DARK KNIGHT Star Gary Oldman On BATMAN v SUPERMAN: "It's Got Big Shoes To Fill"

Yahoo UK chatted with Gary Oldman while he was doing press for 20th Century Fox's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. During the discussion the actor was asked to share his thoughts on Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as Oldman has a bit of experience with making comic book movies as he played Jim Gordon in Christopher Nolan's epic Batman trilogy.

“They want to keep it going. Of course they do. But, it’s Superman yeah? Batman and Superman together? We shall see. The thing about Nolan, there was some grounding of reality to it. In our trilogy, and as fantastical and as big as The Joker was, it was based [on reality]… we could relate to it. But now we’ve got a Batman and we’ve got a guy who can fly who’s an alien?! We’ll have to see…It’s got big shoes to fill." - Gary Oldman

BATMAN v SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE - Zack Snyder will direct. It's written by Chris Terrio, from a screenplay by David S. Goyer. The film stars: Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent and Ben Affleck as Batman/Bruce Wayne. The cast also includes: Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, Diane Lane as Ma Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman/Diana Prince. Will arrive in theaters May 6, 2016.

Wow, the article just got posted and @LTTOBTS is already butthurt hahaha. Oldman's comments aren't unfounded, but I think it would be more difficult to introduce Superman to The Dark Knight trilogy than Batman to The Man of Steel Universe.

Again with the simple minded misinterpreting "reality" in these movies.

The motivations, the inspirations, the story, the development is what we relate to. The TDK trilogy aimed to have a realistic TONE. What would be the actual mindset, feelings, and consequences of a story like this?

In such a way Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes are based in reality. They try to give a sound explanation to very absurd subject matter.

I have faith that Snyder could pull it off. Maybe we could actually see Batman actually do crazy ass shit unlike Nolan's Trilogy (No disrespect to Nolan, but you have to admit that he grounded the franchise too much.)

THANK YOU. I wish more people would understand that. Nolan was never actually trying to make the Bat trilogy as realistic as possible in every sense of the word. That makes no sense. Batman himself is as unrealistic as you can get. Same goes for Scarecrow, Two-Face, Bane, etc etc etc.

Movies are simply never going to be as realistic or as logical as possible. Ever. I just made this comment on a separate thread, but I might as well post here too:

"Movies are inherently unrealistic and illogical, because that's exactly the point to them. If every movie ONLY did things in a logical, realistic way...they'd be terrible. TDK relies on the Joker being almost all-knowing with his plans and backup plans and all that. Is any of it realistic or logical? No way. But does it make for a thrilling, emotional, theme-heavy plot? Heck yeah!"

Do I really want to listen to this for the next 40 years? Maybe I'll die in 5 and that is acceptable. But say, I stick around for 5 and I'm still alive...then what? I can't just leave her then. I'll be 40 then, and who wants to date a 40 year old Yoss? We already have a dog and I am not giving her up. [frick]. It's a trap is what it is. What is she even on about? I should raise an eyebrow. I honestly loved the portrayal Nolan gave Bats in his films. However his realistic approach towards the films haunted him from capturing very iconic villains like Mr.Freeze, Clayface, Killer Croc, Poison Ivy and even Bane (physically wise) I really thought he was going to at least give Bane a bit of cgi for the muscles and etc. but that one scene when Bane broke the wall wih his fist and seeing the size he was just didn't add up for me.

Again, I loved Nolan's trilogy and I even own them all on bluray but I'm really pumped to see the new DCCU's take on the Batman character AND his gallery of villains! I loved heaths joker but now's the time to start predicting/voicing what we want to see the next actor who'll play the joker being to the character. I'm honestly interested in seeing a more theatrical, looney joker combined with the twisted psychotic elements we've seen.

No thewonderer, Gary's remark to, "grounding of reality", was in reference to people not being able to fly, and other things that are found in comic books. Nolan would have never put a proper Killer Croc, or a proper Man-Bat in his movies cause they are not "grounded in reality". That's why we got a crap of a Bane in his movie.

That was one of the main negative aspects to Nolan's trilogy. He tried his best to take away the "comic book" part of Batman. It's like how Brian Singer would have done X-Men 1 with no powers at all if he could have gotten away with it.

If you read the full interview, you know he is not anti-semitic. He just talks about the hypocrisy of select people calling out those who make these public statements, when they themselves have their own demons.

Everybody has their faults, and that is what Oldman was trying to say.
