The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Marwan Kenzari (Aladdin; The Old Guard; The Mummy) has joined the cast of Warner Bros. and New Line's Black Adam, which will star Dwayne Johnson (Hobbs & Shaw; Jungle Cruise; Red Notice) in the title role as the DC Comics antihero.
While details on his mystery role are currently being kept under wraps, The Illuminerdi previously reported in October that the studios were interested in Kenzari to play the villain of the picture, who is believed to be Ishmael Gregor, a.k.a. Sabbac.
Also, after multiple delays due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, it finally looks like principal photography will begin in April in Atlanta, so expect to get a whole lot more casting news in the coming weeks.
Jaume Collet-Serra (Jungle Cruise; Non-Stop; The Commuter) is directing with a screenplay from Adam Sztykiel (Rampage; Due Date; Scoob!), Rory Haines (Informer; The Mauritanian), and Sohrab Noshirvani (Informer; The Mauritanian).
In addition to Johnson as the headliner, the cast will also feature Noah Centineo (Charlie's Angels; Masters of the Universe; To All the Boys I've Loved Before) as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge (Straight Outta Compton; The Invisible Man; Jack Reacher: Never Go Back) as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell (Euphoria; Trinkets; In Treatment) as Cyclone, and Sarah Shahi (Alias; Old School; Bullet to the Head) as an unnamed university professor, rumored to be an alias for Isis.
The film is also expected to feature Doctor Fate and Nabu, but they have yet-to-be cast.
Black Adam was previously slated to release in December 2021, but it was removed from the calendar and will now presumably debut in 2022 or 2023.
