Blue Beetle is largely standalone in nature, with a handful of vague references to the wider DC Universe (whether that's the DCEU or DCU is up for debate). However, while it's been confirmed that Jaime Reyes will eventually join James Gunn's DCU, we don't currently know whether the hero will appear in a sequel or elsewhere.
A mid-credits scene sets the stage for the character's on-screen future by revealing that former Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, is still alive and well and in desperate need of help.
With a Booster Gold TV series in the works for Max, it would make sense to pair that time-traveller up with either version of Blue Beetle. Ted ultimately seems far more likely, though, and it wouldn't be overly surprising for DC Studios to ignore the events of this movie when the DCEU becomes the DCU.
Talking to ComicBook.com, filmmaker Angel Manuel Soto broke down the mid-credits scene and why it was ultimately most important to this story.
"Ted Kord is alive. The whole movie, Ted Kord is in it without being in it," he explains. "We have Jenny Kord who has this conflict with her sentiment about her father because he disappeared."
"We wanted to give some closure to her character. Obviously, that closure was a lot of doors to open and that closure comes with the fact that Ted Kord did not die, he disappeared," Soto adds. "While we don't know where he's at or why he sent that message, we know that he's going to be somewhere in the future whether it's by himself or with Booster Gold. Everything is open."
In a separate conversation with Entertainment Weekly, the filmmaker shared his thoughts on Gunn's potential plans for Blue Beetle in Booster Gold.
"We all love Ted Kord and Booster Gold, and knowing that James Gunn also has plans for Booster Gold, it felt like the right thing for us to continue with. Ted Kord is still alive, he's somewhere out there in the universe, and whatever the future holds for our hero is open to interpretation."
"So, whether that is Booster Gold or Ted Kord or if it is both of them [together], the possibility exists and it is something that we want to entertain."
We'd guess the director hasn't been made privy to DC Studios' wider plans and Blue Beetle's disappointing box office performance makes it seem unlikely Soto will be back to helm a sequel. Jaime could take on a supporting role elsewhere, of course, though that may or may not end up being Booster Gold.
