While we know Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will play Simon Williams in Marvel Studios' Wonder Man, very little about the series has been revealed beyond that.
The cast has started taking shape in recent months, of course, with Sir Ben Kingsley set to reprise his Iron Man 3 role as Trevor Slattery. In April, Demetrius Grosse was confirmed as The Grim Reaper, while we anticipate seeing Westworld alum Ed Harris make an appearance too. Courtney Cox, Bob Odenkirk, and Josh Gad are among those also rumoured to star.
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter, we have a brief synopsis for Wonder Man that offers a slightly better idea of where the show will take us.
According to the trade, the series "gives a superhero's perspective on the entertainment industry, centering on a Hollywood stuntman and actor trying to make it big in the movies."
It's an intriguing premise, and we're guessing the fact Simon gets superpowers will give his career a boost. Still, it's hard not to wonder how this journey eventually leads to the aspiring actor joining the ranks of Earth's Mightiest Heroes as an Avenger.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Avengers: The Kang Dynasty director Destin Daniel Cretton is overseeing the series, while Andrew Guest has been tapped as Wonder Man's Head Writer. His past credits include hit TV shows like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, 30 Rock, and Community. Cretton will also executive produce the series and is expected to direct a few episodes.
Wonder Man made his Marvel Comics debut in the pages of Avengers #9 in 1964. Initially a villain, he was later retconned and became a hero (and an Avenger) in the 1970s. His brother is the Grim Reaper, while it was his brainwaves that were used by Ultron as a basis for The Vision; later, he would join the West Coast Avengers and become a Hollywood star.
Production on Wonder Man began earlier this year, but between the ongoing WGA strikes and Marvel Studios' hopes to get back to quality over quantity, it wouldn't be surprising if the series doesn't premiere on Disney+ until 2025.
