Yesterday, Warner Bros. released the first trailer for Blue Beetle and, well, you can tell it was once being made for HBO Max. It's unclear why this movie survived when Batgirl didn't, but it still looks like it could be a fun ride.
There was even a moment in the teaser that showed off the Blue Beetle costumes worn by Dan Garret and Ted Kord. It's a scene which suggests the hero is one with a history in the DCEU, and that's exciting on a number of levels. While Ted isn't expected to appear here, it would be crazy not to explore his relationship with Jaime Reyes down the line.
Another dynamic fans would like to see on screen is Ted and Booster Gold because even though the latter has teamed up with Jaime Reyes, the teenager's predecessor is, in fact, his true bestie.
Of course, none of this matters if Blue Beetle is going to be a standalone movie that's forgotten once the DCEU becomes the DCU.
However, a new report from Deadline reveals that even though this movie was developed under Walter Hamada's watch, "Word is the character will be incorporated in the universe being developed by new DC bosses Peter Safran and James Gunn."
Batman gets a mention in the trailer, but assuming there are no direct references to the DCEU elsewhere in Blue Beetle, the character could indeed become part of the DCU.
Unfortunately, that will only serve to further muddy the waters and confuse causal moviegoers, especially when actors and characters from The Suicide Squad are sticking around despite us getting a new Batman and Superman! Making things even more complicated is the fact Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which arrives after Blue Beetle, is presumably the last time Jason Momoa will play that character before becoming the DCU's Lobo!
We'll see what happens, but The Flash could clear things up this June. As for Blue Beetle, that arrives in theaters on August 18, later this year.
