MGM and Warner Bros.' movie adaptation of the popular video game series
Tomb Raider is set to open in theaters this weekend, but there's a chance it might not even dethrone the King of Wakanda.
According to Deadline's projections,
Tomb Raider, which stars Oscar winner Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft, is estimated to pull in $23-$25 million domestically. Disney/Marvel's
Black Panther - which has sat atop the domestic box office for four straight weekends - is
"looking at its fifth straight No. 1 frame with a take around $27 million," the site projects.
Surely, the Warner Bros. is hoping for a better box office turnout than the one currently projected, but it'll have to come by either fan loyalty or word of mouth as
initial reviews for Tomb Raider are a mixed bag. While not overwhelmingly negative, reviewers have certainly found plenty of faults with the movie.
As for
Black Panther, well, Disney probably couldn't be more thrilled with its performance as it is just the fifth Marvel Studios film to crack the $1 billion mark worldwide. Should these projections hold true for the weekend,
Black Panther will cross the $600 million mark at the domestic box office. The Ryan Coogler-directed film, which has
already surpassed The Dark Knight, has a legitimate chance of overtaking
Marvel's The Avengers as the highest grossing superhero movie of all time at the domestic box office.
Do you plan on seeing
Tomb Raider in theaters this weekend, or would you rather sit through another viewing of
Black Panther for the second, third, or possibly fourth time?
