd like to see him in? Be sure to share your thoughts in the usual place!

I will reserve judgment for other comic book movie roles for him until I see TDKR. I like him as an actor though.

This guy's a man's man.
Not the typical effeminate, metro-sexual Hollywood wuss.
He's willing to make a few million bucks and drop off the scene. Dude's smart.

i know his smart for doing this, but i dont want him doing a mickey rourke on us and leaving movies for 15 years. I want him to do a film every so often, like once a year or something. Not over saturated but there often enough. I really love his work.

This part of the interview may also interest some of you...

Hardy admitted during a candid 2010 interview that he had homosexual encounters in his narcotic-peppered 20s. We begin to approach this topic by mentioning his 'experimental' period.

"When I did drugs and [frick]ed men, is that what you mean?" Er, yes, that kind of thing. Does that experience make him a better actor?

At least he's honest! :)

@joshwilding- People change, sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worse. It seems like his changes made him a better performer.
@sackboy1991- good point.

He'll do films every so often. In his "f*ck off" statements, he more than likely means to NOT become the AMERICAN HOLLYWOOD pretty boy big buck action star. He'll probably still do plenty of work in the UK, that would still be considered serious movie roles..just not become the typical American actor, that his looks alone, portray his to become. I respect the HELL out of that

Just got back from watching Tinker, Tailor, and Gary and Tom are definitely stand outs IMO, they have amazing chemistry together on screen. If Bane and Gordon have any scenes together in TDKR, we're in for something special.

It's a refreshing change to hear an actor speak that openly. I'm just glad that he's straightened himself out (that's not a reference to him having sex with men, I'm talking about the drinks and drugs, lol) and things are going well. Hardy is a phenomenal actor and he deserves the success he's getting right now IMHO.

Is Hardy retiring or something? Is this the way a young actor should talk- I'll do a couple of movies, then I'm gone?

Isn't being an actor about talent and dedication in the long run? Out of all of his comments, this one seems the most ridiculous.

He's not talking about retiring, he's talking about doing big budget hollywood movies....he'll do it for as long as he wants to and then just go back to doing the smaller more independent stuff, it's a smart move for an actor. Keeps his integrity, doesn't sell out, perfect.

I'm glad he's so open about his past and doesn't care about people's opinion. That's badass!

Imagine Tom Hardy winning an Oscar, then at the very end of his speech screaming "AND NOW I'M [frick]ING OFF!" in his Bronson voice...that shit would be hilarious.

In all seriousness though, I admire what he said. Although I'd love to see him act forever, everyone reaches a peak, and a real pro knows that when that time comes, you have to honorably step down. Tom Hardy is the best, and I can't wait for Bane in TDKR.
alekesam
alekesam - 9/21/2011, 5:15 PM
Yeah, seriously. He seems to be well aware of the pitfalls of doing too many big budget Hollywood movies. That he admires Gary Oldman makes sense because Oldman will ever so often do big budget flicks but a majority of his roles has been smaller movies/independent. As someone mentioned before, too bad Nicolas Cage never learned to say no to a role.

He blew me away with his performance in Bronson. Such a talented actor.

Five favorite actors:
- Christian Bale
- Russel Crowe
- Morgan Freeman
- Bradley Cooper
- Tom Hardy

I say he's earned that spot on my list. It's hard to impress me with performances, so the fact that he's on my Top 5 says something. (To me, at least. I know all of you couldn't care less)
