BATMAN V SUPERMAN Star Jesse Eisenberg Reflects On DCEU Experience As Lex Luthor: "People Hate Me"

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice star Jesse Eisenberg has reflected on his time playing Lex Luthor in the DCEU, admitting that he would be "shocked" if the opportunity to return as the villain came up.

Jesse Eisenberg first played Lex Luthor in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and, from the very start, it was apparent we were getting a very different take on the iconic DC Comics villain. More Mark Zuckerberg than Doctor Doom, Eisenberg's nebbish portrayal of the character was extremely interesting, but not necessarily what comic book fans were looking for.

While not physically intimidating (there was no green armour, for starters), this Luthor was every bit the dastardly villain as his comic book counterpart, even forcing the Man of Steel to kneel before him at one point.

Eisenberg later reprised the role in Justice League, setting up the Injustice League in the theatrical cut and sending Deathstroke after Batman in the Snyder Cut. Had the originally planned sequels to that movie become a reality, Luthor would have played a key role in Darkseid's invasion of Earth.

Talking at the 28th Sarajevo Film Festival, the actor reflected on his DCEU experience. "I felt very personal about it. The writer, Chris Terrio, is a very serious writer, and he’s a very emotional person. He thought a lot about my character, and I thought a lot about my character too."

"I talked with my acting coach about the character a lot, about his backstory with his father and his emotional life - and then people hate me."

Later, Eisenberg would say that, "I’d be shocked if I wound up in a DC movie, but it would be a pleasant shock. Listen, I’m not a comic book fan. To me, it was not playing a role that I’d envisioned since childhood. To me, it was a chance to play this great character that this great writer wrote, and I loved doing that."

"So, to play it is a joy, and to not play it isn’t something that I’m going to be ashamed to tell my kids about, because that is not an important genre in my life, even though I loved doing that movie," he continued, adding that he hasn't shut the door on starring in another superhero movie should the right script come his way.

These comments are similar to what Eisenberg said to us last year, and you can check out that interview below:

As different as his Lex was from the classic typical comics Lex, I thought he was a pretty good antagonist, and I personally wouldn't mind seeing him again.

I quite liked his Lex and thought it was a very realistic take on a modern Lex.

Lex today would have been a tech mogul. An Elon Musk type.

wasn’t my ideal version of what I wanted to see from a modern theatrical Lex, but I certainly didn’t “hate” him. Actually found him pretty entertaining at times.

HUGE MISCAST! HATED HIS GEEKY LEX LUTHOR! HORRIBLE! THE ROCK WOULD HAVE MADE FOR A GREAT LEX LUTHOR IF THEY BASED IT ON SUPERMAN THE ANIMATED SERIES.

@blitzkreg - they Cavill would have start juicing like crazy just to compare. Imagine a Lex who towers over Superman in height and physique.

The writing took what was implied to be a sexual abuse victim (Via his father) and turned him into a quirky tech guy who is incapable of being taken seriously. I'm unsure how much of the fault lies in the acting, directing, writing, etc... where the blame should be placed - but people did not need or want a Lex Luthor who was effectively just the Riddler mixed with the Joker. If you name swapped him to the Riddler I'd argue you probably have a more accurate portrayal of that character as opposed to being Lex and they even run with such a concept in The Batman.

Lex appeals because he's calm and collected, a portrayal such as Stan Edgar (The Boys) only with hints of an underlying sense of anger when he's talking alone with Superman would have been the way to go.

@Scarilian - I think you've definitely pointed out a big issue with this version of Lex by mentioning how he was kind of a mixture of Lex and The Riddler - hasn't it been confirmed already that when Jesse was cast he actually WAS going to play The Riddler before the script was rewritten and he was recast as Lex instead?

Can't help but think they probably carried over some of Riddler's characterisation which definitely didn't do Jesse or Lex any favours.

@AC1 - You're correct. He ended up being an amalgam of the two characters after the Riddler was written out of the film.

Nah I’m good. His Lex was shit. He is a good actor and could have been a great Lex but he is always tied to BVS. Just like Leto could have been a great Joker but the director and writers [frick]ed it up. There hasn’t been a great movie Lex yet.

His lex was god awful. But I blame it on Snyder's crap direction with the franchise. He's a good actor but they directed him to act like the riddler or some weird hyper hipster🤡

Very odd. Oh well💁
