Darkknight2149's Opinion On The Third Trailer For BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE

A brand new trailer for the highly anticipated BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE has recently dropped, giving as our first glimpse at the Trinity in action and a reveal of a new villain.

"It's time you learn what it means to be a man."

The third trailer for 2016's most anticipated comic book film, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, aired on Jimmy Kimmel this week before being officially released on a little place called the internet. Although the third trailer didn't quite reach the number of viewers that the first trailer for Captain America: Civil War did (see my review for that here), the Dawn of Justice trailer received much attention upon release, as it confirmed a few things that some fans have been suspecting for a while.

The trailer opens with a scene at a press conference in which reporter Clark Kent comes face to face with billionaire Bruce Wayne. Let me start off by saying that I have a hard time believing that Kent has never heard of Wayne, especially considering his profession. I feel that either Kent is putting on an act, or he has been living under a rock. Regardless, I liked the banter between Clark Kent and Bruce Wayne as each character attempts to top the other, though I'm not so sure about Ben Affleck's hoarse accent (it kind of gives his Batman voice away). I have to point out that Henry Cavill looks perfect as Clark Kent. Everything from the glasses to the trench coat just shows that the costume designers know their material well.

I am not so enthusiastic when it comes to Lex Luthor, as portrayed by Jesse Eisenberg. I can definitely see what the film is going for, with the character's eccentricity and the call back to Luthor's early days as a mad scientist in the comics, but at the end of the day, Eisenberg's character just isn't Lex Luthor. I know that everyone probably has their own unique idea of what Luthor should be, but Eisenberg doesn't seem like the Luthor I am familiar with, at least not at the moment. Inevitably, someone is going to try and tell me that Eisenberg is playing Luthor's son but that just isn't the case. Eisenberg is portraying the Lex Luthor. The only thing that his full name in the film, Alexander Luthor, Jr., indicates is that his father was also named Lex Luthor. Don't expect Luthor's father to show up in an after credits scene as a tease for the Man of Steel sequel.

Something that I want to address that has set the internet on fire is that, in the trailer, there is a scene in which Batman is seen carrying a gun of some sort. Many fans have began arguing that this goes against Batman's strict 'no guns' role. This is due to a sweeping misconception caused by people that take the phrase 'no guns' too literally. Batman has a problem carrying real lethal guns, with bullets, explosives, ETC. Batman has no problem carrying gun-like gadgets (such as an EMP) and, in many circumstances, has no problem using non-lethal guns.

Of all the surprises packed in the Batman v Superman trailer, two of them in particular stood out from the others. The biggest of the two involves Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman standing together, about to head into battle. We're finally going to see DC's Trinity on the big screen. I'll let that sink in for a moment...

The second of the two big reveals is that Doomsday will be an antagonist in the film. I don't know what to think of this at the moment. What appears to be happening is that Lex Luthor is experimenting on General Zod's corpse, which results in the creation of Doomsday. This aligns with previous rumours that I was convinced were fake. In a Man of Steel viral video, Doomsday was mentioned in Kryptonian text, implying that Doomsday already existed on Krypton. Unless the trailer is misleading us, then Zod becoming Doomsday is a definite inconsistency.

Over all, the third trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is an exciting one, despite very clear flaws. Although I am more hyped for this film than any other that 2016 has to offer, I can't help but feel a little nervous. Considering that the fate of the DC Extended Universe rests on this film's shoulders, let's hope that Zack Snyder delivers.

I loved the trailer, and I love what the movie is doing....

Especially with Batman, this is Batman from the comics.... he uses guns, especially if he's going into battle against a Monster or something that's not human

This trailer made the statement that DC Comics is finally coming to the big screen in full force, it's a new era

It looks like Snyder might be taking inspiration from "All American Boy" for Doomsday.... At least for this first incarnation, because I think he's going to evolve in the movie but that's what I'm getting from this first form were seeing....

It makes me wonder if Waller might get a name drop, it also makes me wonder if Doomsday's DNA exists, or if what this Doomsday is, is actually a combination of Zod's DNA/Body and Kryptonite

Good article.

I think the reactions to the Clark-Bruce interaction (including the Lex parts) are overblown. 1) It seems clear to me that Clark knows about Bruce Wayne, but he doesn't know how he looks. He asks, "Who is that?", and recognizes the name. Considering that he would have entered the Daily Planet as one step above an intern, it's likely that this is the first time in two years that he's getting to cover something as high-profile as this event.

The Lex scene here is problematic for only two reasons: 1) The voice is higher pitched, and not in a convincing way, and the ha's come across as forced. Other than that, there's not much wrong with it in my mind, especially if he's trying to come across in a certain way. I do get your distaste of the "mad scientist" route, but I'm not sure that it means that we won't see the classic business/political side. He clearly manipulates Senator Finch so that's an aspect. There's also the fact that by the end he may in fact get closer to the Lex that we are familiar with, in personality if not in appearance (though he WILL go bald).

Regarding Batman's behavior, I think part of the intent of the film is to show a Batman that has become harsher and crueler due to the events of Man of Steel. I expect him to change behavior by the end.

Yeah, I'm the most disappointed about Doomsday. I'm not sure why they felt the need to introduce him now. If they wanted to tie it into Zod, why not use a better version of Bizarro? Doomsday may not be a three-dimensional bad guy (he doesn't need to be), but I felt he could have worked better in a Man of Steel sequel, as a sort of Balrog to Superman's Gandalf (if you get the reference). In fact, I think a Man of Steel sequel would have been perfect with Brainiac as the main villain and Doomsday as the last villain (a la The Dark Knight's Joker and Two-Face, respectively).

That's what I'm thinking too, I can't wait to see Doomsday in action!

And, I'm positive that there are still lots of surprises ahead

I really, really don't need anymore trailers now, haha, I hope the future trailers are just snippets of the previous 2 trailers

Yeah, when you watch the trailer, when Clark says "Who's that?", Bruce is still in his car pulling up to the party, with a crowd of people around him.... It's a perfectly normal question, I think he definitely knows who Bruce Wayne is, but this is the first time their meeting in person

Plus, Kal-El is playing the role of Kent, and Kent is a journalist, so it makes even more sense how he introduced himself to Wayne at the party

@ManCalledSting

Nice, thanks, I'll actually check that out tonight on Netflix

And, I agree about Batman, definitely. Bruce Wayne is the the real disguise.... There's actually 3 for Batman, imo.... Batman, Bruce Wayne's public persona, and then Bruce Wayne as Alfred knows him.

But, that question for Superman is a lot harder, haha, that's not how I feel about it. Especially as his stories progress. I think that might be more true when he's younger in the comics. If he's working at the Planet though, Clark Kent is definitely a disguise in more ways than one....

Technically there could be 3 for Superman too, haha, I love thinking about that stuff though

I'm not too keen on the overly mad scientist aspects (I think Lex should be a scientific genius, just not fulfilling the mad scientist stereotype).

I think Doomsday should have been introduced as an older, alien-created creature in a Superman sequel, and -- preferably -- in connection with Brainiac. I love the concept of Doomsday as an ancient creature that has endured cycles of death and has evolved to the point of being so much stronger than even Superman. I also like the fact that he has an inbred hatred of Kryptonians. I don't have much of a problem with a Kryptonian genetic basis, but just with the idea that he's human-made. I also take issue with the fact that he doesn't go up against Superman alone, and that he doesn't "kill" Superman.

The Brainiac connection would have been promising because of Brainiac's connection to Krypton and because of the concept behind his theft of cities. Brainiac definitely could work within Man of Steel's imagining of Krypton's history, and could have tied into Doomsday through the motivations for Brainiac's actions. In particular, some of the themes that could have been drawn upon include an Omzymandias/Ramses-like obsession with the greatness of one's civilizational works and the inevitability of civilizational/cultural decline, two related themes that could have been expressed by Brainiac, feared by Superman, and embodied by Doomsday. This is the reason why I hope Brainiac isn't the villain for Justice League.

So I just think using Doomsday now means that he can't be used later, which would mean a huge missed opportunity that betrays a lack of foresight by WB/Snyder.

Kal-El/Superman, Kent at the Bugle, and then Kent from Smallville w/ Ma and Pa Kent

I can't think about that stuff too much though, because I feel like for Superman it's more of a simple concept than it is for Batman, for Batman it gets a lot darker....

Haha, if I talk about Superman's secret identity too much I feel like he has multiple personalities

It's probably a stretch, but Lex could find "Doomsday's DNA" and that could be the key to creating "Doomsday" or mixing his DNA w/ Kryptonite.

But, after MOS, and Zod, I think it makes sense how they tied Zod to Doomsday, in a sense this is Round 2, and Superman has help.

If they did decided to use Doomsday in a straight sequel, with just Superman and Doomsday going at it, it still would have felt like Round 2, and with just Superman and Doomsday, it would have felt very similar to the Zod fight, because of how angry Zod was at Superman

Anyway, I get what your saying, but in regards to the DCEU and the story their telling, I really like what their doing and how their connecting everything together

I understand that, definitely, but there are some things that go against that, especially in the comics, like how Kent has to lie to Lois all the time, etc

I think what your saying actually works a lot better for the movie version though, right on, but it can be interpreted so many ways, that's what's fun about it to me

Lmao, so your logic is to judge an entire movie, that will be over 2 hours long, on a 3 minute trailer that was made for the GA....

And, yeah, haha, the DC/Marvel argument about the liberties each studio has taken is hilarious, haha. I won't start anything either, but I totally know what your saying.... Plus, Lex and Doomsday pairing makea sense, it's been done in the comics too
