BLACK WIDOW Writer On How The Movie Deals With CIVIL WAR Fallout & Why She's Not Worried About Trolls

Black Widow director Jac Schaeffer has revealed a few more details about how the movie ties into Captain America: Civil War, and why she's not worried about trolls attacking the female-led release.

Black Widow will be Marvel Studios' first Phase 4 movie, and while it's set to take place in the past, we can expect it to fill in some major gaps in the Marvel Cinematic Universe's long-running history.

Now, writer Jac Schaeffer has shed some light on what fans can expect while confirming that the movie will indeed deal with the fallout from Captain America: Civil War.

The last time we saw Natasha, she had been forced to go on the run after helping Steve Rogers escape, and this movie will find her "very much on her own" after the events of that movie. As for her solo outing, that will see the hero forced to "reckon with some of the red in her ledger."

Schaeffer was also asked about the possibility that the female-led Black Widow will be trolled the same way Captain Marvel was earlier this year, but she isn't letting that bother her. "When people react with hate, it saddens me. I think it’s a shame," the writer explains. "But that’s not where I want to put my energy. I’m not interested in the loud, sour-grapes voices."

With the film set after the events of Captain America: Civil War, Johansson promises we’ll see a different Natasha than the one in past MCU films. “When something huge explodes and all the pieces are landing, you have that moment of stillness where you don’t know what to do next — that’s the moment that she’s in. In that moment, you actually have to face yourself.”

Harbour’s character is also known as the Red Guardian, Russia’s answer to Captain America. “In a way, he’s a super-soldier, but he’s also a very complicated guy. He has a lot of flaws, a lot of idiosyncrasies. It’s a very rich character” Harbour told EW.

Comic-Con attendees were treated to a fight scene between Black Widow and Pugh’s character Yelena Belova, described as a sister figure to the superspy.

It hasn't been released online but those attending Comic-Con were treated to a fight scene between Black Widow and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova. However, it sounds like these two have a sister-like relationship and will actually be allies in the movie.

Fagbenle describes his character Mason as “a fixer,” who comes from Natasha’s past and is “kind of into her.” “It’s a bit of a complex relationship with Natasha because obviously, ostensibly we have this kind of business transaction, but I think there’s a little romantic frisson,” Fagbenle told EW.

"It’s a bit of a complex relationship with Natasha because obviously, ostensibly we have this kind of business transaction, but I think there’s a little romantic frisson." The question is, could he be playing Taskmaster? That would certainly be a pretty interesting twist.

Weisz described her character Malena to EW as “quite a seasoned spy and assassin,” who has “been cycled through the Black Widow Red Room [program] five times at this point in her life.” She also plays a key part in a top-secret experiment within the film.

Rachel Weisz's is reportedly playing Malena in the movie, "a seasoned spy and assassin," who has "been cycled through the Black Widow Red Room [program] five times at this point in her life." She also plays a key role in some sort of experiement in the film.

O. T. Fagbenle, Florence Pugh, Scarlett Johansson, Rachel Weisz, and David Harbour took a break from shooting to give audiences more details about the long-awaited solo film for the original Avengers member.
After the Marvel Comic-Con 2019 panel, the Black Widow stars provided EW with some exclusive scoops about what we can expect from the prequel movie, due out May 1, 2020.

@Spagett - Agreed, doesn't insult people, they just need to let the movie speak for itself and dont get defensive when it is criticized, seriously we don't want a Ghost Busters situation on our hands

@DarkDetective - Really with that it wasn't anywere near as bad, with that it was just Brie Larson, with Ghost Busters it was the whole cast and the director

@dracula - well, its my least favourite MCU movie. I really just ignored brie larson’s stupid comments, but damn, the movie was so bad and i was so hyped about it.

@MotherGooseUPus - Hopefully this will finally shut people up about sexism being the reason Captain Marvel was criticized, seriously, people are looking forward to this and loved Wonder Woman and plenty of other great female led movies and shows

@MotherGooseUPus - same here, hell lots of my favorite characters are female, some people are just idiot, but seriously I think some people have blown the amount of sexism out of proportion

@MotherGooseUPus - again, the hate its not that she is a woman. Personally , for me, its because its a terrible woman. I actually was super excited by the trailers, didnt know why a lot of people didnt like them. Until i watch the movie i simply hated it. The plot was stupid, the plot twist was dumb and they ruined the skrulls and the reason fury lost his eye the most retarded thing ive ever seen. I didnt even cared for carol being called out for being a woman in the air force because i can imagine that happening in that period of time (not nowadays tho). And brie larson is the most bland and emotionless mcu character, let alone protagonist, ive witnessed in all its history.
DarkDetective
DarkDetective - 8/2/2019, 9:35 AM
@DarkDetective - i meant to say terrible movie. Lol, but brie larson does seem like a terrible person, and not because she is a woman.

Whoomp, there it is

dracula

@OmegaDaGrodd - People like Black Widow, so as long as they advertise it better and it's good, im sure the drama wont be as bad. Captain Marvel wasn't terrible but it is in the bottom 5 of the infinity saga. Seriously people need to stop pointing towards sexism when movies like Ghost Busters and Captain Marvel are criticized. Wonder Woman was successful with both critics and audiences, there have been many sucessful female led franchises in the past. People bitch whenever any movie is rebooted, GB2016 was not singled out, good reboots just prove the criticism wrong. There are plenty of sucessful female led shows and movies that are accepted

@dracula - "Wonder Woman was successful with both critics and audiences"

...as was Captain Marvel.
dracula
dracula - 8/2/2019, 4:13 AM
@Spock0Clock - Well with Wonder Woman I found most people liked it, a few bad reviews but not many online. Captain Marvel, I found a lot of mixed reviews on it, i saw reviews from men who loved it, women who hated it, and some that said it was average. Not trying to say Captain Marvel is crap, it's no fant4stic or Batman and Robin.I just think people are too quick to point to sexism, especially when we have had plenty of female heroes like Sarah Connor, Ripley, Buffy, The Bride and plenty others.

"Captain Marvel wasn't terrible but it is in the bottom 5 of the infinity saga. Seriously people need to stop pointing towards sexism when movies like Ghost Busters and Captain Marvel are criticized"

There are not hundreds if not thousands of hours of videos on Youtube full of faux-outraged dudes (and the occasional self loathing opportunistic women) screaming about every single frame of Captain Marvel simply because it is a 'not terrible movie that makes up the lower half of Marvel's best phase'. The primary reason Captain Marvel has controversy surrounding it is because of deeply held sexism. The movie had nothing prerelease to otherwise generate so much performative anger, review bombing, and scrutiny of how much an action movie's protagonist didn't smile in promotional material (where she actually smiled multiple times).

There are countless legitimately awful movies starring men that are released every year. NONE of them generate even a fraction of the hate online that Captain Marvel did PRIOR to anyone seeing it determining how bad/offensive/terrible they felt it actually was.

This is not some rubix cube to figure out, we know what it is as we've seen it several times before

@OmegaDaGrodd - The "no smiling" thing had to be the most blatant display of sexism I've ever seen from online film trolls. Usually they try to justify what they're saying or hide it, but this was textbook sexism, seeing how women in real life are often told by sexist men to "smile for me".

I've never seen a Captain America trailer where he's smiling. Suddenly Captain Marvel has to smile though.
OmegaDaGrodd
OmegaDaGrodd - 8/2/2019, 4:51 AM
@DnA - Yeah the "Smile" thing was a unique form of "Telling on yourself" that people weren't even trying to be shy about. I think that's probably what was so strange about the CM pre-release stuff - people weren't making even the slightest effort to hide their shit. Brie really had these dues on one

@OmegaDaGrodd
@DnA

One of my favorite coincidences ever was that the film itself used that as an example of sexism.
dracula
dracula - 8/2/2019, 5:03 AM
@OmegaDaGrodd - I get what you are saying. Yes there is a lot of sexism, all I am is this....Just because of a movie is representing an under repesented group doesn't make it great, and it doesn't mean everyone who criticizes it is a racist or a sexist. There are always going to be haters, there is no escaping that, but not every film is going to please everyone. Both Wonder Woman and Black Panther had very little drama, and they didn't do much to acknowledge the haters, they were both very sucessful. I'm not trying to say there was no sexism or racism involved, im just saying we need to keep an open mind and accept that not every review or complaint has to do with race or sex.
The show Party Of Five is being rebooted with a mexican american cast, I enjoy the original show and I am mexican american so im going to check it out, there are trolls online calling it propaganda, but I also see that a lot of people who just dont want it to be rebooted, like I see with a lot of shows that are being rebooted. It's not racism on those peoples part, and you know what for the most part I just want a good show, sure im being represented, but if the show isn't good im not going to keep watching it. It's great to get representation, but the most important thing in tv and film is quality.
