With Blue Beetle making his first ever live-action theatrical debut in exactly one week, we thought it would be nice to look back at Jaime Reyes himself, Cobra Kai star Xolo Maridueña, first accepting the role and his response to such a life-changing turning point in his career.

In the video, we see Xolo meeting up with a couple of friends, including Blue Beetle Director, Angel Manuel Soto; unknown to Xolo that he is about to offer him the role of a lifetime.

As would be among any of us, receiving a role such as iconic as Blue Beetle would feel like a massive accomplishment, and Xolo does not refrain from showing his true heartfelt gratitude.

The actor cries moments later while on a phone call with his mother and Soto sitting next to him -- telling her the big news, as the video then concludes with this duo set to create DC's next big film.

Are you excited to see Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle?

Blue Beetle arrives in theaters on August 18th, 2023.

Jaime Reyes suddenly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology called the Scarab. When the Scarab chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he's bestowed with an incredible suit of armor that's capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the superhero Blue Beetle.

Blue Beetle is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle, produced by DC Studios and The Safran Company. The film was directed by Angel Manuel Soto and written by Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer. It is intended to be the fourteenth installment in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). The film stars Xolo Maridueña as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle alongside Adriana Barraza, Damián Alcázar, Raoul Max Trujillo, Susan Sarandon, and George Lopez.

Happy for Xolo. Happy for Latino representation (I am not Latino).

It's a shame the guy compared DC/Batman fans to crazed cultists with shrines. I'd heard some good things about him in Cobra Kai and was waiting for that to finish before marathoning it, but now I can't see him as anything other than very disrespectful of the fanbases he is part of.

Unsure what sort of mentality would make him actively feel it is wise to celebrate the idea that fans may be offended by something he's a part of.

That said, it's not his fault this movie is going to be a box office bomb. He's just a scapegoat the studios can blame when the film fails, because they'll claim him as 'not enough star power' and they'll use that to justify casting more well known Film actors in future rather than branching into TV actors.

The 'Latino representation' they are pushing in the marketing they can use to shield criticism, deflecting when the film performs poorly and it'll help Warner Bros hit diversity/inclusion targets to have a singular film they can focus around a group rather than have representation elsewhere.

"The studios don't ordinarily do any of this."

Controversy creates interactions, driving traffic, promoting and generating ad revenue and/or engagement to increase ticket sales - especially in the more modern times when marketing budgets are made cheaper via online social engagement tactics.

"is not like he was making shít up"

Just seems silly for those involved to insult your primary paying audience. After all, the most likely audience is fans of DC which is primarily known for Batman/Superman.

It'd make more sense to butter up that audience to lock in that level of support.

@Scarilian -

I don't think calling out those incels is "silly".
usually the 'paying audience' are grown ups.

I hope the movie is good, regardless of what the outcome is, flop or not.

if it's a good movie, chances are the character (Blue Beetle) will remain in the current reboot of the new DC.

I'm gonna try to see it on opening weekend if not, for sure the following weekend, you know... work stuff.

The idea of incels and nerd culture, especially comic book fans, are heavily interlinked. Your primary target audience for a DC or Marvel film is the obsessed shut-in incel with plenty of cash because they don't go anywhere or do anything.

Now they are attacking that group. It's moronic of them.

Wonder how much they will touch on the Blue Beetle legacy

Dont expect everything, but Jaime’s original run was very tied into Blue Beetle lore. Him learning from those who knew Dan and Ted.

Learning about the Scarab from Dan’s grandaughter

Learning strategy from from a book used by Ted, given to him by Guy Garner , which helps him defeat the Reach

Figuring out the “magic” word Dan used to activate the scarabs power is actually the scarab’s name

If it gets a sequel, could bring in Peacemaker

I am Latino, and speak Spanish at home, i will NOT be watching this. As others have said, it's a tertiary character, that no one knows, it's a bland, origin story told 1000 times, and looks like a WB cross with power ranger's episode with Latino actors. So looks like we got screwed again? I will not waste my time, seeing crap, just because they have Latino actors. I and my kids saw cobra Kai on netflix and yes in Spanish and we loved Xolo, but not enough to see a movie made for HBO. i hope it's good and succeeds, but from what is see, it won't, and the weekend won even make 15 million, sorry.

@cubichy - Why do you hope it succeeds if you think it looks bland and don't want to waste your time watching it?

That makes no sense.

If you want it to succeed, go support it. And if not, that's okay too. But make up your mind.

@Spawnnn - no hate, just not accepting dogshit because they choose latino actors. Wb can't make a good trinity or JL movie and they choose to spend time on a wanna be iron ms, that no one knows. Crap. No hate, just the truth.

cubichy - 8/12/2023, 4:12 PM
@SheepishOne - it makes perfect sense, to me its dogshit, but maybe not to others and since it's a latino actors, I hope 😉 it succeeds, but I cannot support it. I actually have comics and know canon, so I cannot support something that looks so bad, it almost feels like a Mexican wrestling 😅 movie, the movie is subpar, since it was always ment for hbo. Now they wanna sell it as official, that's crap.i won't support it, but still hope it succeeds, but it won't, cause no one knows or cares about blue bottle and it looks awful, plus the story has been regurgitated so Manu times.

Hate for his film to flop, seems like a good dude. Friends that have interviewed him say that he is a sweet person.

The only thing interesting about this movie to me is Xolo. Love the dude in Cobra Kai.

Everything else seems like a generic hybrid of Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Venom. That said, Xolo has enough charm to elevate it, if the story isn't half bad. I guess we'll see.

A low budget origin movie is probably the safest bet DC could get right now, especially when the film seems to have no connections to the Snyderverse (apart fromhaving an established Batman), so if this flops too then ohmama, they are in trouble.

If Aquaman flops too, that is as clear a message as you can get. If Joker flops, it's time to start crying.

But if Superman Legacy flops, it is over. Oh. Ver.

James Gunn fills theaters with what was at best a marvel C team before he made that first movie. If him doing a Superman movie flops then reality has shifted
